The Father is one with an INFINITE family union of beings like Himself that are the One unchanging God of the infinite, eternal universe.

Richard
Sorry Richard,

But you just contradicted yourself. If your god is constantly being added to (more beings added to the union) and increasing in glory then he cannot be infinite and unchanging.

Nothing can be added to infinity.

Paul

This is one of the most foolish discussions I’ve ever encountered (how can it not be, if people are discussing mormonism? 😛 ). I think it’s high time this thread was closed.

Does the Bible really teach what you are saying?

In the Mormon faith, which does not consider the Creeds, The Father has a Spirit Body of great glory, and a physical, resurrected body as a tabernacle for His spirit. Christ, by His resurrection, like any “Son” has now become like His Father.

The Father is one with an INFINITE family union of beings like Himself that are the One unchanging God of the infinite, eternal universe.

This** One Infinite God** has always existed, has power over all powers in the universe, has all knowledge, truth, intelligence, etc. Only those who become one with Christ and his disciples, as taught in John 17, will obtain to this glory as Joint-heirs with Christ.

Richard
Oh my.This is surely an attempt at twisting doctrine from “God was once a man and lived on an earth just like us”, into “God was always God”. If that’s really what you want to believe (that God always was God) then I don’t think you can truly and fully embrace Mormonism. It doesn’t mesh with the eternal progression stuff very well. How can God progress (and why in the world would he need to) if He was always God? Think about it?

I’ll tell you whats…silly, lol. People wanting to be gods. Hmmmm i remember reading one Angel tried that… it was in the bible, lol.

No offense anyone.

Sorry Richard,

Not according to college math courses I took.

Look here:

earlham.edu/~peters/writing/infapp.htm

Theorem 7 shows that infinity plus one again equals infinity.
… If your god is constantly being added to (more beings added to the union) and increasing in glory then he cannot be infinite and unchanging.
Since creation has ALWAYS been going on according to the same divine pattern-- worlds without beginning or end-- then one UNCHANGING aspect of this creation is the salvation and exaltation of men and women according to the Gospel plan.

UNCHANGING is not just a description of static things, but also of active things that continue to act in the same way.

Richard

OK, that is a valid consideration. No doubt the Holy Ghost has inspired many, many men through the ages.
I’m not necessarily suggesting that the Greek philosopher converts to the Church received divine revelation. All I’m saying is that there is the possibility that God meant for Greek philosophy to influence the early Church in order that the Church may more fully understand the revelation that had already been given. This would be the opposite of what LDS authorities say when they claim that Greek philosophy corrupted the early church. God can and does use whatever means he deems necessary.
I certainly believe that we need more than what is in the Bible to correctly understand God. And in fact, Jesus is recorded as promising such:I have yet MANY THINGS to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you INTO ALL TRUTH, for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. --John 16:12-13
So here, Jesus the evening before his final day as a mortal, promises that the Holy Ghost will eventually bring “All Truth” to his disciples.
I agree in general but not in particular, because the passage you quote refers to a singular event in church history–Pentecost. In Acts Chapter 2 we find the fulfillment of this promiss regarding the coming of the Holy Spirit when the Apostles received all truth. It was at Pentecost when the Apostles were filled with the Holy Spirit and transformed from scared disciples into bold evangelists. Christ was not foretelling some far away future event, if you were implying that this passage somehow referred to Joseph Smith’s ministry. It most certainly did not.
So, whatever other things the Lord inspires men to understand and write, can we not also hope for a time when the Word of the Lord is again given to the true people of Christ until they have “all truth”?
No. To think so assumes that the truth was somehow lost after it was given the first time at Pentecost. This truth was given once and for all to the Apostles, and they passed it on to their successors, the bishops. The Catholic Church has guarded this Deposit of Faith throughout the centuries–it has never been lost. Those who think it was–which includes Mormons, JW’s, Seventh Day Adventists, and most Protestants for that matter, have all been swept away by the apostacy conspiracy theory–and that’s just what it is–a conspiracy theory. The study of early church history bears this out, but many choose to remain ignorant on the matter.

I am UNCHANGED in my opinion about mormonism. The foundation of it all is rotten. Everything built on it is nothing but lies.

I must be a goddess.

Hi Rebecca,

I noticed that you live in Salt Lake City. As an excommunicated Mormon I am sure I would agree with you on many problems that exist amoung the present day LDS people.

When I was on an LDS mission to Italy years ago, I heard Elders say that if the church was not true, the Elders would have destroyed it years ago. But I also noticed that the Catholics said about the same thing: if the Catholic church was not true, the Priests would have destroyed IT long ago.

We can only hope that Christ will see through all our human weaknesses, and eventually bring all his sheep into one fold as he promised.

With all respect Richard, you come across as a mormon who has gone fundie. Are you starting your own religion or what?

I left mormonism many years ago.

I don’t just disagree with a few points. I disagree with all of it. As BH Roberts said, the authenticity of the restoration stands or falls on Joseph Smith’s claims. I believe nothing of what Smith claimed, least of all that he was a prophet of God.

God does indeed call us to Him. I hope to be received into the Roman Catholic church this coming Easter.

Peace.

Rebecca

Would you please explain how that is not polytheism?

Thank you,

Ryan 🙂
I think Mormons practice more “henotheism” or “monolatry”. Which is the belief in many gods, while worshipping and obeying one of them. But Polytheism works in my book too, lol. 🙂

So God has wings?? He will overshadow thee with his shoulders: and under his** WINGS** thou shalt trust. He must be fire too
“Because the Lord thy God is a consuming fire, a jealous God,” (Deu 4:24). Read John 4:24. Numbers 23:19, Hosea 11:9.
I came to this website because I was trying to understand the catholic views on the Trinity. This link started on a talk by elder holland. Asked a few questions at the time and have been reading every since. Someone had included Jesus into the make up of the Father including him in the statement that I made about the Father and of course it isn’t true of Jesus Christ in the Catholic Church. I should have linked into a previous quote but was lazy and attached to you.

In the Catholic faith God does not have wings those are figures of speech, he has no body, he is a spirit. “Jealous God”, Jealousy, hate, or love are all human traits and are not possed by God (Irenaeus AD189).

I was hoping that someone could confrim my understanding so that in no way am I mistaken in my understanding of Catholic teaching.

You would be correct then. The Catholic Church teaches that God does not have flesh, but is true spirit. But i don’t really understand what you were trying to say earlier sorry bout that.

Congratulations and welcome home 😃 . How many years were you in the LDS church for?

I think perhaps we should clarify this for our Mormon friends. God the Father does not have a body of flesh. Neither does the Holy Spirit. They are pure spirit. But Jesus (God the Son) has taken upon Himself human flesh and so is true God and true man. He is risen from the dead, being the first fruits of the resurrection, and still retains his glorified resurrected physical body. This is the only body the Godhead possesses.
For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. (Col 2:9)
God bless,
Paul
