Curtis Stephan’s new cd Sacred Revolution alternating with his Christmas cd Born to Us that was released last year

He is a very talented Catholic artist (and a friend) who writes and arranges everything from traditional mass parts to Christian rock and jazz. I’m very excited for him because he was just signed by Sound & Spirit to begin national promotion. My parish is blessed to have him as our music director! I think it is great to find a very talented person who uses their gifts to serve God first.

Hard to Handle by the Black Crows on the local classic rock station.

Claude Bolling and Jean Pierre Rampal - “Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano”

at my stage in life I have learned to cherish silence, so I cultivate it when I can, including silence from constant background music, pointless conversations, and I am working on reducing internet conversations (yup, another forum addict at work). I play instrumental hymn CDs (I like bluegrass style and ancient instruments) during LOTH but practice lectio divina in a silent room, usually in the middle of the night. I play Taize in the car and sing along, but not on long trips because that easily drifts into meditation and contemplative prayer, which is not good on the freeway. I play chant sometimes especially according to the Church seasons. I am using an Advent chant CD right now.

while on the computer I usually play Taize or Chant, when sitting and reading a book I play classical, usually symphonic. Favorites are CD re-releases of George Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra, particularly Beethoven. However, when listening to a symphony I prefer to do it in a darkened room, with nothing else going on, so I can really listen.

for long drives I play broadway musicals, or classic rock to help me stay away, especially “road music” like Bob Seegar. For driving around town if I have no CD I listen to NPR if they are playing classical or jazz (which is only a few hours a day) or the Christian station. Everything else is either country or Spanish-language.

I think I get this from my family, my brother is this way, if something really strikes me emotionally I try to find music to express what I am feeling. when watching TV the morning of 9/11 I knelt and prayed the sorrowful mysteries of the rosary, then played Faure’s requiem. After watching a recent documentary on the Holocaust I played dies irae and kol nidre. On July 4 I played Beethoven’s 9th symphony.

Ooooohh, one of my favorite bands!

In addition to the previously mentioned Rush DVD I have also been listening to a lot of Al DiMeola’s albums from the 70’s and 80’s. His skills on guitar are virtually unparalleled.

Alejandro Sanz, “Y solo se me ocurre amarte” Grandes Éxitos 1991-2004

It is a song he wrote after his daughter was born. This is the acoustic version he performed for MTV Unplugged. It is soooo beautiful.

All the talk from people saying others shouldnt listen to Shakira has made wanna listen to some Shakira! 😃

So I got her and caught this Canadian fellow on PBS the other night…Michael Buble’…he was pretty good. Groovin’ to both of these folks. 🙂

Metal!!! Yeah I’m a metal head and I LOVE Christian metal to be more specific. Right now I’m listening to my favorite band THE SHOWDOWN’s “From the Mouth of Gath Comes Terror” its a song which tells the story of david and Goliath. Almost all there songs tell a different Old Testament Story. Good Stuff.

If You Don’t Eat Your Meat, You Can’t Have Any Pudding!

How Can You Have Any Pudding If You Don’t Eat Your Meat??!!

Iron & Wine’s Trapeze Swinger. Sam Beam is my favorite secular musician and I could listen to him all night. Neo-Folk is the only way to go. 😉

Graham Nash - Songs for Beginners. “In an upstairs gloomy back room, by the side of a northern sea, the army had my father, while my mother was having me…”
