just curious to know what relationship in your view that essence of christianity has to catholicism – since you’re an anglican i take it they are not exactly identical?
Just for the record, Anglican and Episcopalian are NOT the same thing anymore. If you would call an “Anglican” in the U.S. an “episcopalian”, you would probably upset him a little. Read: the liberal American Episcopal Church.

sorry – no offense meant.

My daughter’s best friend is an Egyptian Coptic Christian. Her family had to leave Egypt because they could not find work (father an engineer, mother a doctor) and because they would not convert to Islam. My guess is their lives were not entirely pleasant prior to leaving Egypt…
coptic christians have it pretty bad. they’re not the most persecuted religious minority in the world, apparently, but they have to live under strictures that most of us would find intolerable. i believe egypt’s constitution forbids them from serving as officers in the military or holding high government office.

i wish there were something we could do to pressue the world community to help them.

And if you were to tell me (an Episcopalian) that I am not an Anglican, you would upset me more than a little.

All Episcopalians are Anglicans, but all Anglicans (even in the U.S. these days) are not Episcopalians.

Of course you can argue that we aren’t “real” Anglicans. . . .

No. In most cases, the so-called “extremists” are the ones who are practicing Islam as it was taught in the Quran and Hadiths.
As you interpret them. Why you think you are the infallible interpreter of Islamic sacred texts is and always has been and always will be beyond me. . . . .

Edwin

I wouldn’t say that they “aren’t really Muslims”, but again I’m talking about the ideology itself and not the people. IMO what an ideology contains is not restricted by whatever a self-proclaimed adherent to that ideology claims it to be. In that case, different terms for different religions would be useless anyway as everything in the would just boil down to personal interpretation.
I don’t know what that last sentence means. Truth is not a matter of personal interpretation. Definition of the boundaries of religious traditions is and necessarily always will be subject to interpretation, because religious traditions, as I repeat, do not have “essences” but are convenient generalizations for what many people have believed and practiced over time.

The terms are useful because they describe with some accuracy the beliefs and practices of large numbers of people. But they must always be used with caution.

Edwin, where do you come down on the issue of authority? Your argument about Islam basically being whatever each individual Muslims thinks it is convinced me that there really isn’t any way to determine for sure whether Islam is peaceful or not because they lack a final earthly authority to tell us for sure.

The issue of authority is a big stumbling block in protestantism as well. Just curious how you deal with that in your own faith when you seem to be acutely aware of the problems it causes when trying to discern the true (there’s that word again) nature of Islam.

This question is not meant to be offensive, I’m just curious.

If anyone wonders why Muslims keep attacking Christians and other unbelievers, here is the proof, a sermon preached in their mosques and based on the teachings of the Quran.

Here’s just one example:

The Kaafir plots against the Muslims by night and betrays them in the day. Enmity towards you is vividly shown in his face and his utterances. He bites his fingertips in severe anger against the Muslims and his inner-self is full of evil plans against them. He pretends to be trustworthy and good mannered while he is actually pursuing his own interests. Allaah exposes them when he says:*** “Hatred has already appeared from their mouths but what their breasts conceal is far worse.” ***(Aal-Imran: 118).

Say (O Muslims): We believe in Allah and that which is revealed unto us and that which was revealed unto Abraham, and Ishmael, and Isaac, and Jacob, and the tribes, and that which Moses and Jesus received, and that which the prophets received from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and unto Him we have surrendered. (Quran Chapter 2-Al-Baqara Verse# 136)

“*There is no compulsion in religion. The right direction is henceforth distinct from error. And he who rejecteth false deities and believeth in Allah hath grasped a firm handhold which will never break. Allah is Hearer, Knower.” *(Quran Chapter 2-Al-Baqara Verse# 256)

Fight in the way of Allah against those who fight against you, but begin not hostilities. Lo! Allah loveth not aggressors”. (Quran Chapter 2-Al-Baqara Verse#190)

My previous three posts are from the holy Quran also i copied them from the site below:

Those who come to look for negatives will find what they think are negatives only, because they are thinking from inside thier boxes, all they could see are the walls of the box, they see half the truth, they take one word out of a 114 chapter book and tell you the book is no good,
However, those who look for the truth will not rest untill they find it
You can be christians , we can be muslims
but we dont have to fight or insult each other

because allah loves no agressors

(Just remember that if you get into politics, you will be thrown off track and you will not reach the truth )

[9.5] So when the sacred months have passed away, then slay the idolaters wherever you find them, and take them captives and besiege them and lie in wait for them in every ambush, then if they repent and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate, leave their way free to them; surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

The problem with selecting your evidence is you choose to not explain that later on in his career, Muhammed would change the direction of Islam - hence you were able to ‘compel’ pagans to cease being pagans. “Slay the idolators wherever you find them”

Non-disclosure does not help your credibility!😊

"Question: Does not brotherhood extend to all of mankind because it is established that Aadam was the forefather of everyone?
Response: This is not so. There is no doubt that everyone is from the offspring of Aadam but we do not say, “This is my brother,” when referring to a disbeliever meaning by that within the brotherhood of man. We can only refer to him as brother when there is a relationship by descent or lineage.

We Need To coexist
I agree we need to co-exist. Denying the evils done by your prophet won’t help.

Your site has an interesting spin on history. It says…
"When the Caliph `Umar b. al-Khattâb entered Jerusalem to receive the keys to the city, he was invited to pray inside the church, but he declined. He refused to do so, though he was in a position of strength and could do as he pleased. He refused, though he did not in any way disdain praying in the church. He said, showing great foresight and sensitivity: “I fear that if I pray inside, the Muslims of future times will wish to pray خn the same spot and will cause discomfort for the church’s congregation.”

`Umar, instead, prayed outside the church and spoke a guarantee to the Christians for their lives and security."

He needed those Christians, because they’d actually assisted him in defeating the forces of the Roman Empire. As in Egypt they were tired of seemingly incessant taxation - for Rome had been in a war with the Parthians for 30 years.

Not all muslims are like that, I lived in the middle east for a long time and there are indeed peaceful muslims who love others from other religions, but ahh…they aren’t doing what their prophet told them to do though are they?

However that’s ok, if they aren’t force converting or trying to kill others for not sharing the same faith then that’s a good thing!

Essentially Muslim and Christians seek the same God, however Satan came and put prophet Mohammed to turn away nearly 1 billion people from the truth, and it’s not difficult to see which one is the right path.

One is of love and forgiveness, other is violence and hatred.

Those *peaceful *Moslems are so in spite of Islam

We all need to pray for the conversion of Muslims. They need to know Jesus Christ as their Saviour. This, however, is nearly impossible, because the study of the bible would not be accepted by family or friends or acquaintances. The Qu’ran states that if a person steals from you, you have the right to have his hand cut off, does it not. If a woman (not a man) is found guilty of adultery she can be stoned to death. Even the size of the stones is controlled - not to large that the person would be killed too quickly, nor too small, where severe pain would not be felt. It has to be just the right size in order to punish the woman with terrible wounds and then death.
Jesus spoke and told his followers forgive seventy times seven and he who is without sin - cast the first stone.
My faith is in our Lord Jesus Christ and I will continue to pray that all peoples will come to know and love our Saviour.
He told us all “I am the way, the truth, and the light”.
