In the book “no god but God” by Reza Aslan he states that Allah was a moon god that was elevated from his status to the god of Islam. I was a bit shocked to see this come from a Muslim.
Some traditions Muslims celebrate are rooted in the pagan society in Mecca at Muhammad’s time. Makes you wonder.
Muhammad was a soothsayer just as many of the people of his time in his society were. Muhammad was a educated soothsayer and nothing more. He told people what they wanted to hear.
Reza Aslan says some strange things in that book, but I don’t recall that one. Could you please tell me what page it’s on? I have the hardcover edition.

Anyway… strange things in that book. There is sufficient (archeological and otherwise) proof against the moon god theory available conveniently on the internet. islamic-awareness.org/Quran/Sources/Allah/moongod.html
Muslims have never believed that “Allah” was anything other than the Creator, Sustainer, Lord of the Universe.

Muhammad was not a soothsayer, either. There were soothsayers according to that same book (yeah I’m reading it too… weird stuff in there seriously!) but he wasn’t one. In fact his life and teachings parallel prophets in the Jewish tradition more than any soothsaying. Moreover… soothsaying is forbidden in Islam… 😃

Oh by the way, people certainly didn’t want to hear what he was telling them. They didn’t want to hear that their idols were powerless.

Hmm, I’ll have to read the book as it does seem strange for a Islamic scholar to say that.
Reza Aslan is not an Islamic scholar. He’s a scholar, yes, of religious traditions. But he was not trained in the Islamic tradition, by Muslim scholars. Just a point of fact.

the moon god theory is flawed…as if Muhammad lived only among pagans…Allah swear by Mecca in the Quran, and i hardly think that Muhammad will make Allah swear by a pagan city. Mecca was a shrine and had pictures of Christian figures and Mecca had Jews and Christian sects…he was raised pagan but converted to a Christian sect and then preached it for Arab pagans so there is no reason to say he worshipped a pagan god.

Converted to a Christian sect? Haven’t heard that one before…

Salaam/peace;
What are the secrets of Islam? What are they “muslims” not telling converts before they say the shahada?

Infidels are free to convert to Islam and Muslims are free to kill fellow Muslims who convert to Christianity or whatever. Very Quranological!

Also known as “The Muslim Brotherhood

CAIR would not even think of publishing something like that on their website; it would be too obvious. But CAIR has been known throughout the world for its sympathy towards organizations of chaos and destruction. This is no secret.

Still think its funny?
Yeah, I think it’s funny, because it’s a joke.

Seriously.

I know CAIR people. I know MAS people. I know MSA people. I don’t really know that many ISNA people but I do know plenty of ICNA people. And trust me, they aren’t terrorists, and they aren’t people you need to be afraid of, and none of them would publish such a bogus pamphlet as this. That kind of pamphlet is rather obviously (1) outdated (if it’s even for real) and (2) from the subcontinent. That’s why I laughed. It’s funny. Can you read it (what parts of it aren’t in English, anyway?) Seriously, it’s not the sort of thing that should strike fear into anyone’s heart… except maybe Pervez Musharraf… rofl.

There is a conspiracy theory here in the USA that I hope you are clever enough to abstain from indulging in. And it is the theory that CAIR (or MAS or any of these other orgs) is some kind of cover for an organization trying to supplant the American government and implenting Khomeini-style reforms across the country. It’s stupid. Seriously.

CAIR and MAS-FF in particular are two organizations devoted to preserving human rights. Human rights, whether the person is Muslim, Christian, Jewish, Hindu, Sikh, or Atheist or anything else. Human rights, whether the person is an Arab, Pakistani, Indian, African, African-American, European-American, Hispanic-American, Asian-American or any other of the diverse races in this country. Human rights, which happen to be guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States. Check them out, visit their websites (CAIR and MAS-FF) and see what they do. Seriously.

We have a very active MAS chapter where I live and I can tell you what they do, and mostly it’s humanitarian activities. Collecting food for the food bank (tons of food) and serving food at shelters, is what comes to my mind. They get a group of ladies to walk in Walk for the Cure which raises money for cancer research. They organized an inter-faith retreat last summer, with a group of Jewish, Christian, and Muslim women. Many of the women in MAS are also active in a local Jewish discussion group called Tikkun. They have an initiative to help parents get more involved in their children’s schools. They collect funds to distribute packages (gifts) to the teachers of Muslim students. They get the community to donate school supplies for children who can’t afford them.

Seriously… and you think they’re the bad guys? 😊
