Reza Aslan says some strange things in that book, but I don’t recall that one. Could you please tell me what page it’s on? I have the hardcover edition. In the book “no god but God” by Reza Aslan he states that Allah was a moon god that was elevated from his status to the god of Islam. I was a bit shocked to see this come from a Muslim.
Some traditions Muslims celebrate are rooted in the pagan society in Mecca at Muhammad’s time. Makes you wonder.
Muhammad was a soothsayer just as many of the people of his time in his society were. Muhammad was a educated soothsayer and nothing more. He told people what they wanted to hear.
Anyway… strange things in that book. There is sufficient (archeological and otherwise) proof against the moon god theory available conveniently on the internet. islamic-awareness.org/Quran/Sources/Allah/moongod.html
Muslims have never believed that “Allah” was anything other than the Creator, Sustainer, Lord of the Universe.
Muhammad was not a soothsayer, either. There were soothsayers according to that same book (yeah I’m reading it too… weird stuff in there seriously!) but he wasn’t one. In fact his life and teachings parallel prophets in the Jewish tradition more than any soothsaying. Moreover… soothsaying is forbidden in Islam…
Oh by the way, people certainly didn’t want to hear what he was telling them. They didn’t want to hear that their idols were powerless.
