What of America is there to be proud of?

Being brought up very patriotic as a child, this is a question I seriously wrestled with as I grew in my Catholic faith.
We sent men to the moon, invented Jazz and a unique form of musical theater. And baseball!

If that’s not an embarrassment of riches I don’t know what is.

Let me remind you that United States is not the only part of America and I must say that what you call “America” have brought lots of misery to many parts of the world.

And hope, freedom, food, medicine, knowledge, etc.

I noticed we are the part of America that those in the south are fleeing to by the millions. Also note that I am not afraid to list where I am from in my profile.

This probably might seem shallow, but I’m proud to be an American because I am an American; just as the French are proud to be French because they are French and so forth.

I was born in this country, my family is in this country, I will probably die in this country. Sure America has problems, but I still love her all the same. For the same reason I love the great state of Missouri and the city of St. Louis; I’m from here.

I could list a bunch of stuff that we did that is great and impressive, our defeat of the Nazis, the Lunar landing, religious freedom, 2nd Amendment rights and so forth and so forth, but in the end it doesn’t matter, because this is my home.

St. Louis is a great place, and I love it. However, it would be almost perfect if you all could learn to say the number “four”. It’s kind of embarrassing to hear you refer to “I-fahrty fahr”. (a more accurate spelling would probably violate the CAF rules) Also, there are two "R"s in “quarter”. You might want to look into that. But hey! That’s just minor housekeeping in an otherwise terriffic place!

Hey, thats only if you are from SoCo! (south county)

Yeah, I love it, our Archbishop rulz teh schoolz!

We should be proud of what this country has the potential to be.

Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States is a good read for Independence day.

What who calls “America?” I’m not sure whose description your referring to.

While there is no doubting the misery Americans - or even the Government - have caused, I believe it unfair to transfer such an opinion to the United States as a whole.

Think of it in terms of the Catholic Church: there have been many priests and Catholics who have caused a lot of misery, but they do so not as Catholics but as those who failed to live the ideals of their professed religion.

In the same way, I believe the American revolution is unparalleled in the history of civilization. For the first time in history, a nation arose not from a shared language, culture, or blood-line, but from a collective, transcendent profession of an objective and undeniable belief in our God-given liberty.

This concept is sort of addressed in the article provided in this thread, but John Adams states:
Statesmen, my dear Sir, may plan and speculate for Liberty, but it is Religion and Morality alone, which can establish the Principles upon which Freedom can securely stand. The only foundation of a free Constitution is pure Virtue, and if this cannot be inspired into our People in a greater Measure than they have it now, They may change their Rulers and the forms of Government, but they will not obtain a lasting Liberty. They will only exchange Tyrants and Tyrannies.
I believe it can be rightly said that any man who disavows Virtue or Morality in speech or action is a traitor to the Revolution and to liberty and hardly worthy of the name “American.”

But that’s just my opinion 😃

. Yet in the Pacific, it was America, not Europe that fought back Imperial Japan. WWII was truly a world war for America, more so than any other country.
I hate to rain on your parade, but that is absolute ignorance. The US was attacked by the Japanese and had reason to be there.

If you want to hold up nations for being in a truly “world war” for no reason, then hold up those that weren’t attacked by either and entered because others were attacked.

America fought bravely in the Pacific and in Europe. You should be proud of that - but you are wrong to imply that other countries did not do the same or you deserve more kudos for it. It was a “world” war for many.

I agree with the poster who said they are proud 'cause it is home. Exactly right. It may not be perfect, but it is home. We are up holding it, our ancestors built it (or at least saw the good in it) and it gives us much to be grateful for - which ever nation it may be.

Whatever makes you happy. Did Germany attack us? Did we need to land at Normandy to protect Hawaii? What beach in France did Australia land at? What was the name of the British carriers at Okinawa

On March 24, 1941 at the Arcadia Conference, the Pacific theatre was named as an American operation. Was Europe and Africa named as British? No. Japan did not fight in Germany, nor visa versa. England did not engage the Japanese. Who besides America poured large resources into both areas? Mind you I am not talking about a token advisor, but carrier groups or whole armies.

Sorry, but there is no denying the fact that without America, WW2 would have been lost. Moreso than any other nation. Be it our aid, our resources, our military equipment, our blood. We sent piolts to Europe before we went to war with Germany. We fought two wars on two fronts sudccessfully. There is a reason why the US became a superpower, and it was not soley because we had the bomb. Russia was a superpower as well before they had the bomb. The US and Russia were equally responsible for the outcome of WW2. It is not arrogance, it is fact.

If enough people (both Americans and non-Americans) were **wise **enough and had an appropriate sense of **gratitude ** then this thread would be the longest on-going thread on this forum with a list a mile long of all the reasons to be proud of America.

The world doesn’t hate America, the world’s Left does.

Many here make the mistake of comparing America with Utopia.-When we do this America falls short. But when we compare America with any other country–then America is the best by a long shot.

No other country does as much for strangers as America. Every disaster that happens --people look at rthe USA with their hands open and say “well what took you so long”.

Never has any country ever done so much for so many and in return received so little gratitude.

I’m proud of

The fired auto workers
Who were twisted, tricked and robbed

The peasant in Guatemala
In a sweatshop got your job

who can’t feed her family
On the pennies that she makes

meanwhile the crime rate’s rising
up and down the Great Lake states
Is that your final answer? Nothing to be proud of? If I felt that way, I would certainly leave the US and go live somewhere better.

AMEN!

Not only that but isn’t it funny how the “world” hates us so…and yet in France, Germany, Canada, Denmark, Russia, Italy, Japan, England, South Korea, Afghanistan, Iraq, Poland, several nations within Western Africa, Ukraine, in fact, pretty much all of Eastern Europe, the Philipines, again, most of the nations in the pacific, even China has a leader one could consider to be “pro-American”…Kuwait, UAE, etc, etc., etc…so I’d like to know…WHERE do they really “Hate” America…other than perhaps Iran???

You know what is ironic?

I would wager to say that more Americans “hate” America than those in other nations.
