which order is the BEST for you? Benedictine, Augustinian, Franciscan, Dominican, Jesuits and Carmelites.

Definitely the Franciscans, I work at a soup kitchen with a group of Franciscan Friars of the Renewal in Bradford, England! 😃

I still need to learn more about these (so I will have to wait to vote) but I find the topic most interesting. Thanks for it.

👍

Dominican of course! The order of preachers is definately for me! I want to go out and preach the good news!

I wish I was able to choose two. I love both the Franciscans and Dominicans but voted Dominicans because of their great Marian spirituality. I used to be drawn most to the Carmelites, but discovered that I was only interested in the exterior. It was not the right spirituality for me. I became convinced that the Dominicans fit me better since I believe in finding Truth and preaching the Gospel. I am very interested in the Sister Servants of the Eternal Word in Birmingham, AL who combine both Franciscan and Dominican spiritualities into one. They live the Rule of St. Francis, but have many Dominican rituals as well. They were founded by a former Nashville Dominican who is the blood sister of Mother Assumpta of the Ann Arbor Dominicans (also a former Nashie). 🙂

Is anyone here able to give a brief definition/explanation/characterization of each?

I’ve always wanted to understand them and never found the right source.

Thanks! 👍

Franciscans all the way BABY!!! Even though this is not an Order, my first love will always be the Diocesan Priesthood 👍

I was disappointed to not find the Cistercian Order on here. I love their austerity and simplicity.

I withheld my vote because of that reason. But after the Cistercian spirituality, I find the Carmelite Order refreshing. I never felt drawn to active orders, and feel like I can relate more to the contemplative side of things.

God bless.

SERVITE ORDER! Servants of Mary! No mention of us?

We are one of the original 13th century mendicant orders, still going strong all over the world.

The only Order founded by 7 men rather than an individual. Feast day of the Seven Holy Founders is Feb 17.

Our charisms are: Marian Inspiration, Fraternity, Charitable Service…

The Servite Family includes Friars, Cloistered Nuns, Active Sisters, Secular Order (not a third order, we have our own Rule of Life, etc.) Secular Institute, Diakonia, Confraternity… you name it!

Have a look: servite.org/index.htm servite.org/secserv.htm

Peace and blessings to all,
Mary Teresa, OSSM

I choose the great order of the Diocese. Orders are wonderful but the shortage of Priests is so felt in the Parish’s across the globe.

I belong to the Servite Community at the National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother, (The Grotto) Portland, OR.

Some of our Friars celebrate Mass at some of the local parishes due to the need. 😃

"In our commitment of service, the figure of Mary at the feet of the Cross shall be our model. Since the Son of Man is still being crucified in his brothers and sisters, we, Servants of his mother, wish to be with her at the foot of those countless crosses in order to bring comfort and redemptive co-operation.”

Exactly not to discount order and the importance of them. This is a poll which relies on personal preference.
We have Oblates of SFD help with weekend Masses, I wish I were a Priest so I could help them all. I cannot imagine a greater honor then being a Priest…God willing someday, I will be.

My prayers and very best wishes are with you, Jerry! All the world needs every priest that Our Lord sees fit to call! May your path be blessed. 🙂

Who checked Jesuits? Are you crazy? No, possibly just not informed. If you ***really ***know what’s going on in that order, and you are a devout Catholic, I don’t believe you would want to join. This is not a long space to allow for complex details, but take as a caveat, and look into things VERY carefully. I am not yapping from nonsense on blogs, I know many Jesuits personally.

Devout Catholics (who typically would offer charity and civility) should also refrain from making snap judgements about fellow Catholics or about religious institutes in good standing with the church.

But not, I would guess, all 20,000 members of the society, so your judgements are of limited value. I would also question how well you have really got to know people for whom you have so much apparent disdain.

Without prejudice to negative experiences you may have had with individual Jesuits - which I am not discounting, since I wasn’t there - your comments are discourteous, both to the society and to the person who expressed an interest in them: for better or worse, that doesn’t encourage me to take your post very seriously. It is also in violation of forum rules:

Can I respectfully suggest that you find a more measured way to offer your opinions? Although many people like to imagine that they are following the example of Jesus in cleansing the temple, in truth very few of us can claim that kind of moral authority. :o

Best wishes.

**Jesuits **

I’ve been on retreat w/ the wonderful Jesuits for many, many years. I’ve learned so much from them, and find it an amazing time/journey at their retreat house.

I enjoy going to Mass at one of our college churches in my Archdioese.

I, too wish I could vote for 2.

Blessings
🙂

I picked Jesuits

I like their great knowledge about the faith, and I’m also a Congruist.

Plus, my favorite Catholic university is Jesuit (Go MU!). 🙂
