Anyone know approximately what percent of the Mass is straight from the Bible?

From what I’ve learned in RCIA so far, the mass basically 100% scriptural! A lot of it comes from the book of Revelation. How the Mass is conducted is part of Sacred Tradition, but each element, from what I’ve learned thus far, is taken from the bible.

The majority of it is quotes from different areas (obviously the readings are :p). Not sure on a percent, but I’d say it’s pretty high up there.

The homily, although based on the readings, is generally not directly from the Bible 😃

Seems like I read somewhere - maybe one of Scott Hahn’s books? - what the actual percentage was. Prior to converting, the author (whoever it was) was convinced that Catholicism is not a Bible-based religion. When he did his research, he was shocked that most of the Mass was straight from the Bible - way more than any non-Catholic service he had ever been to.

I want to tell that to my CCD class, but can’t remember the exact percentage, or which apologetic book I read it in. I suppose I don’t have to have exact numbers, but I’d love to find that research again so I can re-read it. Does that book ring a bell with anyone?

The Extraordinary Form has more direct quotes from the Bible contained in the prayers and responses. However even the Ordinary Form can be tied almost 100% to the Scriptures, maybe not direct quotes.

The Sign of the Cross Mt 28:19
The Priest kisses the altar ( a sign of Christ) Mt 26:49
The Lord be with you -. 2 Tim 4:22
And also with you .

Glory to God … Lu 2:14

Each part of the Creed can be tied to Scripture.
The Our Father is from the Scripture.

Lamb of God Jn 1:29
The Prayer before Holy Comunion Mt 8:8

There are a few examples.

Wouldn’t it be easier to determine what percent ISN’T from the Bible?

I’ll start.

The ANNOUNCEMENTS are not from the Bible.

😛

Before converting to Catholicism, I was spending a good deal of time in “Messianic” fellowships. Some of the rituals that we might not recognize are straight from the Old Testament temple worship.

The priest washing his hands before the consecration is one.

I like how Scott Hahn says, “there, right between the highlighted verses in my Bible was the Eucharist.”

I looked in my own protie Bible, and sure enough, I had much of John underlined or highlighted, but during twenty years, had sort of missed that part where Jesus’ followers turned away from him because they thought he was preaching cannibalism.
🤷

The prayer “In spíritu humilitátis et in ánimo contríto suscipiámur a te, Dómine; et sic fiat sacrifícium nostrum in conspéctu tuo hódie, ut pláceat tibi, Dómine Deus.” found in both forms of the Roman Rite is taken from Daniel 3:39-40

To calculate the exact percentage of the Mass is nearly impossible to calculate. Many parts are direct quotations from Scripture (such as the Sign of the Cross), while others are not (such as the “Domine, non sum dignus”) though they clearly quote it, though changing the words slightly. In addition, there are parts of the Mass such as the “Supra quae” in the Canon which references Melchisedech and Abraham, but should the reference to those scriptural persons be considered? In addition, phrases like “Agnus Dei” are clearly taken from Scripture, however, they are used so frequently that I would personally consider them a normal title of the Church for Christ, like “Lord”. But in any case, the fact is, that both forms of the Roman Rite are saturated in Scripture.

Sorry to quote again from Scott Hahn, (he just says it better than me)

He said at his first Mass, when the Agnus Dei (Lamb of God) began,

“Now,” he said, “I knew immediately where I was. I was in the Book of Revelation, where Jesus is called the Lamb 28 times. I was at the marriage feast which John describes at the end of that very last book of the Bible. I was before the throne of heaven where Jesus is hailed forever as the Lamb—I wasn’t ready for this, though; I was at Mass.”

(I just googled for this quote by him…turns out, today’s his birthday. Happy Birthday, Scott!)

all of it.
for a detailed explanation, the best short book on the topic is by Fr. Peter Stravinskas, the Catholic Church and the Bible. It incorporates his earlier pamphlet on your topic.

here links to this one, and another good new book, which I have not yet read, but sounds good

as for what is NOT biblical, my vote will go for any additions, changes and accretions introduced by a priest (or “pastoral administrator”) with an agenda

The better question is how much of the Bible is from the Mass. The Mass existed before any of the New Testament was set to paper. The New Testament is a product of the Mass, not the other way around.

Or, as the Church puts it: The Mass is the source and summit of the Christian life. From the sacramental life, instituted by Christ himself, came the Church, and from the Church, guided by the inerrant inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the New Testament. Also written by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, only from that full sacramental life do the Hebrew Scriptures come into their full meaning. You cannot fully understand the Bible, outside of the life given by the sacraments.

You are my new favorite poster 👍

And this my new favorite thread (well, ok- tied with the Makeup Vortex and Cloth Diapering).

When I drag my Protestant ILs to Mass with me, I will have to have a copy of that pamphlet for them.
Additionally, it will be Anglican Rite, so we’ll have even more of the Smells and Bells!!!
