We don’t know - but that was not an option so I didn’t vote. The safest thing to say would be more than 0%.

Got to get back to you on this one…will give God a call first.

I’d say 100% of the individuals who, at their death, reject God’s mercy.

Beyond that it would be foolish --and unChristian–to speculate on any given individuals, past, present, or future.

Sorry, haven’t been to Hell recently and can’t speculate. 🙂

((And apparently Satan never listens to his voice mail…))

I realize this sounds like a “gotcha” question, but - if one believes in the Catholic Church’s definition of a mortal sin as something that, if unconfessed, condemns a person to hell…I’d imagine one could at least estimate?

I don’t dare venture a reply, only God can know that.

However, I know the Blessed Mother said at Fatima that most souls go to Hell because of sins of the flesh.

How would one make an estimate? Can anyone see into anyone else’s soul, and tell if it is in the state of mortal sin?

The vast majority of souls perish in Hell unfortunately. This is what Christ meant when He told us to take the straight road that leads to life but very few do so. The wide road that leads to destruction is taken by many.

As I recall The Blessed Mother said in some apparition that most souls go to Purgatory, some to Hell, and a few directly to Heaven. I think it was an approved apparition which would say it is worthy of belief, but not certain.

The Bible implies that a third of the angels went to Hell. One does not expect man to do much better.

On the other hand It would seem wasteful of God to condemn a majority of His Creation.

That leads me to guess a quarter to half.

Of course it isn’t that important. Like all major problems, ultimately the chance of it getting me will be either zero or one. God doesn’t deal in fractions. 😉

Well, it’s Divine Mercy week, so at least for this week, I’d hope to lean more towards God’s mercy and a number closer but not equal to 0.

Ya, and that is why very few people are cannonized. I think this is what Christ meant. Very few are capable and worthy of Heaven at death and most will need Purgatory. Purgatory is not something we should strive for. We should all strive for Heaven. However, few of us will actually choose to do so and we can be thankful for God’s mercy and trust in it.

I still don’t get the point. I mean, you ask for an ‘opinion’. Well, heck, I might have the opinion that 2 + 2 = 43. What possible bearing does my opinion have on the correct answer? (in the case that 2 + 2 = 4). None whatsoever. What possible ‘good’ does an incorrect opinion serve? None whatsoever. Is there any way that any of us can possibly know the correct ‘percentage’ of people who go to hell? NO. . .so what good is it to ask an opinion?

All that will happen is that people will:
  1. Tell you that we can’t know.
  2. Tell you it’s perfectly obvious what the answer is, and if you don’t know, it’s because you’re one who is bound for the bad place.
  3. Speculate, with ‘high percentage’. . .and then other people will come on to chide them for not trusting to God’s mercy.
  4. Speculate, with ‘low percentage’. . .and then other people will come on to chide them for not relying on God’s justice.
  5. Criticize the whole concept.
  6. Praise the concept and criticize the ones who criticize.
  7. Call all religion rotten.
  8. Bring up the Holocaust and Hitler.
  9. Bring up the sex scandals.
  10. Start to go off topic and make jokes.

I still cannot come to grips with that idea. How many of them knowingly choose the path to destruction? So many people are uninformed.

Why is it when I read that verse, instead of understanding the message, I am just filled with fear and anxiety for others. “The vast majority” go to Hell?

I’m sick of it. I’m sick of trying so hard to be a good Catholic, and all it does is makes me feel scared. I want to be a good Catholic, but, really: “The vast majority of people go to Hell”? This doesn’t make me feel happy or anything. I know faith isn’t supposed to make everything sunshine and lollipops but…just…the thought that I am probably going to hell because even though I try, I slip…I just…😦

Aggh! My anxieties never leave me alone. I pray for peace, and it never comes.

I still wish I was blissfully unaware of it all. I don’t want to sin, I just want peace.

:rotfl: This is probably the most correct post that will be posted on this thread.

I’m interested in what people think. I know that what they think is not necessarily an indicator of what is true. I am not using a poll as a way to derive essential truth.

I’m interested in what the individuals on this forum - many of whom are rather devout Catholics - think about the afterlife. It’s informal, yes, but I’m interested. As far as I can tell, I’m not breaking any forum rules with this.

Based on the posts already on this thread, majority opinion will probably be that one cannot say anything more concrete than that it will probably be a majority of souls - greater than 50%.

As you can tell, Catholics in general tend to be more concerned about the state of our own souls and those of the people we are responsible for than those of humanity in general.

But the poll format itself (even though you are careful to ask for ‘opinion’) lends itself to the idea that we can make numerical ‘judgments’.

An more open ended question (not a poll) such as “do you think that a lot of people will go to hell when they die, or only a few” would be a much better way to learn what people think IMO.

You’ll still get people saying that they can’t ‘know’ (which is true) but because you’re not doing a ‘choose from one of these options’ poll constructs you’ll also get people giving you real opinions and not just checking off a number on a poll. (people will often just check a poll option and not go further into posting as to WHY they chose as they did. Not giving a poll means that people who answer are really giving you an answer and not just randomly playing games. IMO of course.)
