What Religions have you attended or belonged to, in your lifetime?

That is the great thing about those churches, you believe the one you are in is always better than all the others.

Why arenā€™t you atttending RCIA with your wife. I truly believe that you must not understand the Catholic faith. Falling away is a clear sign of it. Catholicism is the most ancient of Christian faiths along with Orthodoxy. I believe that you just havenā€™t opened the right books to help in understanding what the Church truly teaches. There are a lot of crazy peolpe teaching lots of heresy today. That is why you should consider getting hold of a new book put out by someone that helped my wifeā€¦ Lucas Police, MTS. He has a great new book that came about after years of teaching RCIA. Just suggesting. It sounds like you have gotten away from the Church. Evolution is not a problem either. I have mixed feelings about it and I have a science degree. I understand much of the theories. You know, if God could create the earth, he could have made it an old earth as well. If he could haved been born of a virgin birth He could have created the world in a split secondā€¦or the literal 6 days. I wonā€™t elaborate on my beliefs. I donā€™t believe those are salvation issues. What you really need to delve into is the theology. Theology doesnā€™t exist to prove that something is true but that some can be explained within reason. Iā€™ve heard this stated much more clearly.

Go to RCIA with your wife. I did. My son alos went through CCD. Now we love the spirituality and our new Catholic gives us new meaning to much of the bad things in our past - Pain and Suffering in particular. Once you start studying the historical record you might be put at ease. Trinity. Go to Genises and read the creation story. Notice the the term ā€œweā€ is used there. The bible has lots of science before science was understood. I learned this as a fundamentalist. So far the only thing that makes any sense to me is Catholicism. Iā€™d rather make the mistake of believing in a God that wants us to come to know him that to go through this life aimlessly making up my own things. If I were living like that I would have committed suicide a long time ago because to me, this life isnā€™t worth living in that state of belief. I love the Lord and He has made himself known to me. Try reading the LOTH. It might help you. Iā€™ve sort of been where you are at before. Itā€™s not a happy place. Why choose to be unhappy when you can choose to submit and allow Godā€™s graces to work in you?šŸ¤·
 
Presbyterian to Baptist (hated it), tried lots of other churches with my husband (Methodist, Seventh Day Adventists, Holiness, Pentecostal, the whole gamut) to Mormonism (for 13 years, married in the temple, the whole smear) to blessedly and forever Catholic (Iā€™m home to stay).

I started out in the Congregational Church in New England when I was quite young. (1960ā€™s)

When the family moved we became **Presbyterians **for a couple years, then missionarys came to our door, then I became Mormon in 1971.

In the 1990ā€™s I attended the Singles LDS ward, then they kicked everybody out that was over 30 years of age.

In the late 1990ā€™s I became RLDS (COC), then they closed down that chapel, after I been a member for awhile. (lack of members, and lack of funds)

I investigated the Catholic church for awhile, even attending RCIA, then they closed that parish after awhile. ( Lack of members, and lack of funds.)

Now I am nowhere, but still attend my sisterā€™s LDS ward occationally.

I was a cradle Roman Catholic receiving all the Sacrements in the RCC except for Holy Orders of course and I left the church when I was in my mid 30ā€™s for the Episcopal church. I was Episcopalian up until Nov. 07 when our parish split for obvious reasons. Our priests and about 3/4 of our former Episcopal parish began a new church under the spiritual leadership of the church of Uganda. We are now an Anglican church within the brand new North American Province of the Worldwide Anglican Communion. My wife, our son and myself are very happy and devout Anglicans in our parish. I couldnā€™t fathom ever being taken away from what God has manifested there for us and the whole parish.
 
  • Born to an agnostic/rationalist/former Presbyterian father and a nominal Episcopalian mother; was raised completely without religion in the buckle of the Bible Belt until around age 10 or 11, when
  • Dad decided that he needed something spiritual in his life, and began investigating various religions. I accompanied my parents in visits to meetings and services. The one faith he did not investigate seriously was Catholicism.
  • After becoming convinced that Christianity is true, Dad decided to join Momā€™s church, the Episcopal Church USA. I was around 14 then, and Dad forced me to attend as well. I went through the confirmation process, then quit going for good.
  • In my late 20ā€™s, after a few years of experimenting with psychoactive drugs, I looked into Zen Buddhism and meditated regularly for a while. I never officially joined with any group.
  • My studies in Buddhism led into an interest in ancient pagan religions and I discovered that there are neo-pagan movements that seek to restore worship of old deities. I spent the next decade or so as a Celtic Reconstructionist/Druid- type neopagan.
  • Began to have doubts about three years ago. Took a graduate art history course in the spring of 2007 which traced the development of philosophy in Europe from the time of the Greeks to the Renaissance, and how that influenced ideas of art and aesthetics. This course exposed me to the history of the Catholic Church, many writings of great saints, and led me to look into Catholic theology. I enrolled in RCIA and was received into the Church last Easter.
 
I was born Catholic in a devout family. My family is still devoutly Catholic. I was well educated in the faith and understood the teachings. I just didnā€™t believe them. I was married in the Church to please my parents, but even in my 20ā€™s I did not believe any of it.

I examined other Christian faiths and greatly admire the Quakers but in my examination I discovered that I was not a Christian. I examined non-Christian faiths and by that journey discovered that I did not believe in an All Powerful Creator God or any god at all.

Years passed and I finally ran across the book, What the Buddha Taught by Wapola Rahula and I finally found my home. It has been 7 years and every day deepens my practice.

Many fallen away Catholics do not continue to believe that which has never been amply taught to them. When you find something that goes against what youā€™ve believed or the truth canā€™t be explained clearly to a person then that person does not have the substance to know what is what. When we find something that went away from what we were taught as children growing up it confuses people. Sometimes they leave rebelliously and other times based on misunderstood teaching. Not every fallen away Catholic is necessarily guilty for falling away. Remember there are many bad examples in the Church. We just went through a modern revelation of such illicit acts by clergy. Itā€™s far too complicated to expand upon. But you probably already know the story anyway.

The Eucharist is difficult to believe. Remember in the bible when the other disciples walked away in John 6. It was a hard teaching and not everyone who says Lord will be saved. The few that stayed had a difficult time with it. Judas left Jesus over the very same from my understanding. He betrayed Jesus for 30 pieces of silver which he gave back. We must be careful with fallen away Catholics who believe that they have left for just cause out of belief. It is best to pray for them and treat them as Protestants if that is what they believe they are. Many of them are really deeply angry at the Church leadership, not the Church of Christā€¦or the Church in general. Poor leadership and example seems to be the biggest stumbling block. It confused people.

SIA, I know your background more now. But you know perfectly well that your comment is meant to be piercing in comparison to who you pointed it at. You are Anglican and have very similar beliefs as usā€¦YOu know this to be true. And to hide behind the false self-riteousness of 'now being Anglican" is just not working for me. You have only changed the location of where you seat but know that the Catholic Church does not recognize a valid Eucharist in the Anglican Church for many reasonsā€¦whether you agree with it or not.

The Eucharist is Christā€¦IS JESUS> But you already know this. So why do you hang out on a Catholic website knowing what Catholics believe yet converted to a faith with very similar beliefs? You know that many Anglicans are converting to Catholicism or already believe that they are Catholic. So why the constant bagering? I really donā€™t get it. You are an older man. Older than me. So why do you act like a young man? Is your conscience bothering you or something?

THe Eucharist is Jesus. That is what we have been handed down for almost 2000 years now. You already know this. I believe you were a Catholic seminarianā€¦is that right?šŸ¤· You studied theology and should know this stuffā€¦you chose to pick rather than speak. And poke rather than educate. I understand where people like you are in your journey for the simple fact that I also fell away from Catholicism for a long while. Many Catholics, including our priests, have asked ā€œdidnā€™t you miss the Eucharist?ā€ My thoughts were, yes, but if we didnā€™t believe one aspect of the Catholic Church we would have rejected these beliefs too if taught differently than the beliefs of the church we joined. My previous faith taught symbolic only, but practiced it weekly with reverence. Strange now that I look at it from the Catholic view again. Now historically I believe from ancient writing sin the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Anglicans do too.:confused:
 
O ā€™ gee Geocacher, let me think ā€¦ šŸ˜› I started out somewhere between a Baptist & a Pentecostal. There was a little Methodistism tossed in in High school. Then after a stint dabbling in very strange things I actually started reading the Bible. After that point it became very obvious that The Catholic Church (Orthodox Brothers excepted) was the ONLY true Christian Church and all others were counterfits of the True Church that Jesus founded. It was the Bible that made me Catholic.
