Okay there are many threads outside of this one that can debate theology.

HOW about a thread that focuses on LEARNING from Catholics to Protestants how the live out their faith. NOT debate whether the fact that works get you salvation or the Church or it doesn’t.

How about the details…Christ intended us to follow his example…to follow him.

What are some ways that you feel that you personal follow the teaching of Christ?

What are some ways that you fall short of following the example set forth by Christ?

If we are honest, we have answers for both.

I’d like to see more discussion about actions in our faith instead of hogging more threads debating what generations have debated that really don’t matter…because God will judge us all one day to see who is correct…how about we LEARN maybe from one another ways to do a better job of living out the example and our salvation.

Protestants as a group don’t agree with Catholics as a group on any one issue other than on Jesus.

However, there are some Protestant sects that agree with Catholics on issues like abortion, on homosexual married clergy, on charity, etc…

What’s difficult is that you may have one group that believes that abortion is wrong, but that homosexual marriage in the name of God is ok. We can only agree with them on abortion in that church.

Then some might be against homosexual marriage, but be Pro-Choice, so we can only agree with them on protecting the sacrament of marriage.

This question would have to be broken down along the lines of denominations of Protestantism.

Which denominations are Pro-Life?

Which are anti-homosexual marriage?

Which actually have soup kitchens and hospitals and orphanages and homes for unwed mothers?

Those would be the ones who have things in common with us.

Of course, I’m not talking about individuals, but about what the religious group believe collectively (for there are some Catholics who against the teachings of The Church are Pro-Choice).

Quite simply I would ask that this thread remain on target…

Answer the questions or move to another THREAD to debate!!!

What are some ways that you feel that you personally follow the teaching of Christ?

What are some ways that you fall short of following the example set forth by Christ?

You’re right.

I stuck to the title of the thread as opposed to the content of the thread which is different than what the title asks.

In essence, I did answer the question (in the title).

I found “likenesses” in Catholics and Protestants.

NO…you shared opinions of Protestants based on broad strokes.

However the way to FIND is to share…however it’s apparent that you will not share…but rather TOUT your position and of course TELL all the Protestants what they are…which is quite funny.

And I quote myself…

And what you call opinions are bonafide facts.

You can’t lump all Protestants in one group as far as beliefs go so the premise of your question is incorrect.

All I did was to show “where” Catholics and Protestants agreed…which is what you asked for .

If I didn’t give you any answers that you like or agreed with, I apologize for not thinking like you…but after all, this “is” a forum for the free and open exchange of personal beliefs.

done…enjoy your site…there is no sharing here or willingness to share.

It’s difficult to list these things from a personal standpoint without coming across as bragging, but I’ll try…

I try to Follow Christ simply.
by remembering the “Greatest commandment: to Love God and each other.
By trying to remain detached from the emotional upset of the world. 'In the world by not of the world.”

I fall short in much the same way. I become distracted by worldly things. Speak to quickly and not always kindly.

I’m really working on trusting God more and worrying less. (long way to go on that one.)

I know that this is somewhat general but I hope this is more like what your looking for.

Peace

James,

Reading your words makes me feel as if I was reading from The Book of Sirach. May I suggest that you look it up if you haven’t already? It’s a great book also known as “The Wisdom of Jesus”.

Let me know if you find it. Til then, here’s a link:

Sirach Chapter 2:
1
1 My son, when you come to serve the LORD, prepare yourself for trials.
2
Be sincere of heart and steadfast, undisturbed in time of adversity.
3
Cling to him, forsake him not; thus will your future be great.
4
Accept whatever befalls you, in crushing misfortune be patient;
5
For in fire gold is tested, and worthy men in the crucible of humiliation.
6
Trust God and he will help you; make straight your ways and hope in him.
7
You who fear the LORD, wait for his mercy, turn not away lest you fall.
8
You who fear the LORD, trust him, and your reward will not be lost.
9
You who fear the LORD, hope for good things, for lasting joy and mercy.
10
Study the generations long past and understand; has anyone hoped in the LORD and been disappointed? Has anyone persevered in his fear and been forsaken? has anyone called upon him and been rebuffed?
11
Compassionate and merciful is the LORD; he forgives sins, he saves in time of trouble.

Some similarities between Catholics & Protestants (not in any particular order);
  • We are saved by GRACE alone
  • Grace is the free gift of God
  • God is the creator of Heaven & Earth
  • We were created by God from dust of the earth (body) & His breath (soul)
  • God is all powerful (Omnipotent) & all knowing (Omniscient)
  • We only worship ONE God
  • All praise, honor & glory belong to God
  • Only one mediator between God & man - Jesus Christ
  • Jesus is the Way, the Truth & the Life
  • Jesus Christ is our Lord & Savior
  • The precious BLOOD of Jesus Christ saves us
  • Jesus is the spotless Lamb of God
  • The Trinity - One God: Three persons; Father, Son & Holy Spirit
  • Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit
  • The Holy Spirit is the Third person of the Trinity
  • The Holy Spirit is the paraclete, counselor, advocate
  • Gifts of the Holy Spirit
  • Jesus was born of the Virgin Mary
  • The Divinity of Jesus Christ - He is fully God & fully Man
  • Jesus Christ died for our sins
  • Jesus rose from the dead
  • Jesus ascended into Heaven
  • Jesus performed many miracles
  • We cannot “work” our way to heaven
  • The Bible is the inspired word of God
  • There is life after death
  • The four last things - Death, Judgment, Heaven, Hell
  • Our bodily resurrection at Christ’s second coming
  • Prayer brings us closer to God
  • The First & Second great commandment - Love
I tried racking my brain and this is what I came up with. Feel free to add on because I’m sure there’s some other things that belong to that list. 🙂

And just to remind you,
this section of The Forum is titled:

Non-Catholic Religions
Comparing and contrasting beliefs
Um…kind of rude response there. That could have been done very differently.

And I’d have to think about my response to this thread. Get back to it. Maybe.

I think that’s pretty accurate except for #1? We are saved by GRACE alone (I believe that the majority of them believe that we are saved through faith alone).

But the rest of the list? Outstanding job!

Yes many Protestants believe that they are saved by faith. But they also believe they are saved by grace through faith. Wouldn’t that qualify that they believe that if not for the Grace of God they cannot be saved?

there are 5 solas… not just one…

Grace alone
Christ alone
Faith alone
Scripture alone
and
Glory to God alone

They all go together. 🙂

I’m sure that some do, but almost all of The Protestants that I’ve personally met and have engaged with believe that it is only through faith alone that one is saved. Or at least, they say they do. When the issue of grace is brought up, they say no way. Only faith is needed to be saved, that grace doesn’t play a part in it. That is, the ones that I’ve spoken to personally.

Now, here’s a great article I found online on the subject:

============================================
Faith Alone:
Code:
What both communities need to do today is learn to translate between each others languages.

Protestants need to be taught that the Catholic formula "salvation by faith, hope, and charity" is equivalent to what they mean by "faith alone." And Catholics need to be taught that the Protestant formula "faith alone" is equivalent to what they mean by "faith, hope, and charity."

Otherwise, the formula itself is flatly unbiblical. The phrase "faith alone" (Greek, pisteos monon), occurs exactly once in the Bible, and there it is rejected: You see that a person is justified by what he does and not by faith alone. (James 2:24).

All other places in the Bible just mention "faith", without the word "alone", 22This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe... 28For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from observing the law. (Rom.3:22, 28).

Faith is absolutely necessary for salvation, the faith of Gal.5:6, For in Christ Jesus... The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.
Abraham was justified by his faith, but a faith with works, he left his country and job and friends to go to where the Lord was asking him to go, he even went to sacrifice his beloved son Isaac, because he believed in God, and that's faith!
- You foolish man, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless? Was not our ancestor Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. (Jam.2:20-22).
- Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness. (Rom.4:3, Gal.3:6, Jam.2:23, Gen15:6,22).

How many Protestants have you talked to? And who exactly are you including in your definition of “Protestant?”

Because it is really strange that ALL the Protestants I’ve talked to lately believe that it is through the Grace of God that we are saved. Our priest just did a sermon on this very point last Sunday.
