For some reason I’ve always loved sad songs. Don Henley’s “The Boys of Summer” always gets me with the lines “Out on the road today, I saw a Dead head sticker on a Cadillac/ A little voice inside my head said 'don’t look back, you can never look back/ Thought I knew what love was, what did I know?/ Those days are gone forever, I should just let them go, but…”

Drat, where’s the Kleenex box?
That ones gets me too.

I saw an interview with him once and he explained that “Dead Head sticker on a cadillac” refers to Grateful Dead fans who are now (at the time the song was written) in their 40’s and 50’s and much more affluent than they were when they were younger.

It is a nod to growing older but not up, if you will.

The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald - Gordon Lightfoot
“Emotionally”: this encompasses quite a mix for me; joy, elation, sadness, longing.

For this particular song, that line, “Fellas, it’s been good to know ya!”

“Don’t You Forget About Me” - Simple Minds

“Fernando” - ABBA

“Orinoco Flow” - Enya, or Celtic Woman

“Come On, Eileen” - Dexy’s Midnight Runners

“I Just Wanna Stop” - Gino Vanelli

“My Maria” - Brooks and Dunn

To the original poster, thanks for asking!

Tonight, Tonight,1979 - Smashing Pumpkins
November Rain - Guns N’ Roses
Still havn’t found what I’m looking for - U2
Alive - Pearl Jam
Come as you are - Nirvana

Maurice Ravel’s “Pavane For A Dead Princess

Green Day’s “Wake Me Up When September Ends”

Let it be
Yup, “Let it Be” and “The Long and Winding Road” do it for me, so do “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother” by the Hollies, and something about “A Whiter Shade of Pale” (Procol Harum) does it too.

Hallelujah, the Rufus Wainwright version. Lots of VNV Nation.

Disappoint, Assemblage 23

*Give me the chance
I was denied
To sit and talk with you
For one last time

Did I disappoint you?
Did I let you down?
Did I stand on the shore
And watch you as you drowned?
Can you forgive me?
I never knew
The pain you carried
Deep inside of you*

Voices Carry - Till Tuesday
Sweet Jane- Lou Reed
Be Mine - David Gray
There She Goes & Losing My Religion by REM
Sweet Child of Mine - G&R

Just thought of another one that used to have me sobbing when I was in high school:

From the Musical Fame:

On My Own

Somthimes I wonder Where I’ve been
Who I am Do I fit it in
Make believing is hard alone
out here on my own

We’re always proving who we are always reaching for that rising star
to guide me far and shine me home
out here on my own

WHEN I’M DOWN AND FEELING BLUE
I CLOSE MY EYES SO I CAN BE WITH YOU
OH BABY BE SRONG FOR ME BABY BELONG TO ME
HELP ME THROUGH HELP ME NEED YOU

Until the morning
sun apears
making light of all my tear I dry the tears I’ve never shown
out here on my own

BUT WHEN I’M DOWN AND FEELING BLUE CLOSE MY EYES…

Somethimes i wonder where i’ve been
who I am do I fit it in
I may not win but I can’t be thrown
out here on my own

In My Life - Beatles
Remember When - Alan Jackson
The Dance - Garth Brooks
Time In A Bottle - Gordon Lightfoot
Believe - Josh Grobin
Where’ve You Been - Martina McBride
True - Spandau Ballet
Veronica - Elvis Costello
Return to Pooh Corner - Kenny Loggins

And the feel-good song for spring and summer:
Centerfield - John Fogerty

And the one song I cannot help dancing to:
I’m Alright - Kenny Loggins

Where've You Been - Martina McBride:
I believe that was Kathy Mattea, if you’re talking about the song where the couple ends up in a nursing home and the woman doesn’t speak until her husband comes to visit her. That was a song based on Mattea’s grandparents (and it always gets to me, too!)

Alan Jackson’s “Remember When” also touches me, especially when one realizes that the song tells the story of his marriage, including the time he and his wife separated. The most touching songs always have some foundation in real life. Which is why I’m surprised no one’s mentioned Alan’s “Where Were You When the World Stopped Turning?”

And there’s a song by Tracy Lawrence about a man going off to war and he tells his buddies to keep going to the high school football games and other things and if anything happens to him, “find someone for Amy” (his fiancee)… and at the end of the song, you know he didn’t come back because the song says “we haven’t missed a single home game… I introduced Amy to a good friend… but, you know, she’s just not ready.”

My husband CANNOT listen to that song, because… my name is Amy.

And while I normally don’t like the Dixie Chicks, whenever I hear the song “Travelin’ Soldier” I just get choked up:

One Friday night at the football game
The Lord’s Prayer said and the anthem sang,
A man said, "Folks, would you bow your heads,
For a list of local Vietnam dead?"

Crying all alone under the stands
Was the piccolo player in the marching band,
One name read but nobody really cared,
But a pretty little girl with a bow in her hair.

I cried, never gonna hold the hand of another guy,
Too young, they told her, waitin’ on the love of a travelin’ soldier,
Our love will never end, waitin’ for the soldier to come back again,
Never more to be alone, when a letter says the soldier’s comin’ home.

Okay, I’m a mess for the night! 'bye!

Currently I’m stuck on the Five for Fighting version of Art Garfunkel’s song, “All I Know”

*I bruise you, you bruise me
We both bruise so easily
Too easily to let it show…

…I love you, and that’s I all know…*

sob :crying: sob

BTW - this song can currently be found on the “Chicken Little” movie soundtrack.

Actually, any Five for Fighting song gets me! (Remember “100 Years?”)

Artist: Collective Soul
Album: Collective Soul
Song: “Reunion”

Lyrics for the song “reunion”

Change will come
Change is here
Love fades out
Then love appears

Now my water’s turned to wine
And these thoughts I have
I now claim as mine
I’m coming home

Change has been
Change will be
Time will tell
Then time will ease

Now my curtain has been drawn
And my heart can go
Where my heart does belong
I’m going home

It’s the combo of the lyrics and the music that moves me.

Also, I find parts of Tim McGraw’s song “live like you are dying” to be moving…

Lyric: “I gave forgiveness I’d been denying”

Sometimes I don’t forgive like I should.

Lyric: “well I finally read the good book and I took a good long hard look at what I’d do if I could do it all again”

Sometimes I wished life and rewind.

Lyric: “Like tomorrow was a gift and you got eternity to think about what’d you do with it what did you do with it what did I do with it what would I do with it’”

Scary thought what happen today I will have eternity to think about! What I did today, what I fail to do today will be with me for eternity. What will I do with tomorrow?

Oh, brother, I just heard another one! Had this song been out twenty years ago, it’s the one my dad and I would have danced to at my wedding. I believe the group is called Heartland and the song is “I Loved Her First”.

Although “Daddy’s Little Girl” will always make me blubber!
