Thanks to everyone for taking the time to respond to my OP.

I just had a very long conversation with someone I trust who is knowledgeable in these things. My mind is at ease and with a deeper understanding.

Thanks again and God bless.

I hope that the decision that you made was in line with church teaching.

The only thing I would add to the discussion is this…if your priest/spiritual director is telling you go against church teaching…then your priest is WRONG. Run.

Also, I wonder what your husband has to say about all of this. I wonder (because you haven’t said) if your husband is the reason that you are having such a hard time with this teaching…if HE is pushing you to sin in this area. If that is the case, I am truly sorry for you and hope that within your marriage you can find a way to be together without violating church teaching.

I also want to reiterate what someone else said, it is the greatest of pridefulness to think that you and not 2000 years of learned and holy men and women know what God thinks.

Blessings - Katherine

Not in the least bit. My husband is a great man and a wonderful person. We are extremely close and in sync with each other. Everything we’ve ever decided on has been through mutual trust and respect, and we are in the same place.

I appreciate the concern though.

It is definitely something to consider. I always said I’d try again if I felt God was calling me to it. I don’t feel God is calling me to it… well, at least I don’t* think *I do. But I will give it some further thought, and you are right, it is lent. Thank you.
Debora, I don’t mean for the following to sound accusatory, but your reply to a post seems to indicate that you vacillate between consciously and knowingly using contraceptives and going your own way on this matter, and then turning around and trying to honor the Church’s teaching on sexuality.

However, out of conscientious reverence for the Blessed Sacrament, which is Our Lord Himself, I find myself forced to send you this via PM to make sure you read it. You may have already seen this, but, my conscience will not let the matter go until I am satisfied you have read this.
Whatever you do, Debora, please don’t profane the Eucharist by receiving it in an improper disposition. I imagine you are quite familiar with the consequences that using artificial contraceptives will have on your spiritual grace. Please confess your sins before receiving.
There’s also nothing wrong with abstaining from the Eucharist time to time…there is nothing shameful about acknowledging one’s unworthiness to receive the Sacrament (indeed, our grace is partially unmerited by virtue of our fall and our concupiscence) God knows I abstain every now and again, but not many people do anymore. I pray that you do.
God bless you.
I apologize if you take this as a personal affront to you. I assure you that it is not.

God bless.

Yes if there is a serious reason one may make use of NFP…it is something that she and her spouse and perhaps her spiritual adviser can discuss…and the couple can judge before God.

Such is the only moral means open to the person.

No spiritual adviser/director/confessor can say contraception is a possible good choice…

They cannot say “using contraception is ok” anymore than “murder is ok”

(such would be invalid spiritual direction from the get go)

It is an intrinsically evil means.
Such would of course apply to any intrinsic evil.

Seeing how it is Lent now --and the theme of this thread was conscience --I thought to post this quote for all --for our Lenten Meditation…or Lenten examine (of course such is aimed at gravely evil things…but it can be good (after we have searched for the big things) by analogy to apply it also (but not in the same way…and of course without scruple) to the many smaller repeated venial areas that can hide from the light):

“We must free ourselves from the hidden lies with which we deceive ourselves. God sees through them, and when we come before God, we too are forced to recognize them. “But who can discern his errors? Clear me from hidden faults” prays the Psalmist (Ps 19:12 [18:13]). Failure to recognize my guilt, the illusion of my innocence, does not justify me and does not save me, because I am culpable for the numbness of my conscience and my incapacity to recognize the evil in me for what it is.”

–Pope Benedict XVI Encyclical Letter: Spe Salvi

I had a major issue dealing with conscience. I won’t discuss the particulars to avoid the endless judgmental microsurgical minutiae that goes along with these issues.

How was the problem resolved? Simple, I just accepted and praised God for the gifts I received and ignored the rest of the distractions.

Hello dailey,

Here is the discription that came with the photo when I found it. I heard about this picture from my parish priest who keeps a copy of it to give him strength.

Martyrdom of Fr. Francisco Vera

The picture below shows the martyrdom in early April of 1927 of Fr. Francisco Vera, a parish Priest of Sangre y Cuerpo de Cristo in the city of Jalostotitlan, Jalisco.

Padre was celebrating Mass in secret for his people when he was discovered by Freemasons and, with the support of a socialist and vehemently anti-Catholic government and media, executed on the spot. He was not allowed to remove his vestments, and this photograph was sent to President Calles by the leader of the squad to prove how zealous he was being against the Catholic Church. Father Vera’s body was taken to a garbage dump outside the city, where it was further desecrated.

This scene was just one of numerous anti-religious atrocities committed by the Mexican government during the Cristero War, a period of Catholic resistance to state persecution comparable in sentiment if not in scale to the persecution of Jews in Nazi Germany.
/QUOTE

Thank you for the story. So sad.😦

I see the thread seems to have mostly reached it’s conclusion, but I wanted to add:

We are to take up our crosses and follow Christ, as He asked us to. Trying to find ways to squeeze the maximum amount of pleasure out of life for the minimum amount of work and worry is not why we are here.

Our crosses bring us closer to God…what is pleasure and worry-free living here, when our lives are nothing but the blink of an eye in the vastness of Eternity?

We should gently, lovingly, stoically embrace the the crosses in our lives, just as Jesus did His. They are what will ultimately help us in our great journey towards heaven, and once we accept these sufferings, these denials and sacrifices, as both good for ourselves and for others, much of their bitterness and confusion is overcome.

We learn to exist as part of the world, not to be consumed by it. I will pray for you and your husband, OP. God Bless.

As for climaxing outside of sex, well, speaking as a budding Priest I honestly don’t think its bad. Every happy couple should do what they call spooning or cuddling up or caressing each other now and then. A certain Saint did it a lot with his wife so much so that he was often accused of overdoing it yet in reality he was just showing affection as Francis de Sales said. Though hugs and caresses aren’t the essence of love itself, they bring the spouses closer together. In fact, I once saw a page from a breviary or something which showed Saint Anne and Joachim meeting at the gate as tradition goes; the painting actually showed Joachim caressing Anne’s chest. It wasn’t depicted as sexual, it was depicted as an act of intimate love between Joachim and Anne.
Speaking as a budding priest, would you say its okay for me and my boyfriend to have mutual stimulation of sexual organs? I guess you would… since you already think its okay to seperate the lifegiving potential from the sexual act.

You need to obey the Church instead of leading people astray, if you really wanna become a good priest.

What step should I take if my conscience doesn’t line up with a couple Church teachings regarding sexuality?

My conscience is well informed. I’ve done a lot of reading and a lot of praying… especially since I got married, but even before then. I grew up reading Mary Beth Bonacci, and have also read Christopher West and TOB multiple times.

I’ve spoken with my priest/spiritual adviser about these issues in great depth and he instructed me to follow my conscience, and reiterated that I do have a well informed conscience. I honestly think there is human error within the Church regarding these issues, though I still believe in the sanctity of the Church as being the one true Bride of Christ.

Sometimes I find myself even entertaining the idea of leaving the Church, only to catch myself and remind myself that of course, I would never do that.

Can I still be a faithful Catholic while following my conscience in regards to the issues I’ve spoken about with my adviser?
If a well informed Catholic truly believes that they would be committing a sin by following a doctrinal decision, then they must follow their own conscience in the matter, because no one can violate their conscience if they think they are committing a sin. But to state this is to state an extreme hypothetical, and I think only applies in a case in which a Catholic could demonstrate from Catholic teaching that a particular decision was mistaken. The Catholic teaching on contraception has been consistent for 2,000 years and is one of morals in which sphere the Magisterium is held to be infallible. There are many things which we may not fully understand, but a willingness to adhere to Catholic doctrine is part of what being a faithful Catholic means. No one says it is always easy; but God will always grant the graces if they are asked for.

@deb: Aaaargh! The suspense was killing me, and now this! 😃 Seriously though, I get that whatever conclusion you have come to you don’t want to share here, and of course that is OK.

1 Timothy chapter 4

**I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingly power proclaim the word; be persistent whether it is convenient or inconvenient; convince, reprimand, encourage through all patience and teaching.

For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine but, following their own desires and insatiable curiosity,* will accumulate teachers and will stop listening to the truth and will be diverted to myths.

But you, be self-possessed in all circumstances; put up with hardship; perform the work of an evangelist; fulfill your ministry.**

Maybe I should have worded a my words better: I did NOT mean simulating the sexual organs nor did I include people utside of marriage. Spooning is when a couple cuddles up and are affectionate with each other in an intimate way. Because a couple touch each other closely doesn’t mean they’re having sex, it is merely a privelege which they have towards each other.

Sex is love as I said, and when a couple has sex, they are doing it to not only have pleasure, get even more attracted to each other and show each other affection but with this love there is the potential for a child to be conceived and that is of course good because building a family unites family. But I don’t see anything wrong with a husband and wife caressing each other, cuddling up in bed to keep each other warm or even having a private dinner between each other with both wearing clothes that please the others eyes. Saint Ignatius said in one of his letters that it isn’t wrong because it isn’t a perverse act, its just affection. I never meant that touching the sexual organs outside of the marriage act is good or virtuous.

For a budding Priest, you sure have a whole lot of learning to do about what the Church teaches. You condemn lust, then promote it. Worse, you use as an example some concocted story about a “certain Saint”. What you suggested about climaxing outside of sex is the first step down a very slippery slope towards exactly what the Church says is wrong and which has been so well pointed out by others here.

And what you wrote about the NFP is puerile, to say the least, on a thread full of married people and started by a married woman. As a matter of fact, I doubt you are a ‘budding priest’ and say you are far from ready to even entertain the idea.
How was it puerile? I just gave my opinion and wanted to help. I am a budding Priest for your information and have had this vocation for three years. Just because I didn’t word myself correctly doesn’t mean I’m some modernist. I wrote a post showing what I really meant

For clarification:
Debora123 in her OP said: 2. I don’t think it’s wrong for husband and wife to sometimes bring each other to climax outside of intercourse. (as long as it doesn’t become a substitute for intercourse, I see nothing wrong with it happening on occasion).
Then in post #75, MrSylvester said: As for climaxing outside of sex, well, speaking as a budding Priest I honestly don’t think its bad. Every happy couple should do what they call spooning or cuddling up or caressing each other now and then.
then you write the post quoted at the top. You seem a little confused about climaxing, spooning, cuddling and sex in these posts. saying that couples should spoon, cuddle, keep each other warm, or have dinner is not the same conversation as whether climaxing outside of intercourse is permissible.

So someone says “I think mutual masturbation to male climax without vaginal intercourse is fine.”

You then say, “I don’t think that’s bad, every happy couple should cuddle.”

That’s what’s called a non sequitur.

It’s ok. I think he just isn’t familiar with our use of the term “climax” in this context. No harm, no foul.

then hopefully this little side note will goad him to seek out a dictionary or encyclopedia! 😛

PS: I’m glad that you’ve found peace (at least that’s how I read your post above).
