What Should I Do?

Here’s my situation:

When I applied to universities, I put on my “extracurricular section” of the apps that I had led high-school confirmation retreats for two years, leading three each of these years. At the time, I had not yet fulfilled this, but was telling them what I intended to do with my senior year, which was (is) not yet completed. At the time, I thought this would be true- that I would lead those many retreats. However, when the retreat weekends came, I missed them- I had work one weekend, another weekend I fell ill, etc. By the time I finish high school I will only have led two retreats, four less than I told the universities.

My question is, is it sinful not to go back and tell the universities that I accidently put the wrong information?

The problem is, I already have been accepted into the university I want to go to, and if I tell them about this they may rescind my admission, as on the application it said that the discovery that any part of the application is false would result in such. And that would be horrible, given that I didn’t intend to lie and I seriously doubt that that one tidbit of information was the “make or break” my application.

Technically, I didn’t take an oath that everything was true or take an oath that I would fulfill these things, if that changes anything.

What should I do?

Leave it be. Maybe you could try to lead some extra retreats, to make up the number that you are missing. (Maybe the person who had to take your place on the ones that you missed would appreciate you taking their spot on some upcoming retreats.)

But for the future, make sure never to record that you did something that you haven’t yet done - even if you are absolutely certain that you will do it - because it could definitely come back to bite you.

I seriously doubt whether you led two retreats versus six retreats weighed heavily on the admissions process. Learn the right lesson from this experience and move on.

When it’s appropriate, get involved with the confirmation prep program at your parish or university and nothing you wrote will be in error. Obviously you are prepared to do it, it just hasn’t happened in the chronological order that you listed. God is calling you to do just that. God bless you for this worthwhile ministry. And good luck in school.

I agree with the previous posts. The number of retreats you led did not affect your admission. As far as the university is concerned, forget it. It wasn’t a purposeful mistake and it really doesn’t matter to them; you didn’t get someone else’s spot because of the error.

If it really bothers you, go to confession. Otherwise, keep up your involvement in Parish activities. You never know where the Almighty might lead you. 👍
