What side of Da Vinci debate are you on?

As the saying goes, the only thing evil needs to be successful is for good people (Catholics) to do nothing…

So I can’t agree that we should not say anything against *The Da Vinci Code * simply because it is called fiction or considered entertainment. The Romans fed countless Christians to the lions and watched them get torn to shreds. They called it entertainment. Today, the persecution continues in the form of blasphemy. Open your eyes and see. Dan Brown’s novel sold 45,000 millions copies – with the help of the liberal media – which contains brutal blasphemy against the Divinity of Our Lord Jesus and Christ, the Gospel, and so on. Is it not ironic how the *Da Vinci Code * is also called entertainment?

In my opinion, any Catholic who sees the film for entertainment is insulting our Divine Savior to say the least.

Isn’t this common sense?

I’m of the opinion that if someone’s faith is so shallow that something like the Da Vinci Code can rattle them out of the Church, then so be it. If not the Da Vinci Code now, then it would have been something else later. Of course, that doesn’t mean you should give up on them. Hopefully you can bring them back into the fold, and hopefully this will help them gain a stronger faith.

This whole thing is just another sad reminder of the continuing loss of the line between reality and fiction in our society.

Yep. I agree.

I’m a huge fan of Dan Brown and I cannot wait for ‘The Da Vinci Code Movie’ It’s going to be awesome!

I totally agree too. The book was really good as were Dan Brown’s other novels. 🙂
I havent read the code yet, but I did read Digital Fortress, and it was quite good

Have you ever heard a fellow Catholic say the Da Vinci Code blasphemy “is just a work of fiction,” and that there is no need to protest against it? I have. And when I do, my blood pressure goes up…
Prepare for your blood pressure to go up. It’s just a book and I find it hilarious that you consider it a good use of time to complain about it.

John R:
In the case of The Da Vinci Code, we’re dealing with a case of blasphemy which is harming the good image and reputation of Our Lord and the Catholic Church – at least in the eyes of millions of people.
Anyone capable of recognizing flaws in things they value knows that the Catholic Church is doing a fine job of tarnishing its reputation without any help from a book.

Well, I think that much like Harry Potter, and quite possibly some of the bible itself, it is well written fiction, nothing more.

And before I get swamped for saying some of the bible is fictitious, how many of your actually believe that the world was creating in 4400BC, as can be deduced from careful reading of the bible?
Enough people to provide me with plenty of opportunities to shake my head and wonder. If you think no one genuinely beleives the world is about 6000 years old, there are entire huge chunks of the country you should stay away from to preserve your sanity.

Apparently you have very little regard for books. I think saying something is “just a book” shows unbelievable contempt for one of the most powerful media of communication our culture possesses.

I’m quite the opposite. Unfortunately it also happens to be not a very good book.

Penny Plain:
It’s fiction. The dignity of Christ will manage.

But we aren’t. Your point about the albino monks is a good one, though; perhaps melanoma killed them all?

Should I be agreeing with you 😃 ? Good points, 🙂

If Jesus can overcome a little thing like death, sin, and the devil without our help and even despite us, I really think he can survive a silly book. ##

I can’t say it any better than this.

Seems to me that if the faithful simply said that it was an unoriginal poorly written work of fiction plagiarized from another unoriginal poorly written work of fiction, then the hype would have fizzled out quickly.

Fact of the matter is that publicists count on the moral outrage in order to gain free promotion. That there is no such thing as bad publicity in the entertainment industry has been made painfully self evident with this whole circus.

👍 The only time I have EVER agreed with you!

The plot is decent in an if you squint and don’t think too much way, and I have nothing against anything and everything being story fodder. I do it. But the man can’t make a character engaging to save his life.

I don’t think Dan Brown ever claimed TNC was fact.
According to my priest, he did say it was based on fact, which is a major problem with it.

It’s a badly written book, with awful character delineation. If you want well written excitement with a moral twist, try Robert Crais’ thrillers.

My priest suggested we all go to another movie the weekend DVC comes out, to give a boost to any other flick and lower DVC’s ratings.

Ah, see, I won’t do that. I have a rule that says I have to go see every Tom Hanks movie. No matter how bad the book was.

I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Remember that they’re also bringing out the Harry Potters as films, and the Harry Potters are quite spiritual. And then there’s Narnia–the first film was a huge success, and I believe all seven will come out on consecutive years. Then there’s the Lord of the Rings, huge successes, deeply Christian, whether the film makers recognized that or not.

Christianity will survive DVC.
