So, I would write like The Most Rev. Bishop Robert J. Carlson with Fr. James Hast, OFM, Cap.?

A Pedophile  A Bishop near me was a pedophile and got arrested
I met him once and he was actually quite nice. he would have these parties just for special little boys like me at his house. But now he can’t have any more parties.😦

Dear FriendofJesus:

I am sorry about the bishop you mentioned, but the question here is how to address a bishop. Your response to that question was “Pedophile”.

My friend, such an answer is NOT a friend of Jesus. To offer such disrespect is blasphemous and a sin.

You need to apologize for this.

The Catholic Dictionary defines blasphemy as:
Speaking against God in a contemptuous, scornful, or abusive manner. Included under blasphemy are offenses committed by thought, word, or action. Serious contemptuous ridicule of the saints, sacred objects, or of persons consecrated to God is also blasphemous because God is indirectly attacked. Blasphemy is a grave violation of charity toward God.

It is not at all out of date to address an archbishop as Your Excellency. It is most polite and most respectful.
I think moreover God likes this reverence best.

When in doubt, choose the MOST respectful and most reverent.

Eastern Rite Bishops are usually Your Grace, or Bishop firstname.

Patriarchs are usually Your Beatitude, tho certain orthodox patriarchs use You Holiness.

Excellency is customary for Western Bishops.

Fisheaters.com has an article on adressing clergy. While it doesn’t entirely agree with what I read in “Inside the Vatican”, it’s pretty close, and includes the modes I’ve grown up with.

Here is how I would word the invitation:

The Archdiocese of Munich-Freisburg cordially invites you to the celebration of the Solemnity of Christ the King

The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass commences at 9AM on Sunday, November 23, 2008
and
will be celebrated by:
His Excellency, the Most Rev. Joseph Ratzinger, DD
who will be joined by
Rev. Msgr. Georg Ratzinger
Rev. Richard John Neuhaus
and the priests of the Archdiocese

Ok, so this is outdated and fictitious, but, this is how I have worded things in the past and my bishop has signed off on the invitation.

I hope this helps.
