What to do if you witnessed an apparition?

If I were to have an aparition of Mary or an Angel what would I do to make sure it is a Divine apparition and not a demonic one?

Should I start praying the Hail Mary to see whether they pray with me or get angry? How many Hail Mary’s do you think Satan could handle before he reveals himself or would it just be a case of not parying with me would give it away?

In either case when the apparition ceased would I go straight to my priest?

I haven’t had an apparition and highly doubt I will but I just wondered.

Don’t think I could know what I would do beforehand…

After I would go straight to a priest for advice.
 
I think if that happened to me, I would not tell anyone unless it happened again. At that point I would go to my priest and take it from there. AFAIK most true apparitions appear more than once to the people involved, although I know people who claim to have had an apparition only once, but never brought it to the Church. Whether they were true or not, I don’t know.
 
In the very unlikely event of an apparition, I should follow the example of St Bernadette and the Children at Fatima and pray the Rosary (I’m unable to kneel, owing to disability, but in that circumstance, I’m pretty sure I would drop to my knees!)

Only the Church can discern if it is genuine or not. Even if an individual claims it to be real does not mean it is real.

This may sound tongue in cheek, but I would wait for a second one before going public.

I remember from an old novel, one of the characters said something to the effect, “a demon would seem fairer but sound fouler…”
 
Report to a) my spiritual advisor and then, if he concurs, b) the Bishop.

If we have the presence of mind, it is good to ask that the apparition worship God. Demons cannot and will not do that. Just part of testing the spirits.
 
I’d just keep on praying and staying in the sacraments.
Just because an apparition appears is no cause for panic or to make a scene anywhere about it.
These things exist, so why all the fuss?
 
I am simply amazed at the faith people here put in the demonic over the divine.
 
God would give you the grace to handle it.

If Mary told you something classed as revelation or for the whole church, that is something to run by the bishop. If ‘Mary’ (note the quotes) told you it was ok to leave your husband and move in with some guy, that is not Mary. You should talk to your priest. Or if she tells you to go tell such and such to so and so, run it by the priest FIRST. The real Mary understands. I would discuss it with your spiritual director, because that is part of their job.

You may have a private relationship with Mary that does not go beyond you. Depending on your spiritual director, you might want to discuss that.

Think of it this way: if you saw her and she wanted a nice conversation with you, and you started going berserk with Hail Mary’s and demands to prove she is not demonic, that is not a good way to start a friendship. How could she get a word in edgewise? Would you do that with any other sister in Christ? Such stuff.

A lot of things happen that are not to be advertised particularly. For one thing, they are not directive beyond the individual, and sometimes not directive. I’ll tell you two that have happened to me I don’t consider anything “big”. One was when I was around six years old: I was in the choir and part of the procession going down the aisle. All that church had was the organ, but behind and above me the music started from the balcony, joining in the organ music. I turned and looked and there were musicians. The guy playing trumpet winked at me and another musician indicated with his finger that I should turn around and get back to walking in the procession. All I did was glance. When I was sitting down I turned around and looked back: no balcony. There never had been a balcony there, but I saw them clearly. I never heard them playing after that, but every time I was in the sanctuary I checked to see if it had a balcony. Every time I have seen angels I did not realize it until later, sometimes long after. I saw one with an old pickup truck, baseball cap, scraggly beard and overalls once: he looked like an old hillbilly and it was only later that I realized what he had done was something no human could have done. It just seemed normal at the time.

When I was fifteen I had not been in Catholic church since I had been baptized, as far as I know. I walked into a church and there was this heat and light coming from the front. I was curious about it and tracked it down to the candle. I wondered about how much heat and light was coming from one small candle, as I stood looking at it from near the altar rail.

The key to dealing with apparitions is that Jesus is still on the throne, and they neither make you more or less holy in themselves. It is what you do with them. But neither should you seek them.
 
When St Padre Pio saw a false apparition of the Blessed Mother, he knew it wasn’t her because he didn’t feel afraid, so he spit in her (his) face.

And looking back on most approved apparitions, didn’t the person appearing finally TELL the seer to go tell the bishop or priest??? I’m thinking of Fatima, Lourdes, Guadalupe, etc…

I think you are right, likewise angels always seem to start off with ’ do not be afraid '.
 
The Church investigates apparitions for possible logical explanations.
Are the tears coming from the statue of Mary caused by a broken water pipe?

Ask if what I see is a matter of imagination, or something that can easily be explained away.
Discuss with pastor or deacon how what I see contributes to personal faith.
One day I was at Mass. As the host was elevated, it seemed as if I could see the Christ’s head in the host, like you on the medal.
I already believe in transubstantiation.
It could easily have been my imagination as I was rapt in prayer.
It could also have been the way the light came through the windows at the time of consecration.
The discussion of what I saw/experienced did not need to go any further than with the deacon.

I journal on a semi-regular basis. My spiritual director suggested using lectio divina for the first line of each journal entry. That would be another place to record what you witnessed or experienced.
There is much private revelation that remains private, awaiting confirmation that the apparition.
Continue praying, reading Scripture, and learning about your Faith while seeking discernment.
If what you experience is from God, you will never be asked to sin. It will be in line with Scripture and the magisterium, as well as your personal state in life.
 
We had an apparition once in our daughter’s bedroom. We did not call a priest or bishop. The apparition was a woman with long, black hair and white skin…extremely white, as if she dipped her face in flour. She was wearing a long, black dress and was standing with her hands extended almost like claws.

I did not see her, but my daughter did. She was terrified and would not sleep in her room for days on end. I had to put holy water around, as well as crucifixes and holy pictures. It was then that she prayed her night prayers. When I say she was terrified, I am not exaggerating.

She had been with her school chums, and they had been playing that stupid game where you stand in the dark with a candle in front of a mirror and try to conjure up the demon in the mirror, who is sometimes referred to as “Bloody Mary”. If she just managed to scare herself, that would teach her a lesson, but other strange things began to happen. A big picture fell off the wall without breaking the wire holding it on. The nail was still there. It just came down on its own. I came home and found my statues covered up in brown paper and the TV changed channels by itself. The neighborhood had a gang that hung around under a highway bridge and my car had been vandalized three times. Something evil was definitely at work, but I don’t think a priest would have understood what to do with it. He would probably say it was all coincidence.

Advice of the saints is:

Number 1: say the name Jesus out loud. If it is not of God it will be banished by Jesus Name.
Also make the sign of the cross at it, and command it, “In.the Name of Jesus, I command you to say Jesus Name.” If it cannot say Jesus name, then it is not of God.
Sprinkle holy water at it (evil must leave immediately when.holy water is sprinkled, because Holy Water has exorcism prayers upon it.)
Also give commands in Jesus Name, eg: “In the Name of Jesus I command you to leave immediately if you are not of God.”

Pray the St Michael prayer over and over. If it is not of God it will be banished and be powerless as you pray.

Claim.the protection of the precious blood of Jesus on yourself.
Say or pray, “In the Name of Jesus I cover you with the Precious Blood of Jesus and say you are powerless and are banished from me in Jesus Name.”

Don’t believe the apparition, tell a holy priest during confession and believe their decision only.
Padre Pio said he could not believe anything of private revelation revealed to him, until he told a confessor who told him whether it was from God or not. Because: the Bible says, “Satan masquerades as an angel of light.”

So, tell a holy priest at your next chance and obey their commands.
 
Most powerful thing, just think or say Jesus Name.
Jesus Name means, God saves.

The apostles told Jesus, “We cast out demons by Your Name.”

Jesus Name banishes evil.

Go to Google and search for: “Fr Robert de Grandis Prayer of Deliverance/ spiritual warfare.” (this is a powerful prayer that people in the Deliverance ministry say every single day for protection from any spiritual evil.)
Say this prayer or at least the St Michael prayer everyday 🙂
