Hi, I have a date next week with a girl whom I have gone out with once before, although it would be a stretch to call it a real date though - it was coffee and then Bible study. Anyway, this time we’re going to have coffee, see a movie, and possibly something else, like ice cream or something, if time permits. The thing is that it’s on a weeknight, so I don’t know if I would be able to fit all those things into one evening. I was also thinking of getting her chocolates, but I don’t know if that would be overdoing it a bit, since it is only a second date, although she and I have known each other since June, but have seen each other only 3 times during that time, with sporadic emails thrown in. I really like this girl, so I don’t want to do anything that would scare her off, but I also don’t want to come off as boring or anything like that. I get the feeling that she wants me to take charge, so maybe the chocolates would help in that sense.

Anyway, I’m rambling. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Sounds like a great date idea to me! Chocolates are cool too - though not necessary. Sweet gesture just the same.

Have a wonderful time.

I hate that feeling too; where you don’t want to turn her away by going too slow and you don’t want to turn her away by going too fast. I have had problem before. Only you can know for sure what is too much/too far and what is too boring/too slow. Since you get the vibe that she wants to take charge, I’d personally go with the chocolates.

Perhaps be creative. Instead of getting a just a plain heart shape box of chocolates, see if you can find her favorite kind. If you don’t know her favorite kind that’s cool, just find one with a variety of chocolates, not just one kind. The idea is to be creative; to take a normally kind gesture and modify where it suits her better.

Yup, I always get my chocolates from this nice little chocolate shop here in town, and they come in a little wooden box gift-wrapped in a gift-bag tied with a little ribbon. I believe it’s an assortment of chocolates, but I’ll have to double-check if/when I go there this weekend.

The chocolate sounds good… but just a tiny box with a few pieces of good stuff… For the third date I would suggest a single flower like a carnation… white perhaps to signify purity in the relationship as your grow together.

Good Luck,

The date you have planned with this woman sounds nice. You should be able to get all that in without staying out horribly late. I think the chocolates sound nice. Certainly you don’t want to get her anything too big, but like the other poster said if you know her favoriite type of chocolates one piece of that would go a whole lot farther than a hundred pieces of some less favorite chocolate.

That sounds really nice. There are three things that will always win over a woman (on the superficial level - the rest you have to do on your own 👍 ) flowers, chocolate, shiny stuff. Obviously too new for shiny stuff. Flowers are very romantic but much nicer when you get into the part of relationship when someone cares enough to dry and keep the petals. Chocolates are great for the beginning. You sound like a really nice guy who is trying very hard to the right thing for this girl so the biggest thing you can do is just that … So the next right thing.😃

There are too many dirtbags in this world that do not respect women. If you are not one of them. You already got an extra ten points for showing up at the door.

God bless,

You know what SomeCatholic Guy? I have read your posts about your dating questions, etc…and I must say, you are very much a gentleman.:hmmm: I think the chocolates are a great gesture. I was also going to say to have a date soon that involves participation in something…like roller skating or ice skating…or maybe walk through a museum. Be creative.

Good luck–things seem to be going well.🙂

I wouldn’t go to see a movie. I think the main reason for going out on a date is to get to know someone better. 🙂

You should definitely talk about family. That’s usually a nice and subtle subject. :o

I’d just feel like I’m in Heaven if any guy were to give me chocolate! Dark chocolate is bomb! 😃

The flower idea is nice. :o

Thank you all for your (name removed by moderator)ut so far!

Yup, I definitely see what you’re saying. Part of the reason why we’re going to see the movie is because she mentioned that she wanted to see that movie last time, so I brought it up, and she still wanted to see it.

I do really want to have more time to just talk to her, as we didn’t have too much time to do that last time. Coffee was 20 minutes or so plus another 20 minutes or so in the car. This time, she and I will have a chance to talk over coffee before the movie, and more time to talk over ice cream after the movie. So the movie will essentially be an interlude to talking.

Yea, she and I already had a pretty extensive discussion about her and my families last time. Can’t hurt to talk more about it, though, I’m sure!

You’re good. 😉

I just hope you will let us all know how it went on Monday instead of keeping us all in suspense and then letting us hang. 😛

What do you do with your friends and family for fun and/or exercise?

Do you. . . .
. . . take a walk in the woods to see the fall foliage?
. . . play monopoly?
. . . clean the yard?
. . . go to the mall?
. . . walk the dog?

Whatever that is do that with her.

If she mentioned the movie, then it’s great you are seeing it with her! Planning time to talk before and after is a great idea! You will have great opportunities to do other things on future dates.

Date ideas: I’m an outdoorsy type, so I personally liked visiting parks or lakes where we could hike and stuff (ride bikes, canoe). That led to me wanting to walk along when he played golf, which got me interested in golf. PP mentioned roller skating and ice skating - very cool ideas even if you aren’t “gifted” in those areas (the fun & laughter are totally endearing). Find out what she does with her other friends, or what things she’s interested in but hasn’t had a friend willing to learn or try it with her.

Will she have a place to keep the flower and chocolates while on the date? Those are such sweet ideas, and running with her movie thought also shows you taking charge. So do what feels right.

Considering your attitude and mindset, I’d say you can’t go wrong with being yourself!! 🙂 Lots of great ideas and perspectives offered here too.

Edited to add: As my DH got to know me, he found that neat leaves & pinecones were more dear to me than flowers. It really touched me when he first starting giving me the occasional unique one he found. So it’s always neat if you watch what little insignificant things bring her joy or amusement, and then do something that shows you noticed.

Have to agree with a PP who said flowers, chocolates, and shiny stuff are always good. 🙂

If you’re worried about overwhelming her, go with a small box of chocolates. Something that says “I was thinking of you,” KWIM?

Personally, I bet she’ll be thrilled. Your post reminds me of the things DH did when we were dating. He’s a very old-school romantic kind of guy.

Have fun on your date. We’d love to hear how it went. 🙂

In my experiences you can’t go wrong with opening the door for her, whether it be to the car, the restaurant etc. If she doesn’t like and she says something then no harm was done, but if she thought you should’ve done it and you didn’t that might not go over well.

Good luck on your date. Say a prayer to St. Raphael the Archangel, he’s the patron saint of singles.

Don’t overdo it. Chocolates and flowers is too much. Unless it is a need of heart which tells you to do it, in which case you probably should - this is only my opinion based on a gut feeling. I just know I would do it, since you live only once.

But do not try to buy love, no matter what you do.

As for holding the door, giving her the seat or the first go at pleasant things or anything else of this kind, you need to do this even if she’s your enemy. This is not just something you do to a woman you fancy. This is something you do to any woman.

Hi joandarc2008! It’s actually tomorrow. I called her and left a message last night, so hopefully she’ll get back to me today. At any rate, I’ll try to keep you guys updated.

A weeknight date 👍 That’s a great way to keep it low key for a while. Good luck.

God bless,
