Until it adopted the New English Version, the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod used the NKJV as its “pew Bible.” Many years ago when I was President and Chairman of the Board of a Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod congregation I asked the Pastor why this was, since there were much better translations available. He said it was for financial reasons related to copyright issues which the other translations had but the NKJV did not. Perhaps this may be part of why the Greek Orthodox Church uses the NKJV?

Personally, that Pastor studied directly from the Masoretic Hebrew O.T. and Koine Greek N.T. with the help of an interlinear (Greek and direct English translation) N.T. and an interlinear (Hebrew and English) N.T.

Blessings,
Irl
Hello Iri,

Ever hear of Robert Hall? Lutheran Scholar. He was a consultant on the original 1953, ‘Martin Luther’ movie and the 2002 movie ‘Luther,’ He 's also has a bit he does on the 1953, 50th Anniversary edition DVD, of the Movie? I did Bible studies with him for yrs. before I knew who he actualy was.

God bless,
John :highprayer:

Why Thank you, very Informative and it makes sense! I can see the Lutherans doing that, and also amid the 1995, copyright date on the OSB, that they don’t see using that translation as a Big deal anymore. Times do change.

God bless,

I suggest you give it back to your daughter, after all it was given to her, not you!
Some are acting as if it were a book to worship satan. We can and do worship God with our Bible just as you can worship with your Bible.
havent seen anyone here acting as if the kjv is a book to worship satan. where did you derive this? 🤷 on the contrary, those of us who do not use it for study, have actually praised it for its use of the english language, and poetic value etc. also are you saying since we have the 7 books we have a different bible?ths, and God bless you and yours.

My first complete read of the Bible was the original KJV wich includes the Appocrypha. I burnt it! This book appears to be English but is not. It is demonic. In its time it may have been the most accurate(Douay aside) but today it is the most blatant weapon of Satan towards the Idolatry of book worship.

Just talk to a KJV Guy. If thats not the Pagan virtue in literature worship I don’t know what is.

If you do not believe it to be the absolute inerrant word of the Almighty then you can not in good conscience give it to anybody. If they specifically tell you that they do not and can not accept a book as the word of God (false Yeshua). Then hand it over and Know you have spoken with a fellow Saint.
and this my friend is the opposite extreme of the kjv only belief:rolleyes:

I agree, crazzeto. So many Evanelical laymen who have memorized much of the Bible, will quote a text (KJV version, of course) but when I ask them what, exactly, that text means, simply repeat the memorized text and say: That is what it means: The plain words of the Bible mean what they say, period; nothing less, nothing more. Sadly they haven’t a clue as to what the text means; so their memorization has accomplished nothing.

Blessings,
Irl
i wonder how many text, they have memorized out of say… 1rst chronicles?😃

The KJV hasn’t been revised as much as the Douay Rhiems? there was a Verion of the KJV called the evil Bible because of all the misplaced word and, miss spellings, and typos.
it tok til 1789 Cambridge edition to get the one they use today, and then not until the NKJV has the KJV finally had most the most needed corrections.

NIV is the worst it was translated in that it used the English words as acceptable for all english speaking countries which means it sacrificed meaning for an more acceptable word, i.e. it is watered down. They make a descent Study Bible with good commentary, but I don’t use it for biblical verse references.

I do use a NRSV 'Annotated Study Bible, with apocrypha, Oxford, Univ. Press when attending Bible studies of other faiths, (I also carry around about forty to fifty pounds of other bibles and reference books)
They’ll accept it,w hen I’m reading allowed from it, But I like to use the RSV for quoting, but ya just can’t get a good RSV study Bible these days. Harper Collins also makes a good NRSV study Bible. But today’s favorite? Oxford Univ. Press: ‘The Catholic Study Bible’ (NAB) second edition, 2005, and i also now carry a catechism of the Catholic Church, I find the two go hand in hand for biblical insight.

God Bless,
John :highprayer:
Better check the facts, the Douay Rheims Bible has been revised more times than the King James Version. And why does the Catechism of the Roman Catholic church have to be larger than the Bible itself? Seems very much inappropriate and illogical.

Remind you one of those who move from house to house, peppering you with verse after Biblical verses that seems like it never ends and in one breath. You would think either they are really good or simply rehearsing what their pastors had drilled into them before they start their mission.

Having said that, there are many Protestants who are really knowledgeable in Biblical knowledge, and funny though, these genuine ones don’t seem to flaunt their knowledge unnecessarily.

Sometimes one can convince with comprehensive Biblical knowledge rather than to quote verses with narrow Biblical context, out of context or taking them in isolation.

Hello I bet your Church uses the same liturgy we’ve been using since the early 70’s developed by the Catholic Church over a ten yr. period to get back to the liturgical Mass of the early Church. So why knock us now?

Is the Catechism Larger than the Bible itself? IMaybe you need to get a bigger Bible, get rid of that pocket version you’ve been carrying around, @53 yrs of age I can 't read them without a set of 2.5 mag cheeters!

Or put back the 7 books you took out? I got several different types of CCC’s none are as big as my Bibles even the Protestant versions!

Do you ever see the "interpreters Bible?’ 12 volumes, KJV? RSV side by side,
Exegesis, and exposition on every verse of the Bible, Abingdon Press, early 1960’s??? That would be about 11.5 times bigger than any Catechism.

alibris.com/search/books/qwork/8498166/used/The%20Interpreter’s%20Bible%20-%20General%20Articles%20Genesis%20Exodus%20Volume%201

A New interpreters Bible 12 vol set will set you back some $ 795.00, Why is it the Protestants get to define their teachings, writing and selling Books? And when the Catholic Church finally puts in print a Comprehensive book on its teachings you want to criticize its size?? C’mon :pshaw:

Absolutely. If it’s not a Catholic Bible at the very least it’s probably is missing several books of scripture. Anytime someone quotes to me from a Protestant Bible I cross reference with a Catholic one. I find that sometimes there are subtle changes that change the meaning. Not always to be sure but I have found a few. Case in point 2nd Peter;

NIV
19And we have the word of the prophets made more certain, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. 20Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation.
Douay-Rheims
19 And we have the more firm prophetical word: whereunto you do well to attend, as to a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: 20 Understanding this first, that no prophecy of scripture is made by private interpretation.
In my opinion, the way the NIV phrases verse 20 completely changes its meaning, and interpretation.
KJV
19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:
20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.
I think KJV is right on with the Douay-Rheims.

I own 2 CCC’s and 4 Catholic bibles ranging from a small easy to cary version of the 1609 Douay to a much larger “large print” family version of the Douay (and a couple NAB’s). The CCC is not larger than any version of the bible that I own. So assertion shot down. But that said:

Why is it you feel that the piles of documentation that explore, draw out and more richly explain the vast sum of the full deposit of faith should not be “bigger than the bible”. Of course the CCC it’s self is not this in and of it’s self, throw in the writings of the Saints, Successors to Peter (legitimate), Bishops, priests etc and you have one very big library of faith which most certainly out weighs the bible. And you think this is a bad thing? How? Christ and his Apostles didn’t establish and grow a book you know.

KJV
19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:
20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.

Yes, almost identical in this case anyway.

I’lll be honest, I haven’t run into anything the KJV that makes it seem explicitly “protestant leaning”, at least not the online PDF versions I’ve downloaded. That said, I’m still happier having a Douay bible.

Just keep it at home somewhere as it may be misused by a misguided fundamentalist.

Actually, no. the Anglo-Lutheran Catholic Church (ALCC) is a Church which is an offshoot of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (and shares some Anglican heritage) but has come to accept the Roman Catholic Faith entirely, and has filed a formal petition to enter the Roman Catholic Church in whichever form the Pope and Curia feels most appropriate. Its polity is Roman Catholic, it has obtained the Vatican Apostolic Succession through a Brazilian Archbishop.
The ALCC accepts both Papal primacy and Papal infallibility, is Marian, teaches from the Catholic Catechism only and catechizes using Catholic RCIA material only!

You can read about the Anglo-Lutheran Catholic Church on Wikipedia (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anglo-Lutheran_Catholic_Church) Its national website is www.anglolutherancatholic.org. Diocesan websites are at orgsites.com/pa/rac/_pgg1.php3 , and ecclnet.org. A parish website is at stmichaelsalcc.org .

Please pray for the reunion of the Church.

Blessings,

Hey Iri,
Welcome aboard, The Missouri Synod may not be far behind, There have been several agreements on Theology, between the Lutheran Church and the Roman Catholic, i.e. ‘Salvation’ in 1999,
God Bless,

Hi,
If you mean Eastern Orthodox, I have A Greek Orthodox, Study Bible, OSB, Nelson Pub, the New Testament, is their own English translation from the NKJV and the Septuagint, however, the Old Testament is in the nKJV, I asked the deacon @ a the Local Orthodox Church why KJV? he shrugged his shoulders and was at a loss for an answer.

The commentary on the New Testament is addition to my library i appreciate greatly.

God bless,
John
This is not a Greek Orthodox Study Bible. It is labeled "“The Orthodox Study Bible” It had various contributors mainly from St. Athanasius Academy but also many Other Orthodox Bishops of all flavors from Greek to Antiochian. Kallistos Ware is probably the most widely known Orthodox bishop with his hand in the pot. This IS NOT just the New Testament, it is the complete Bible with the inclusion of 3 Maccabees and 151 psalms, plus separates the Epistle of Jeremiah out of Baruch. Copyright 2008

Can you explain how God revealed to you that it was “demonic”? By what norm are you holding this up? Is it because of the dated language? What makes that version “demonic?” I have heard mostly Baptists who say that Satan gave the NIV to the church, but this is the first time ever that I have heard the KJV being declared demonic. Those who say the NIV has satanic influence have yet to explain that statement either.

I think this line is most telling in agent grey’s post:
“Just talk to a KJV Guy. If thats not the Pagan virtue in literature worship I don’t know what is.” It sounds to me as if he is saying that whoever is reading the KJV is doing so out of “literature worship.” I do hope that this will be cleared up in a future post.
Now I have heard the argument that “we should read the KJV because we should honor God with the Best we have to offer and the King James English is the most proper English we have.” The problem I have with that is we do not speak that way so it becomes as a clanging symbol to some rather than a known language. I would far rather communicate in language that people understand today. Oh yes I learned great passages from the KJV and you go to a funeral and you say the 23rd Psalm out of the KJV. Those old habits will die hard.

Burn it.“32 Q. What should a Christian do who has been given a Bible by a Protestant or by an agent of the Protestants? A. A Christian to whom a Bible has been offered by a Protestant or an agent of the Protestants should reject it with disgust, because it is forbidden by the Church. If it was accepted by inadvertence, it must be burnt as soon as possible or handed in to the Parish Priest.” Catechism of S. Pio X.

It matters not to me what the Catechism of St Pius X says on that matter, what does the actual Catechism teach? I have found no paragraphs in my version nor in the online version that cross references what version a Catholic should use. I realize that it may still be popular to use the Pius X catechism (originally Published in 1908) as a teaching tool because of its simplicity, but I have yet to find what you post in the regular catechism of the Catholic Church.

When I was in seminary I was taught a valuable lesson on this matter of which translation is correct. The instructor started a debate over which was the right one to use. The class quickly chose sides over the KJV and other versions with each side giving their views on the matter and getting madder by the minute feeling the other was ignoring their side of the argument. Little did we notice there were several Korean students who were not participating at all but were watching us all debate this like you would watch a tennis match. Finally the instructor stopped us and asked the Koreans “Why are you not even putting forth an argument.” One spoke up and put us all to silence when he said, “You all do not know how lucky you are to have all the translations you do. Bibles are so rare in our country we figure whatever version comes into the church the day we hold service is whatever the Holy Spirit wants us to hear from.” I will NEVER, look upon the King James only argument the same way again as it opened my eyes that **it does not matter what translation it is so long as it brings the person closer to God. **
