I’m sure many an Apologist have many books from many sources that do not agree with our faith. One must understand what it is that you are fighting against in order to truly defend oneself and others from that threat. Or, for that fact, to be able to embrace those that we perceive as a threat and lead them to the light.

There is a real divergence of opinions and thoughts here. Maybe it isn’t so important as to what all the good people of CA Forum think – maybe what is truly important is what God is telling the original poster to do.
I can support freedom of speech and freedom of press and I can not want something to be part of my home and part of my life. A number of the books I gave away probably had a lot of truth to them. I did not want to have to be so very careful in screening and evaluating what I was reading (i.e., this conforms with Catholic teaching, and this doesn’t).
The next question is whether I am supporting or condoning or encouraging evil by giving away a book I no longer believe and/or a book that represents something I now consider wrong. I think most of us here posting are lay people.
What would a priest say in answer to this sort of question? Is this the sin of being an accessory to another person’s sin? Where is that line drawn? It’s okay if it is a book for a Protestant church or Unity church but it’s not okay if it is … fill in the blank (pornographic material or occult material or whatever)?

Truthfully, I did throw them out. I did as 3 dog night said I considered them occult material or at the least promoting a historically anti Catholic organization. That said I feel better that they are gone.

If you’re hung up on burning them or throwing them away, I like the idea of taking them to a library. They might take them.
Sometimes though, the simplest solution works the best; don’t want’em? Through them in the trash.

I recently bought a very anti-Catholic book at a thrift store so I could get it off the shelf before someone else bought it. I don’t feel right about burning books so I put it in the recycling bin.

I remember when I was a kid seeing hundreds of Playboy magazines in a bin at the recycling depot that could have been and probably were just picked up by someone. If you truly want something gone it needs to be burned or buried.

Would tossing them out with the trash be a good substitute for burying? If you bury them in your yard, you will end up with trash in your yard. They won’t decompose. Maybe if you shred them first. Even better would be to find a waste paper recycling program in your area. Ours has a municipal run program. It’s free, takes books by the ton, and then they go to a recycler.

I’ve read the Koran too, and many books about Freemasonry - how else can we learn about the world and other cultures if we don’t read? Done with a book? Give it to someone, or donate it.

Yes, God forbid anyone learns anything! The OP probably meant books ABOUT Freemasonry.
If you have so much hatred in your heart about something about which you know nothing, how about reading up on it so at least your opinion will be an informed one. That way you can dislike Freemasonry in an intelligent way, not just as a result of hearing about it from others.

100% agree!! I’m willing to bet that most of the people who have posted in this thread know next to nothing about Freemasonry.
Educating yourself (generally speaking) about other organizations/religions is a good thing. Then, one can inform an intelligent opinion and disagree/debate.

It seems like there are quite a lot of people that hate or are afraid of Freemasons. Not knowing about something and condemning it seems wrong. Yes, in the Catholic Church I understand, but for other religions that is their choice.
From what I know and gathered they seem to be fine people. (Just not to us practicing Catholics!) These people seem to do good work in the communities and have morals. I doubt that reading any of the books will make me a bad person or want to take over the world.

Our Catholic school has a paper truck and we would love to take them off your hands and will recycle them for you. We take old books every week.

My Grandfather was a Freemason, an Elder in his Church, and a fine, honorable gentleman that served in WWII, would give you the shirt off his back if you really needed it - but would also ask you to stand-up and take responsibility for your own life and actions. He never told me much about the FM; however, when the Boy Scout troop I was in, sponsored by the local Catholic Church, didn’t receive the funds to go to the BS Jamboree… somehow, money was found, a driver volunteered, kids without sleeping bags and tents had them… and all the people that brought these things were members of GP’s Church and men I had seen coming and going from the FM-Hall (had to sit in the car sometimes when GP went in to fetch something). Now I don’t know of all the reasons FM and the CC are at odds and frankly the details don’t matter to me, Church says no, that’s enough. However, I have learned enough of the details to understand why, and that took talking to people involved with FM and reading books.

No hatred here. BUT my mind and my heart and body are filled with Truth and Love and I know Jesus and that He is all we need. So why clutter with untruth? Being a “good man” has nothing to do with it. The road ot hell is wide and varied; the narrow road is better. I will not pass on or protect what is not Truth…Or give it house room. I mean OP!
