What To Do With Old DVD's? (Not exactly the christian type)

I have a moral Dilemma…

I have like 10 dvd’s that I want to get rid of because I don’t feel comfortable watching them anymore, like the American Pie set, Team America, Nip/Tuck, that kind of stuff… Now my question is, since they are inappropriate should I throw them out, sell them to a pawn shop and give the money to the church, or what?

If I sold them I would be letting someone else watch this potentially causing them to sin, but if they are going to buy it then they must not think there is a prolem with it and they would probably purchase it through some other outlet anyway…

I don’t feel good about just throwing them out because I spent A LOT of money on them (1st season of nip/tuck costed $60-$70 alone), and if I sold them I wouldn’t be keeping the money for myself. But then we go back in this cycle of whether or not I should pass it on to someone else.

I’m not sure what to do in this situation, would anyone care to give a suggestion?

If you feel that they are inappropriate period, that is for anybody to watch, then put them one by one in the microwave for about 5 seconds each. This will render them useless. Then toss them.

Then, next time you are tempted to spend money on such, remember how rotten you felt having to destroy and toss something you spent good money on. That should help you “not go there” again.

And if the temptation stays with you, think about the better, more purposeful ways you could spend the money. And if thinking doesn’t do it, actually spend the money on something good, and it won’t be there burning a hole in your pocket tempting you to buy DVD’s in poor taste.

You could donate it to a charity, give it to the church, buy good books or DVD’s that you could pass on to others when you are finished (or donate to the library). Etc. etc.

good luck,

cheddar

You could give them to me 😛

If they are OK for some people but for you, then you could give them to someone it would be OK for. For example, if it would cause men temptations but not women, you could give them to a woman (like if it has naked women but not naked men) Or if it would cause young people temptations but not 80 year old people temptations, you could give them to an 80 year old person. Or if it has bad ideas that could corrupt a mind (versus just sexual temptations), then you could give them to someone whose mind would not be corrupted by that (but such a person may not have any interest in them).

Or you could sell/give them to an organization that reviews DVDs I suppose. You could give them to the USCCB movie reivew people maybe.

Or what you could do is toast them … I’m not sure if microwaving them is safe … and then use them for decorative purposes. Maybe you could even make something out of them like put a statue of Jesus or a cruciform Jesus (like a crucifix) on top of it to symbolize Jesus’ victory or to symbolize your placing everything at his feet or naling your sins to the wood of the Cross. You could do that with a statue of Mary or with a special patron saint or maybe you could do that with a statue of an angel that you could christen (in your mind and you could get it blessed too) as your guardian angel who looks after the safety of your soul.

I’ve only seen part of the examples you listed. I thought Team America was a puppet movie? Regardless… my two cents.

Team America was rated morally offensive by the USCCB office for film and broadcasting.

Toss them if they are morally offensive (and from the list you have presented it sounds like they are). Like someone else said, it may help you think twice next time before wasting money on something.

If there was a movie going around that was offensive/disrespectful to your family, would you resell it, since some people might have bought it anyway? Or would you toss it?

If you don’t want junk going around that offends your family, you shouldn’t want junk going around that offends God.
Think of it this way, is it really worth it to offend God for $70, $200, or whatever you would make off of them? (And you even said you aren’t thinking of keeping the money, plus don’t get me wrong, I don’t think there is any amount of money that hurting God would be worth, but anyways)

My understanding is that watching such movies were only morally wrong if you knew you were susceptible to the temptations therein. Also, that once they’re made, they’re done, and a plastic disc can’t offend God, and even watching them aren’t inherently sinful.

So it might be wrong for some people to watch some things or listen to some music, but not for others. See “Bad Music” by Jimmy Akin to read more about what I mean; he uses music with explicit lyrics as an example.

I can understand how there’s a risk when selling them and not knowing whose hands they’ll fall into (such as is the case, if you sell them to a pawn shop).

However if there is a friend of yours (or several) who are the upstanding type, and not the types to be tempted by certain materials, it wouldn’t be wrong for them to view them. But… how do you ask a friend about that?

You: “Hey, are you okay with American Pie, seeing as it has the possibility to tempt some people beyond what they’re able to control?”

Friend: “?”

Heh heh… I’d just toss them or make a craft project out of them since it’s easier 😉

I LOVE easy questions: open trash can lid; deposit bawdy DVDs; close trash can lid. Do a little victory dance around trash can to confirm for neighbors you ARE one of those wacky Catholics who are happy practising their faith. Then offer up the sacrifice of the $ you spent and now have thrown away to God who will enrich you in far greater measure than fully utilizing the DVDs ever could.

All you need to fix anything is Duct tape, WD-40, and some used DVD’s.

Use them as coasters!

Ever gone trap shooting? Use DVD’s!

Display for your children what firecrackers can do to them by “experimenting” on a DVD!

Use them in place of paper…write notes and give them to your family.

Play “hide the DVD” and whoever finds it first or finds a certain number, pay them in cookies, time on the computer, nickels, etc.

Use them as poker chips.

Ultimate DVD frisbee!

Into dog training? If your border collie can catch a DVD a plastic frisbee will be nothing!

The list goes on…

It’s an easy question, but not an easy solution. Destroy them - Period. The problem is that there are hordes of people out there who will buy movies like that, but you don’t have to BE part of that problem. Don’t contribute to the lusts of this fallen world.

Take the monetary loss as a reminder of the fact that you could have paid a much higher price in the long run. By the way, I had the exact same problem as you and I threw the DVDs out, too, so this isn’t one of those, “Don’t practice what you preach” deals. I’ve been there and trust me, you’re better off just ditching them. 👍

My husband rented this movie for our 13,12, and 10 year olds to watch. He, too, thought because it was a Puppet movie it would be harmless.

Oh…my…gosh…:bigyikes:

Don’t ever rent this movie.

A great opportunity to ask parents: Please check the ratings first!

I see it happen so often; parents don’t check the ratings and complain when their kids get scandalized (I’m not saying you guys do that, Catholic 90). But yea, always check the ratings! 👍

I did this with music CD’s. I loved hard rock, and ripping it off the internet, before I received the Lord’s wake up call. Throwing them away was liberating.

Like many evils, I sometimes yearn for the those old seductive rhythms. But my rejection is still firm. Affirm your faith. Trash them.

My DH looked at the box, saw “R”, but assumed the “R” was for violence or a little racy language. (We are okay with limited racy language in our house and cartoon violence).

We weren’t “scandalized” by the movie, but we did shut it off when a scene with the puppets getting “intimate” appeared. After the kids were in bed, we finished it just to see how much worse it got. The language was quite bad, even for our standards, but my DH did think it was quite funny. Somehow, the humor got lost on me, but then again I wasn’t thinking like a juvenile male either (he sometimes gets in these moods where farting and other bodily noises greatly amuse him…)

I always laugh at a fart, and I can’t explain why, it’s just always funny to me…

Anyways… Iwas up yesterday ready to cry as I was snapping $400-$500 worth of dvd’s last night. It was horrible, all that money. Although I acualluy felt good when snapping the Americn Pie DVD’s.
I can’t get rid of my Kill Bill DVD’s, I just can’t. And I really don’t think they are an occasion for me to sin anyways.

That “intimate” scene in Team America had me laughing so hard when I first seen it, but now I would do nothing but squirn and want to turn it off. Funny hey?

Maybe this will help:
Kill Bill 1
Kill Bill 2

That will not help me get rid of Kill Bill, it doesn’t cause me to sin, and although others don’t enjoy it, I do. It’s not full of sex, or anything that would lead me to sin, and it’s so out there that not many people are going to take life lessons from it. It may be twisted but there is so much more to the movie than the violence that I enjoy.

So it’s staying up in my shelf where it is going to stay.

I have a problem with this too…I have many horror movies like Child’s Play, Dario Argento films, Zombie movies, Invasion of body snatchers with donald sutherland (rated O, which I cannot believe). Even the good bad and ugly, my favorite western from the sixties that I have seen tons of times, I just found out is rated O. I have tons of DVDs and just don’t want to destroy them. I haven’t watched an O movie since last year since my confessor said not to watch (I think he overreacted and realized it)…anyway, Child’s Play??? good bad and ugly??? I am afraid to check my other favorites like Crying Game, Malena. I don’t even want to check that USCB website; I am scrupulous and don’t know what to do with all these DVDs. I want to watch them - also, Halloween is O, and also the Omen (I didn’t even open that yet because I found out it is O and I have seen it tons of times - I should not have checked the website). What do you all think?
