What to say about the Inquisition and the crusades?

How deep these misconceptions are hit me Tuesday in the hospital. Didn’t specify a faith in the ER and was visited by a volunteer on the chaplain’s staff. Said I was raised a very a liberal Protestant but am moving toward Catholicism. He asked why. I mentioned Church history and Papal encyclicals. He said the history wasn’t that good and he liked to “think for himself” (this after I had told him I was raised a Unitarian.!) A surreal moment. Me, immobilized with tubes and pressure cuffs, taking to a sincere guy who meant well about the Crusades and how the Church saved Western Civilization.

Btw…got out last night. During OK now.

It seems like I encounter a similar question every few days now. Like I’ve said before, the correct answers depend on what he/you want to get from the conversation. If it is his intention only to “shed light” on your ignorance, then he will not be receptive to your argument, no matter how good. It is just as you will not be convinced by his, because you believe, you feel sorry for each other; each trying to show the other the error of their reasoning. If he is truly interested in learning about philosophy or discussing doctrine, you need to approach with finesse. If he is an atheist, that means he trusts no one’s judgement but his own. There are several things you could do, but do not make broad faith based arguments because he will only defend what his intellect is telling him. Offer evidence that allows him to draw his own conclusions, and then make him admit he’s at least agnostic. Then you have your foot in the door. Basically you are using his own tactic of doubt against him.

I agree with the previous responses…it’s a desperation tactic on their part.

Recently I debated a fundamentalist. When I pointed out his contradiction that he cannot openly boast about being an absolute bible literalist, yet completely discredict all the verses in the bible which deal with baptism and the Eucharist, only to dismiss them as being figurative.

He refused to answer my request, and immediately the subject changed to the Inquisitions, crusades, and the recent priest scandals.

99% of the time these attacks are from the extreme fundamentalist who are blatantly anti-Catholic.

…my response would be the same to the protestants that burned witches at the stake when this country was being settled…

…the same response i would give to those that tortured and killed catholics for their difference in faith again in the early history of the united states…

…LOVE THY NEIGHBOR!

plenty of guilt to go around… i don’t recommend casting any stones!

Here’s what I would say. Call them the Holy Inquisition and the Holy Crusades. These historic events are what saved Europe from complete destruction. Any half unbiased history book will at least get that point across, yet sadly those people who attack these great events seem to have a complete lack of will to read anything much worth reading.
Sorry, I only get hang out with biased people (that why I have so many questions) how would we be able to add the tag “Holy” to them and not be sent off to the loony ben? (I am not trying to be sarcastic, dispite how this proboly sounds, would you please tell me how I can say holy with it and properly defend it?) thanks and God bless.

I always try to remember that wonderful metaphor of Jesus: “I am the vine, you are the branches.”

Branches rot and die and fall away. The vine lives on. So it is with the Catholic Church. It is still the Body of Christ even though some of its limbs rot and perish. What happened in the Crusades and the Inquisition does not change the fact that Christ is the vine, the Church, and we are all branches living or dead … or spiritually dead wood.
