Recently I have noted that there seems to be a movement in our Church to change the type of unleavened bread used for the Holy Eucharist. As a matter of fact, I recently attended a presentation by my Pastor on the Eucharist and he was in favor of a change. He related a story to make his point. He said, he once asked an RCIA candidate if he believed in the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. The response was, “I have not problem in believing in the real presence. What I do have a problem with is believing that the host is bread!”
Looks like this movement is in favor of using something like the middle Eastern pita bread for the Host. In thinking about this, it occurred to me that Jesus would have followed the Jewish tradition and if so he definately would have used unleavened bread. But my research indicates that it would have been Matzo bread. Since Matzo was around at least several hundred years before Christ. My question is, why change at all? But if you do, for the sake of duplicating what Jesus used, why aren’t these people considering Matzo?
Respectively,
