What type of bread should be used for the Host?

Recently I have noted that there seems to be a movement in our Church to change the type of unleavened bread used for the Holy Eucharist. As a matter of fact, I recently attended a presentation by my Pastor on the Eucharist and he was in favor of a change. He related a story to make his point. He said, he once asked an RCIA candidate if he believed in the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. The response was, “I have not problem in believing in the real presence. What I do have a problem with is believing that the host is bread!”

Looks like this movement is in favor of using something like the middle Eastern pita bread for the Host. In thinking about this, it occurred to me that Jesus would have followed the Jewish tradition and if so he definately would have used unleavened bread. But my research indicates that it would have been Matzo bread. Since Matzo was around at least several hundred years before Christ. My question is, why change at all? But if you do, for the sake of duplicating what Jesus used, why aren’t these people considering Matzo?

Do you really want crumbs of Our Lord going all over the place.

The recipes used in the Latin Church today are used, first and foremost becuase they are 100% valid matter.

Secondly, and almost as importantly, is that there is very little danger of profanation resulting from spilled ‘crumbs’.

Each and every one of those would be the complete Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Christ.

In the Eastern Church, they use a completely Intincted mixture, so that any crumbs of their ‘Bread’ are retained in the Precious Blood and consumed afterward.

I really can’t see the Church effectively moving to using any type of crumbly bread in the Consecration without adopting the Eastern intinction as well. Either than, or a return to Communion in the mouth alone with a paten under the chin.

God alone knows why people feel the need to change something that needs no change. The Church has always used unleavened bread made of nothing more than wheat flour and water. There is no need to change this in favor of any particular ethnic group’s bread. Why can’t people leave well enough alone!

Brenda,

Please re-read my post! I am not in favor of any changes. It is simply what I am reading and hearing about others wanting to make changes. For some reason they like the pita bread idea and are pushing it. Pushing it very hard!!

To answer your comment regarding the crums. My Pastor addressed that in his recent talk. He felt that at the Last Supper there had to be crumds all over, so why should we bother. He critized those (Extra Ordinary) Eucharistic Ministers that stand at the Altar and shake all the crumbs into the one ciborium. He said there was NO need!!!

Please note the HE SAID and not me. I agree with you 100%.

Regards,

Matt

I think we need to remember that we are not receiving bread, we are receiving Christ, therefore, what the bread looks like, should have nothing to do on the presence of Christ, therefore, I don’t think there is a need to change the type of bread.

Mr. Pappa Matt,

I would like to suggest that you write the Bishop for your diocese concerning the comments made by your priest about our Lords body and blood scattering.

Even the idea of having our Lord Christs body and blood crumbling all over makes me shutter.

Dear brenda,

I beatyou to it! FYI, I have a long history or reporting such abuses to my Bishop. What I usually get is that I mis-understood what was said or that he 9 the Bishop) flat out does not believe that what I reported said was actually said. HOWEVER, this is 2005 and I am the proud owner of a very expensive digital video camera. I have the ability to convert the digital recordings to a DVD. No longer can anyone say “he said…she said” I just give them a copy of the DVD. Not only that, I have edited versions as well, where I splice in comments made by presenters on EWTN that contridict what is being said locally. Fr. Mitch, Fr. Benedict, and Fr. Pablo etc. Makes for real interesting viewing.

Please note I am not trying to blow my own horn, but to give others some ideas. I am sure others have gone away from a meeting or presentation doubting their own ears. Not me, I promised my Bishop with today’s technology, I never attend a presentation without recording it. If the presenter has a problem I ask them why they have a problem.

Good for you!

It’s people like you we need, to keep our Churches clean and pure.

Mr. Pappa Matt,

May also suggest that you send a copy of any DVDs showing abuses to the Vatican.

I remember reading some where on this site, that someone send a DVD to the Vatican and recieved very good results. Apparently the DVD made the rounds up at the Vatican and the abuses were corrected.

This technique works quite well!!! Good for you. Some in our group took all of the wackiness in our diocese, burned it onto a multi-media CD-rom and sent it to anyone in authority. The then Cardinal Ratzinger got word to us that this was the reason we got our new, wonderful bishop. He also said that anyone who had trouble in their diocese should do the same thing. He didn’t say the Pope specifically, but he said that everyone at the Vatican had seen it. We also have independent confirmation from the Congregation of Bishops that it was the most helpful thing they had ever received. They all receive letters of complaints all of the time. They have no idea from whom they are coming. When they see evidence in full color of things like clown masses, faulty teaching, etc. they don’t have to know from whom it came. It’s pretty irrefutable.

Oops. Sorry missed this. That was our group. It was a multi-media, point and click, CD-rom with video, audio, scanned in letters, news articles, etc. Our bishop was retiring soon and we got a wonderful, orthodox, replacement who is methodically righting the diocese.
