What was Mass about today?

I grilled my son at dinner(well not really )LOL Anyway, I asked him some questions based on what you guys told me and he simply stated that he wasnt listening UGG–Well, hopefully as he gets older he will want to pay more attention. Maybe he learned something through osmosis—

I just started attending Mass, and it’s still odd for me to realize that every other Catholic church is reading the same Scriptures each Sunday. Certainly gives you an odd sense of being connected to know that. Not to hijack the thread, I just wanted to comment on that. And for ALLFORHIM, the homily at my church was regarding tithing and supporting the church monetarily to what extent you can, and trusting that God will ensure that your needs are met one way or another.

We’ll perhaps your question will get your son to listen the next time. Teaching focus and attentiveness are good habits no matter where he goes.

As for my parish, the homily was about the 5 precepts of the church. We were told that in any relationship, you can do the minimum or you can go further. The readings were about those who went all the way in their relationship with God.

We can attend mass only when required or we can make the effort to go more often, even daily.

We can confess our sins just once a year but we can all use reconciliation more often.

We are all used to receiving communion each week but we are only require to once a year. We should hold off on communication if we have committed a mortal sin.

We can fast more often then required and dedicate the fast to our prayer intentions.

We have to help support or we can tithe supporting needs of the poor and the Church beyond the parish.

If you’re sick p’raps you can even watch the Mass on EWTN - they broadcast it online as well! They only have it four times a day Methinks there’s one due to start soon in fact.

What is even cooler is that the first reading (Old Testament) is always connected to the Gospel reading. (Sometimes it is hard to figure out) and this typology is right from the Church Fathers writings. (The Bishop that was in charge of making up the liturgical readings was extremely well versed in the writings of the Fathers)
In the three-year cycle, we cover over 500 passages from the old and new testaments, including the law, the prophets, the psalms, the Gospel, and the epistles. Covering all aspects of Salvation History, and the Life of Jesus.

Oh yeah, I forgot about online! For those who don’t have sattelite (sp?) or in my case have a bedroom TV on the fritz, online is great. I will go there for the evening broadcast. My LDS best friend watches Mass on EWTN sometimes and then calls me and asks me questions. Hmmmm, someday maybe that will win her over.

AllForHim, daily Mass is on EWTN too. It is a great way to observe without being observed.

Hi,

Thanks guys for responding so fast. I think you know Im not catholic and do not attend a CC. I simply just wanted to know what my son may have learned today. That’s all. No hidden agendas. I thought you could give me a starting point and you did—thank you.

I just figured I had a wealth of knowledge at my finger tips being on this forum.

Our homily today was about not being afraid to give freely - that we can trust God to take care of us, so we don’t need to hoard our possessions or our money. Both of the widows - the widow who cared for Elijah and the widow who gave her last mite to the Temple in the Gospel reading, trusted in God to help them after they had given away the very last that they had to live on.

This is very challenging to me, because I tend to be the kind of person that needs to be able to see where the next meal is coming from - I wouldn’t feel secure if I didn’t have money coming in from a regular source. For that reason, I have great admiration for the faith of those widows.

Hi All,

My son went to the CC with my in-laws today and when I asked him what he learned—Take a guess at what he said(he is 8) NOTHING!!

The Mass is not school, it is worship and sacrifice. But there were three readings, just as in every Sunday Mass.

I took my children to mass with me every Sunday. We sat in the cry room to avoid disrupting others during mass with my little one. My little ones would play at my feet during mass. They never paid any attention to what was going on. When my oldest was three years old I decided to teach him Our Lord’s prayer at bedtime. He insisted that he already knew it. I told him he did not because I had never taught it to him. Then he proceeded to say the prayer word perfect! He had learned it at mass on Sundays when I thought he wasn’t listening. Now I never trust a child who says they learned nothing at mass.

Next time why don’t you go over the readings with him beforehand and ask him if he was the priest, what would his homily be like for the day’s readings. Ask him to think about how the readings apply to his life. That might get him to pay more attention when he is in Mass.

I would say it is both, that is why there is the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist
The scriptures were written to be read during the Mass, and the homily was to explain the scriptures to the faithful.
At first the readings were read at the synagogues, and the breaking of the bread was in the homes, until Christians were kicked out of the synagogues, and then both were done in “house churches”

Our pastor delivered a wonderful and deep homily about how it is necessary to be prepared to give up even that which is dearest to you to follow Christ. The poor widow did this, even though her gift was small, it was all that she had to live on.
