What was the Mass like before Vatican II?

As I said in another thread, is anyone so naive as to think that there was ever a time in Church history when everyone agreed about everything that was part of the Church’s deposit? That there was a time when everyone went to confession and Mass every Sunday and Holy Day of Obligation? That everyone said their prayers, prayed the rosary and avoided sin and near occasions of sin?

And to carry it further, that every pre-Vatican II Mass was abuse free while every “NO” Mass was/is not? That every pre-Vatican II bishop, priest and religious was upright and devout and that now they aren’t? People tend to paint with a very broad brush. I suggest that the times we live in now are certainly no worse than any other time in the Church’s history and that history has shown some very terrible times. Christ suffered for the Church; do you think the Church shouldn’t suffer, too???

When I was growing up (in the 1930’s) the Mass was called “the Mass”; it was not called the TLM.

I know that some people like to think of going to Mass pre-V2 and hearing the Gregorian Chant and all this reverence and mystery. It has almost become a fantasy.

I remember no Gregorian Chants, the reverence was no more than it is now at a properly celebrated Pauline Mass. If you watch the Daily Mass on EWTN you will see what I mean. That is a Pauline Mass and it is so beautiful and reverent with beautiful music.

But churches in my youth had bad choirs and good choirs, exactly like today. And, some Priests rushed through the Mass just to get it over, exactly as some Priests do to this day.

The Priest faced away from the people and said the prayers in Latin but we followed in our Missal and I’ll bet, 90% of the people read the prayers in English.

Women did wear head coverings and I always have, and still do.

And we did receive Holy Communion from the hands of a Priest while kneeling at an altar rail. But there is a church just around the block from my parish church that still does it that way. They have one TLM Mass on Sunday but the rest of the time the Pauline Mass is celebrated. But Holy Communion is always received at the altar rail while kneeling.

I have not noticed if anyone receives in the hand, though I would think most people receive on the tongue. I can’t even imagine taking the Host in my hand.

Altar servers were always male, generally young boys, and I wish they still were all male.

I make it a point when attending Mass to sit on the side of the church where I know the Priest distributes Holy Communion. I do not want to receive the Holy Eucarist from the hands of a lay person (male or female).

So, I think of myself as a "traditional Catholic who does not object to the Pauline Mass. Have you seen a Mass celebrated by Pope Benedict. It is still the Pauline Mass but it is beautiful (of course they have the benefit of an excellent choir).

I suffered no great trauma when the Mass changed and the Priest turned around and I don’t understand why some people did.

That is how it was (at least it was my experience).:highprayer:

Face the facts. The majority of NO Masses, are not done the same way that Pope Benedict XVI or EWTN carries them out. And the majority of priests and Bishops have yet to promote the reform of the reform in the Western Church. It will take a decade if not more if ever to see the fruits of Pope Benedict’s call for liturgical changes. To much politics and lack of interest. Look at the SSPX debacle. It is all because they want to promote the traditions to the modern day Catholic church. And it is those very traditions that the majority of current clerics and those liberal laity who actually have a say don’t want. The Williamson affair was just another weapon they can use to do completely away with the past traditions of the Catholic church. One reason I feel the new Patriarch of Moscow will not meet with Benedict XVI. He sees the battle now taking place with the Pope and his flock. He wants no part of it!. But I feel he does stand for the cause of the traditional Catholics. I am starting to really believe that the Pope is loosing the power that the previous Popes once had. Today it’s all about what the people want. The people with power and influence I mean!. And right now it’s the liberals and progressivists in the church.

At the last RCIA meeting I asked about the traditional Mass and the views of Pope Benedict and was given very short shrift. According to my priest, Pope Benedict is too old and as a result his thinking is confused…not exactly the response I was expecting…

**** Thank you Mullenpm for your excellent reply. I too,so agree with you. I loved our old time Masses,I was brought up in the forties, and we had classes for the changes of Vitican II,which were some good and some not so good. This is how it was for me before Vitican II. I still too, receive The Eucharist only from a priest, and by no means will receive it on my hand,as it is just to precious to touch, this is our Lord. I would love to attend a Mass again where people still kneel to Our Lord in reverance and with so much respect. No one would dare even talk at all,in our time, with so much silence at church to concentrate on God for that very hour,or moment, when you could pray in silence without people talking and laughing, and carrying on. Even at Communion, people now-a-days march, stump down to recieve,no respect,as I see it.Not as it is now.Our way of dress was with dresses, and no short sleeves, and no low cut dresses,or mini skirts. We would be sent home,by the priest. The priest would stop his sermon if anyone was even whispering, and would just look at this person till they stopped! I loved the old Traditional Catholic Chruch, which I will die with. I learned that there is a Catholic Chruch here in Arizona that does just as yours does Mullenpm, with the covering of our heads,no pants and only dresses. Kneeling for Holy Communion. I am going to find out where it’s at,so I too,can attend and appreciate in our old time religion! I love it! Thank for you taking the time,as I am so thrilled to know I am not the only one that feels as you do. A New Beginning especially now that we are into another “Lent”, I can now go back to my old good Church. The old traditional church will most likely die with us.Thank you all,and this is a great discussion. I appreciate you all, young and old. Madelena

What I most remember about the pre- V2 Mass is the silence.

In todays church there is no time to be still and know that I am God. And in a world that seethes with racket and noise and talking and beeping and ringtones – we NEED to bring back the idea of silence and teach everyone, even children, to understand the value of quiet time to listen for the voice of God. Today even at Mass the assumption is that it is IMPOSSIBLE for ANYBODY to be quiet at ANY time for ANY reason. Every second of every minute needs to be filled with NOISE.

I remember my mother saying that church was the only time in her life when she could sit still and concentrate on the Mary things of life…today they never give us a minute to meditate.

So have you been to every Church in the world to determine that it is “IMPOSSIBLE for ANYBODY to be quiet at ANY time for ANY reason?” I invite you to attend Mass with me because before, during and after Mass you can hear a pin drop.

And what does it mean to *“be still and know that I am God?” *

You are being pedantic – OF COURSE nobody has been to every church in th world for every Mass, even the Pope. I have, however, during my 61 years of life, been to a wide representative group of churches world-wide and I think my response is adequate based on that information. My current congregation (St. Vincent de Paul Oratory) is also very quiet which is one reason I chose it. There are almost no children in that parish and the Mass is Sung English Mass but a good deal of it is in Latin, which means it attracts an older crowd. The past five congregations I have attended here in Toronto have been almost Protestant in their folksy, talkative, rackety Masses.

And if you do not know what it is to be still and know then prhaps no matter how quiet your church is, you must be thinking of something else or occupied besides listening for God to speak.

Although the atmosphere in the Church where I attend daily Mass is relatively quiet and reverent before and after Mass, I sure know what you mean, Appleby. More or less open conversation before and after Mass is very common. And the NO/OF Mass itself really doesn’t have much silence in it. A terrible loss.

IMHO, this is part of the basic reason for Summorum Pontificum: show 'em how it can be done (even if they have temper tantrums about it). 😉

Traditional Latin Mass: Translation and Grammar

I wish that everyone would just step back and stop talking. This thread has become increasingly nasty; and, the surprising thing is, I would bet that many of the nastiest are from people who were not around before V2.

I was around (born 1930) and I remember the old Mass (it was never called the TLM as people on this thread keep calling it).

When the Mass changed we changed - and it was not traumatic; except when they removed the altar railings from some churches, that was traumatic, I will admit.

But the postings about abuses in the Pauline Mass I have never seen.

What is a “Clown Mass”? I have never even heard that term before seeing it on posts on CA. So, I will not consider that as having anything at all to do with V2 or the Pauline Mass, or any Catholic Mass, for that matter.

I have on two occasions seen the abuse of the Holy Eurcharist - once I stopped a woman from putting the Host in her pocket - second time I saw a man who had taken the Host in his hand break it in two pieces and give one piece to his small child who he had carried with him in the Communion line. I wanted to say something to the father after Mass but couldn’t find him. Possibly, he was foreign and that would not have appeared wrong to him.

Abuses like this, however, can be stopped by distributing the Holy Eucharist to people only on the tongue, as the Holy Father does, so how can that be blamed on V2.

I have never received the Host in my hand and I was never told by anyone that I must take the Host in my hand, so that was not stipulated at V2.

Also, I would never accept Holy Communion from a lay person. Their hands are not consecrated, why should they even touch the Host.😦

At my church we have an excellent choir and at a Mass when the full choir is not present we have a Cantor and the music is sacred music.:harp:

In the spirit of Lent let’s all moderate our passions and keep down the anger.:grouphug:

:blessyou:
