I realize most folks aren’t able to travel as much as they’d like due to the pandemic or other factors, like health or finances.

In fact, my wife and I will be celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary in August and had originally planned to take our first ever cruise but now plan to remain closer to home.

Just thought it might be nice to take a stroll down memory lane and look back at some of your most enjoyable vacations you’ve ever taken or would like to take if you were able.

Consider the following and anything else you feel comfortable in sharing:

Destination

What made/makes the destination special to you?

For me, my favorite vacation was when my wife and I went to Spain in 2013.

It was special because my wife is a Spanish professor and had never had been to Spain before. She loved it and her reaction brought me joy. We went to Madrid with a side trip to Toledo, and Barcelona.

My dream vacation would be a pilgrimage to the Holy Land with a side trip to Italy - Rome, Florence, Venice, and other parts.

I’ve never been to Holy Land and would imagine that the Bible would come alive if I ever went. If any of you have ever gone to Holy Land, I’d love to hear your recommendations.

Also, was it safe to go there?

If you want to go to the Holy Land, I STRONGLY recommend you just take a tour, run by whatever faith you want to see the Holy Land perspective from. Maybe plan for an extra couple days in Jerusalem at the end so you can see a few things that were left off the tour.

Yes, it’s generally safe to go there. Once in a great while there is a bombardment or something (like last year) but that’s been rare in recent years.

Thanks for the advice. My pastor leads a group from church every year in the spring (except this year because of COVID), so I might consider doing that if I ever went. I think he links up with a respected local Jewish guide there who travels around with the group in a bus.

A tour group would be new for us. We’ve never done that before but I am open to it.

We usually just study up on our travel destination, buy a tour book, and then do our own thing at our own pace, but that was travel within USA, Canada, Mexico, and Europe.

For example, in Spain we stayed at B&Bs and then took the ‘hop on, hop off’ tour buses that frequented the main tourist sites so we could stay longer in places of interest and less time elsewhere.

Plus, my wife has some health issues, so having the flexibility to go back to the room and rest for a bit as needed was a plus. I assume we wouldn’t have that ability with a tour group, but I may be wrong.

On the other hand, just sitting back and letting someone else worry about all the logistics sounds attractive to me, because I am the one who normally has to do that otherwise. A tour group would allow that.

Thanks again for the (name removed by moderator)ut.

Thanks for the reply, (name removed by moderator). I am familiar with Nashville (brother-in-law lived there) but not Destin. Destin appears to be on the Gulf Coast of Florida near Alabama. I hear it is a popular destination.

I’ve never been to that area, unless it is like Tampa, where I went once to visit a sister. Is Destin nice?

My wife and I are not really into crowded, touristy things, so our favorite vacations are to the mountains. We have been to Colorado (the Rocky Mountains) a few times. Those are probably the best vacations because we loved the hiking. Our second favorite place to go is to some randomly chosen (but nice) cabin in North Carolina where there is no one around. She loves to look at the mountains as they bring her peace. I like for her to have peace, so I an receptive to anyplace she wants to go that will bring her that peace.

I also like the mountains and think mountain scenery is wonderful. I also would imagine that it could be one of the safer vacation destinations currently due to the wide open spaces.

We went to a cabin in Tennessee one year with family and enjoyed it a lot. It was more like a lodge instead of a cabin since all my siblings and their families came, too.

A little country I never knew existed till I saw it listed on worldometer concerning corona virus…
St.Kitts and Nevis 🙂 I would like to go there and explore.

Is that part of the eastern Caribbean? My wife and I were hoping to take our first ever cruise from Puerto Rico to some of the islands around there and the name St Kitts rings a bell.

It sounds like a hidden gem kind of place. Thanks for sharing, Greenfields. I hope you can make it there some day.

Japan. 🏯

Its history, customs and culture have fascinated me since I was a child. 🎎 🎏 👘

Also, FOOD! 🍣🍜🍱🍲 Japanese cuisine is one of my two ultimate favorites (the other is Greek). My Japanese friends tell me that while its exported food is already high quality, the country tends to keep the really good stuff for itself so if you want to eat authentic Japanese food you have to go there.

Ideal length of holiday: in order to have no regrets, 3-6 months. I’ll probably only be able to make this trip once, so I’ll need time to do (and eat 😋) everything I want to do.

I know the Holy Land is a popular choice, but to honor a promise I made to my father when I turned 18 I have not spent much time pondering this possibility until Dad died earlier this year. It may seem backwards, but even though I’m no longer bound to that promise I would still go to Japan first just because I’ve had that trip on my mind for so much longer. Also, living in Europe means going to the HL is logistically simpler for me than if I still lived in North America, while going to Japan remains as complicated as it always was. I’d rather do the Japan trip while I’m still relatively young and able to contend with such challenges. 🤓

My ideal vacation would entail taking the Trans-Siberian train across Russia, stopping for a little while in some of the cities and towns along the way, maybe with a detour into Mongolia.

Obviously this a months-long trip, and requires thorough planning, free time, and money 💴.

I hope to do it while I’m still young.

Yes, that trip is definitely not a typical one I hear about much but sounds fascinating, especially if done before the Siberian winter brings the super cold weather.

I would imagine that part of the world has more “territory less traveled by” than most, and possibly some unique experiences to be had.

Thanks for sharing, Salibi.

Japan has not been on my radar (to me from pictures it seems very crowded and hectic, like New York City) but the way you describe it sounds like an inviting place to go to, especially for excellent cuisine. I know the Kobe beef is famous for its high quality. Sounds like the Japan tourism commission should hire you because you sound “all in” for Japan!

I envision Japan being an expensive travel destination, but maybe I’m wrong on that.

I hope you get to go there some day and it is all you envision. Sounds exotic.

I must be the only person that cannot think of anywhere that I would want to go for vacation. 🥴

Nothing wrong with that. Staycations are nice, too. At least I hope so, because I will probably be doing that in a few weeks on my wedding anniversary.

I think I am always stopped by things like the annoyance of getting through the airport, language barriers, and a bit of my traveling partner’s personality.😂 It seems more pleasant to just stay home.

I lost my wallet once on a trip. That wasn’t fun, either. Staying near home definitely has its advantages, as well.
