Iāve never been to Holy Land and would imagine that the Bible would come alive if I ever went. If any of you have ever gone to Holy Land, Iād love to hear your recommendations.
@Tommy999, whether you go with a group on a guided tour or on your own, the main places youāll visit are pretty much standardized: Jerusalem, Nazareth, the Sea of Galilee, Bethlehem, and possibly the Dead Sea. There are just a few specific suggestions Iād make, visits that I would pick out as especially rewarding.
In Jerusalem:
ā¢ The walk through Hezekiahās water tunnel
ā¢ The Israel Museum, including the Shrine of the Book and the scale model of Jerusalem as it was in the time of Jesus.
ā¢ Make sure you attend Mass in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher
ā¢ The Western Wall
ā¢ Gethsemane and the walk up the Mount of Olives, with the unparalleled view of the Temple Mount.
In Galilee:
ā¢ Sepphoris, now an archeological site 3 or 4 miles outside Nazareth. It was the old capital of Galilee before Herod Antipas built his new capital at Tiberias.
ā¢ In Tiberias, have dinner one evening at one of the little restaurants on the boardwalk. Israelās best wines are grown right here in Galilee and the Golan, on the opposite side of the lake.
ā¢ In Capernaum, try and attend Mass in the round church that stands above St. Peterās house.
ā¢ Drive slowly all around the Sea of Galilee, if possible twice, once in each direction. It doesnāt take long. The complete circuit is less than 40 miles.
Before you arrive in Israel, have a good look at Jerome Murphy-OāConnorās excellent guidebook. He was an Irish Dominican who lived most of his adult life in Jerusalem.
