What would be happening if we didn't pray for souls in purgatory

There are varying theological opinions on what the souls in Purgatory can do when they are still sitting in Purgatory and whether they can pray for us. See discussion here.

Now let’s assume they can pray for us while sitting in Purgatory…and of course we know if they should get out and go to Heaven, they can definitely pray for us when they become saints.

Perhaps in Purgatory they can pray for the whole world, and perhaps they do. But if someone did you a special favor, would you not pray for that person a little bit extra?

Saints in heaven (which would include those in Purgatory when they reach Heaven) can and do pray for the whole world, but when we ask a specific saint to pray for us, it’s reasonable to assume that they say a little extra prayer on our behalf beyond what they say for the world in general.

But if you could pay for the window and broke the window despite being told expressly to stop playing ball, and against his calls to you, ignored him and then went on to break the window, would it not be responsible to have you pay for it?
Jesus’ Intercession doesn’t stop.
But in heaven, we are supposed to be like Jesus. We grow in Him and He in us. We as sinners who have a bunch of sin don’t exactly do this. So, those sinners are being formed to be like Jesus in purgatory, down to the very minor sins, to be like Him.

I believe you may be confusing purgatory with limbo when you question if it must be believed by Catholic faithful. Limbo has never been a binding teaching.

In this analogy we are always unable to pay for the window…
 
Then perhaps mow some lawns or get a job, depending on how young you are. Probably better than wasting time breaking windows by going against what your dad’s saying.

But you should AT LEAST be there/help out when the dad puts back the window.

An analogy always breaks down. I am taking it that you do not realize that even a millionaire kid cannot pay for the window if forgiveness is free . The father does not even remember it was ever broken.

I’m confused here. Paying for the window is not about being forgiven. Forgiveness is free. The kid is already forgiven and is loved.

Despite the free gift of forgiveness, love and mercy, there is still a window missing from the house that needs replaced. You can’t just leave a hole there.

As Kei mentioned, we need to help father repair the consequences as soon as possible.

You are confusing forgiveness and reparation.
They are not the same.
Say you wanna be a cool cat, and hang with the wrong crew. You start using graffiti on walls all around.
Say you graffiti the walls of someone’s house. They catch you in the act. Your family is friends with theirs. Say graffiti-ing property is illegal. Now, he could report you to the police. But, he says, he’ll forgive you. You are not getting reported.
BUT, he doesn’t want you to go around continuing in this activity. He wants you to learn a lesson.
So, he says, he wants you to wipe off all the graffiti you did.

If we want to be straight forward without analogy, then, you see, it depends on the state of our souls. The purpose is to be like Christ. If we die stained by sin, that is not like Christ. If we die in a state of Grace without this, then that is much more like Christ.

In Catholic theology, God’s Mercy is NOT at odds with His Justice, but flows forth from it.
