What would happen to a priest if

I was wondering what would happen to a priest if he admitted to masturbating and having impure thoughts, worse looking at a dirty magazine?

Since it seems to be a need that most men, no matter how they try to overcome, need routinely. I am sure there are a small percentage of priests who are able to not give into their sex drive.

Would he be kicked out of the priesthood for admitting this or would his sins be forgiven and he would just try to keep on being a priest by trying his best to remain celibate?

The priest is human not perfect. He would be absolved of his sins, like the rest us that fall short, in his Confession. I believe this to be in line with the Catholic Church teaching.

He would be forgiven if his repentance is sincere. He would not be kicked out.

“If any one purifies himself from what is ignoble, then he will be a vessel for noble use, consecrated and useful to the master of the house, ready for any good work. So shun youthful passions and aim at righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call upon the Lord from a pure heart.” (2 Tim 2:21-22)

But if he persisted in his ways, then as Paul says, “As for those who persist in sin, rebuke them in the presence of all, so that the rest may stand in fear.” (1 Tim 5:20)

A priest is required to be in the state of grace when he is saying the mass.

Well lets look at the statistics though.

this was a 25 year study of catholic priests done by By A.W. Richard Sipe
A study of Swiss priests published on May 12, 2003, revealed that 50% of that clergy had mistresses. Father Victor Kotze, a South African sociologist conducted a survey of the priests in his country (1991) and found that 45% had been sexually active during the previous two year period.

Pepe Rodriguez published his book length study of the sexual life of clergy in Spain (La Vida sexual del Clero 1995). He concluded that among practicing priests 95% masturbate; 7% are sexually involved with minors and 26% have “attachments to minors;” 60% have sexual relations, 20% have homosexual relations.

My 25 year ethnographic study of celibacy published in 1990 had drawn comparable conclusions about the celibate/sexual activity of Catholic priests in America. I stand by my findings that at any one time 50% of American clergy are sexually active. When in 1994 a BBC television reporter faced Cardinal Jose Sanchez, Prefect of the Congregation of the Clergy at the Vatican with those and other figures from the study, the Cardinal’s response was, “I have no reason to doubt the accuracy of those figures.”

I am. A friend of mine told me something (which I don’t even want to reveal) and I know there are some (very few) priests who have fallen into it. We must pray for them.

few? 107 Catholic clegy members were convicted of sex abuse against children. I can’t swallow “few”. Unfortunately I can’t swallow “few” in any one denomination, not even my own.

No, he would not be removed from the priesthood for this. Everybody has a problem with sin. The Church is a hospital for sinners not a museum for saints.

  1. Few. How many Catholic clergy members are there all throughout the world? What percentage will 107 make of the total. It will be a small fraction (much lesser than 1).
 
You are right that it is less than 1%, however one case is too many.
 
One must also consider age. Many men have issues with this when younger and eventually grow out of it. There are many factors involved, but the reduction of sex drive as a natural by-product of aging is a factor. Not to mention the increase in maturity. And I am not even mentioning grace from God to help.

As far as the who is having sex with whom, the overall numbers support the supposition that Catholic priests are less likely to be involved in any form of sexual misconduct than non-Catholic. AS far as abusing kids goes, one is too many but as long as we allow sinners to live, it will occure.

That’s because making anti-Catholic attacks is your favorite past time.
The fact is - 107 is little more than 1/10 of 1% of all Catholic Priests. Those figures pale in comparison to sexual abuse in American Protestant Churches.

Christianity Today** (a Protestant Evangelical magazine) noted that there were “70** child abuse allegations reported against American Protestant churches each week during the last ten years,” a quarter of which were against pastors. (“Go Figure” May 21, 2002)

By my calculations, that makes approximately 3,640 cases per year and 36,400 in a ten year period. Since you deny that there are 30,000 or so Protestant denominations, that means that there are MANY repeat offenders in each of the offending denominations.

Any thoughts?

How did you make the leap from a question about masturbation to the priest scandal?

If you’re saying that every man who masturbates is someone who molests a child, this world is in worse shape than everyone thinks.

One has nothing to do with the other.

That is not the case with the Catholics I know !

Well he meant then that catholic priests are engaged in less sexual misconduct then catholics or non-catholics then? Ok then I go along with that then. Catholic priests are less likey to be engaged in sexual misconduct than your average catholic or non-catholic.

I meant to say non-Catholic cleargy. The numbers for child molestation are about 10 to 1, and adultry/fornacation are at least 8 times as high.
