What Would Jesus Drive? Pope Tells Priests To Buy Humble Cars

When I was a kid the priests received a new 4 door full size car every year from a member who owned a dealership. I believe these then went back to to dealership to be resold as low mileage cars formerly driven only by a priest (or nun). The convent also got a new car but they had to share. A comparable car nowadays would be a Ford Taurus, or Chevrolet Impala, though these newer cars are leaps and bounds more luxurious than older cars were.

I am a little confused by one part of the Pope’s remarks. He seemed to group all priests and religious together. My understanding is that the perspective about material goods is, by design, very different between religious (priests, nuns, sisters, etc.) and secular priests.

All that I have seen through Googling on this is secular news reporting (AND editing). Therefore, it is entirely possible that the confusion is caused by the news MEDIA and not by the Holy Father himself. I am sure that a Jesuit AND an archbishop (now Pope) is not ignorant of the difference between religious and secular with regard to material goods, whereas a lot of the ‘religion writers’ are often quite woefully ignorant.
 
Jesus would deserve whatever the best car is out there…

And then He’d sell it and feed and shelter people and buy just a new pair of sandals for walking…

He’s just that kind of Guy.
 
Pope Francis should take a page out of the Gipper’s book: Thou shalt not speak ill of another priest (at least in public).
 
He would take public transportation, so he wouldn’t have to own anything.

Apparently, Francis does use a compact car when going to appointments around the Vatican rather than the “official Mercedes limo.” And he uses JPII’s open air jeep for public appearances. (Which Vaticanistas have pointed out Benedict used when in St. Peter’s Square as well.)
 
You have a great sense of humor. What you say is true about the Jaguar.
 
I just happened to read the recent post that said Pope Francis recently said it pained him to see priests driving ‘flashy’ cars and he thought they should choose a more ‘humble’ vehicle. Well, let’s think about his statement for a minute. There seems to be a contradiction, right? It is factual that the popemobile is a VERY exotic luxurious vehicle and I wouldn’t even attempt to guess at the price the Catholics paid for it.
It even has a special pearlescent paint with gold trim. These luxury vehicles have been purchased for decades. I find this very intriguing. Mercedes has supplied the past popes with many of their very luxuriant vehicles. There have been Cadillacs and even a Ferrari Mondial! I personally don’t believe the Bible teaches that God wants His children to be poor. Apparently, all the popes agree with my revelation. God is pleased when we assist others and how could I do that if I was poor myself? The attribute of a child of God is to gain to give and God loves a cheerful giver. Jesus said just a cup of cold water given in His name would not be done unnoticed, but would be rewarded. The little boy who gave his lunch probably received all the many baskets of food that was left over. He was a very generous boy and I have no doubt God was pleased with him and this little fellow went home with MUCH more than he had when he left home that morning! That’s just how good God is! There is always more than enough for those who are givers. So lets not fret about the model of vehicles we drive; that’s hypocrisy. God is able to bless each of us beyond our wildest dreams and when He does, let’s be generous and share with those in need; that is what glorifies God. There are no limitations with Him; all things are possible. When you see someone who is blessed and drives a super nice car, just say, “God, thank you for blessing that person. You are so good!”
 
I think Jesus would choose a car that was functional but not flashy or over heavy on natural resources. I think He would also make an excellent and safe driver. 😉 👍
 
Maybe He could get a Terrafugia. That kind of car/plane is a great idea. His disciples could get microlight aircraft and fly along with Him since the Terrafugia doesn’t seat too many. I think it seats about two - the pilot and the passenger. It would be quite a sight: a bunch of guys flying around the sky. That would wake the Pharisees up! I wonder what they would say. Maybe they would think they “lost it” and would not believe what they saw. Of course, with no superhighways, it probably would be a good idea.
 
He would drive a Chevrolet for Hendrick Motor Sports in NASCAR’s Cup series and would condemn open wheel racing as ungodly.
