Just when you think you’ve heard it all…

What Would Jesus Weigh?

"You’ve heard of faith-based initiatives. Now, perk up your ears and put down your fork. Faith-based weight loss is drawing converts in Buzz.

The Weigh Down Workshop looks to the lessons of the Bible to reduce waistlines and trim thighs. The program, which was designed by nutritionist Gwen Shamblin, has been around for years, but it recently found a praise-worthy (and media-friendly) parable in Maggie and Andy Sorrells. The Tennessee couple once jointly tipped the scale at nearly 1,000 pounds. They’ve lost more than half that heavy load by following the Weigh Down way."

Weigh Down is not new it has been around a while and has been successful, probably because it offers a support network, similar to Weight Watchers and Tops, which most experts agree is a huge factor in success. The Catholic version of a spirituality approach to weight and body image issues is Light Weigh. The program looks excellent and we tried it but it is too expensive for people here (at the time we investigated, about $70 per person). Weigh Down is about the same or a bit more expensive.

I suppose any group of like-minded people supporting each other is a good thing.

I think Light Weigh is focused in not only losing weight but. and especially, the focus is on Jesus and deepening our relationship with Him.

Weigh Down went off the deep end several years ago when the belief in the Trinity was denied. A lot of churches dropped the program. I’m surprised that MSM is giving it attention again. Weigh Down is old news.

Well, I don’t know as, for myself I might prefer to frame it, what would St. Thomas Aquinas weigh?

I think faith based weight loss programs are great!
Having said that, I don’t mean to be disrespctiful but I think this
“What woudl Jesus drive/wear/wieigh, spend, ect” is going to far.
I mean- Jesus lived 2000 years ago and and became incarnate for us to live the (sinless) life we couldn’t live- and to die on the cross for our sins. Who cares what He would have done in today’s 21st century outside of moral issues?

I hope this progrrm doesnt go for the 40day, no food, no water diet all while in a desert. True I would lose weight, and it would bring me closer to god, being dead and all, but Im not sure I want to be that close to God, just yet. 😛

This made me chortle!

And for our more contemporary apologist friends, you might also phrase it, “what would G.K. Chesterton weigh?”

I try to emulate GK in all respects. Pass the bagels and cream cheese, please.

As a participant in Light Weigh, I can tell you it is a very helpful program. It teaches one to turn to God in all things, and has a very effective sacrificial aspect that makes one really stop to think before eating.

It doesn’t require or enforce artificial eating plans, but sound eating practices that can be used for the rest of your life, painlessly.

Needless to say, I am a fan of the program. It was God’s answer to my prayer! 🙂

Which faith does it follow? Or is it a genral beloief in God only?

I looked up Life Weigh. It looks wonderful for those that need it and can afford it. We tend to be on a very strict budget with seven in the family.

But I must admit that running around after the young children has kept us slimmer then many of our friends.😃

I agree with another poster. These “What would Jesus do?” things are not in my taste. I might ask myself the questions but generally know the answer before I even ask the question.
