What would make you become Catholic?

This is a question for Protestants out there viewing this thread. I am a convert from Protestantism myself. I was just wondering what would have to happen for you to convert to the Catholic church? If you have any objections to the CC, please list them. What converted me was researching the beginnings of the church. I always wanted to know what the early church fathers believed or first century Christians if that phrase seems more applicable. The more I sought after the truth of what those Christians that were taught directly from the Apostles believed, the more I understood this quote by Cardinal Newman…“To be deep in history is to cease to be a Protestant.” God bless you all as you seek for the Fullness of the Truth.

Oh gads, I had every objection imaginable as a protestant. :rolleyes: 😦 When I realized that it just didn’t seem right for me to be in a protestant church any longer, I thought “well, I’ll take RCIA because I really don’t ‘know’ that much about Catholicism. At the very least, I’ll be able to legally take the Catholic communion”. It’s almost embarassing, the prejudices and misinformation I held. :mad: Little did I know that Jesus had a WHOLE OTHER PLAN once I entered RCIA. I’ve learned that God happens when I get out of the way, and this was no exception.

Bottom line, I think what helped me become Catholic was the DESIRE to know more about it, other than just the misconceptions with which I was raised.

A table open to the baptized - I am not saying an “open” table - but a table open to those properly baptized and having confessed and repented of their sin.

I cannot see Jesus refusing anyone who is baptized to receive Him at the Table. That is is why I am not Catholic.

What would convince me?

1). Empirical evidence of God, or direct contact from her.

2). Evidence that Jesus truly existed exactly as the very select four gospels of the Bible portray him, and not as the other 80 odd do.

3). Divine revelation that showed me that God approved of all of the Catholic Church’s activities in the last 2000 years (the anointing of saints, their intercessory powers, an explanation for the bloodbaths of the Crusades/Inquisition, and a few other loose ends).
 
To be honest.

I am thinking about becoming a Catholic, but of course, this is still far off, cause I am a bible person, I want proof for everything in detail in it, so if I do convert, it will be a while.

The Catholic Church gave us the Bible. Why wouldn’t you want to belong to the Apostolic Church of Christ. the one Jesus started in 32 AD? What proofs do you seek? The Resurrection? The inspired word of God?

Ah yes, the Catholic Church voted upon the books that would make up the Bible. Men cast votes upon the ideal books, therefore it is divine.

I had never heard that. If you read about St. Jerome and Pope St. Damasius, you will find that is not the case. Please cite your references that “Men cast votes upon the ideal books.”
 
I thought the question/invitation was to answer the question… not answer the question and then get beat up for our answers.

This is what is maddening about some of the posters at CAF. You get set you up and then they smack you.

What is a table? Catholics have an altar where we participate in the passion of Christ and partake of his body and blood. Are you suggesting that there should be “open communion?”

…Do not be rude my friend, the reason I do not convert is because I try to stick with what I choose, I just want to make sure, understand what I mean? If not, then pm me questions, and I will explain as best I can.

First Nicean Council, where they chose the first four Gospels, and edited some.

Converson is an ongoing journey. It is not something I choose, but something God has imposed on me. It’s a matter of openiing the eyes of my heart to His Word and His will.

It’s not a one time thing, it’s a life-long process.

The closer you draw to God, the more you become humbled and aware of his mercy. It’s late, you have been given much. Digest, come back, we’ll talk tomorrow.

I would have to be first convinced that Jesus is/was God.
Abandon Papal Infallibility.
Convince me of the truth of substitutionary atonement.
End it’s political opposition in the realm of gay marriages (they can have whatever theology they want, but leave the political process in the secular realm).
Ordain women.
Ordain married men.
Allow already ordained men to marry.
Allow non-abortive forms of birth control.

Where did you get this information from? There is no record whatsoever that the canon of scripture was decided on at this council, much less “voted on.”

Also, the claim that Gospels have been “edited” is disproved by the fact that you can extract the entire New Testament from the writings of the early church fathers. It is very reliable.

It comes back to a circular argument. There is no place in Scripture that demands all Christian Tradition be found in Scripture. The Bible is a Tradition of the Church; the Book is not self-authenticating.

If the Bible is a tradition, why does your church state is a separate? It takes as its foundation Scripture AND Tradition.
