What Would You Most Like Pope Francis To Do?

Whilst the priorities of certain tasks will undoubtedly vary throughout the time Pope Francis resides in the Vatican, as Catholics what would you most like to see Pope Francis do? This could be anything from I’d like to see him engage with this issue to, I’d like to see him try out some dance moves in St. Peter’s square.

As an Anglican I’d like to see Pope Francis engage more with different branches of Christianity and consider the varied views on a number of subjects the Catholic church, in my opinion, has been sometimes quite stubborn about.

I want to see a definite and forceful focus on combating the errant ways of many Catholics in the developed world. While Benedict was very much Orthodox on these matters, I don’t know that he ever had the charisma or energy to really speak forcefully. And I think this is the matter of supreme urgency. It feels too much like we’re losing (or have lost) the underpinnings of a strong and vibrant society.

Sometimes, many of us, especially in the west, take our own views with a big helping of ego, and presume that is what is needed.

The Church has, at times, been a bit stubborn. The Roman rite has exhibited this, for example, in the denigration that went on about the Eastern rite churches; John Paul was able to turn that around.

There are, however, areas in which the Church is not going to budge; for example, gay marriage, contraception, and women’s ordination. The problem is that others see the Church as stubborn. The Church sees the issues as matters of truth (and Truth, if you will - meaning that they are not rules we have made up, but rather issues from God). The greatest difficulty is that most people who are pusing thises issues do so from a point of truth, and Truth, being relative. Truth, which is identified as with God and coming from God, is not relative; it is, like God, absolute. Relativism is not something which happened in the last 50 years or so, but it is young in that it traces back to beginnings in the Enlightenment.

The issue of ordaining women, for example, was put thoroughly to rest by John Paul 2; however, in circles which identify themsleves loosely as Catholic, it lingers on. They, however, seem to have no knowledge of how the Church resolves some issues; once something is defined as a doctrinal matter, that ends the discussion. They continue to try to discuss it, to no avail. This is not to ascribe evil intent with them, but it is a matter that either they do not understand doctrinal matters, or they have some idea that what is defined as truth really isn’t true.

To be honest with you that is beautiful, but when people don’t know what is going on, they tend to be uninterested. I like that I can be at mass, and hear mass in my language. I think it helps us as faithful to be better Catholic. Bc if we know what is going on in our language, what better Catholic Apologetic would you want.

It is completely restored; it is called the EF (as in, Extrordinary Form). There are people going to the OF who are not aware of the EF (either that it is being offered, or what it is like); there are others who have been to it, and choose to go to the OF; and there are those who want to go to the OF and have no interest in the EF. It appears the vast majority of people do not desire the EF; so I am sure, since you prefer it, that just as you would not want it taken away from you, you would also in charity not want the OF taken away from them.

Especially since the last two Popes said the OF, and there is no reason to presume the new Pope will not do likewise.

Me too! Either we have faith in God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit or we don’t. He’s only been Pope for a few hours and already there are people working themselves up to disagreeing with him and propagating innuendo. Way too sad.

Back to the OP’s question: I would like to see him to be an instrument in strengthening the faith.

As well, I would like him to take a harder line on clerical child abuse and sexual and financial scandal and cover-ups of same.

Any evidence or allegations of misdeeds or potential misdeeds in these areas should immediately be referred to the secular authorities unless the seal of the confessional is involved.

Mandate that the Eucharist may only be received on the tongue while kneeling. This would restore such a sense of reverence for the Real Presence of Our Lord Jesus Christ and act to prevent many horrifying abuses (both intentional and unintentional).
