I think I’d add this to my wish list:
The Pope needs to clarify the Christian duty to charity and giving to the poor, as it relates to the right of people to become wealthy from their own honest labors…and the point at which charity is no longer necessary.
Here in the United States, we have a large number of liberal Catholics (for example, the Kennedys) who cherry-pick church teachings, dump the morality question into the trash, and talk about the need to help “the poor”…yet, in the United States, “poor” generally still means having sufficient food and housing, access to emergency medical care, and levels of consumer and personal luxuries that the truly needy in other countries can only dream of.
Personally, I’m fully willing and anxious to help those who legitimately need it…those who lack food or shelter, who suffer from illness or misfortune, who find themselves unable to support a respectable living through no fault of their own. But I don’t like seeing my taxes (or the taxes of anyone else) raised to support those who just as often as not end up taking their food stamps to the strip club, or wait outside WalMart on Black Friday for a new cellphone or TV.
I’d like to see the Pope explain further whether this is the appropriate view for a Catholic, or errant thinking.
