What Would You Most Like Pope Francis To Do?

I hope that Pope Francis promotes diversity within the Church. I hope he encourages all valid forms of celebrating liturgies - ordinary, extraordinary, Eastern, Western, or whatever! I hope he empowers women and homosexuals in the Church (within Canon Law, of course). And I also hope that he muzzles the bitter hate speech that has wormed its way into so many of us Catholics today.
 
  1. Bring the Eastern Orthodox, all remaining Anglicans, and the SSPX in.
  2. Increase reverence and devotion to the Most Blessed Sacrament.
  3. Restoration of the Jesuit order and especially Jesuit universities.
  4. Increase devotion to Our Lady (as someone else said, declare Mary as co-Mediatrix a dogma of the Church).
  5. Continue Pope JP2 and Pope Emeritus Benedict’s “reform of the reform” of the liturgy and put an end to liturgical abuse.
  6. Rebuke Catholic politicians who deny essential Catholic Truths.
  7. Reprimand Catholic leaders and theologians who publically oppose Catholic doctrine and lead faithful Catholics to error.

Any evidence or allegations of misdeeds or potential misdeeds in these areas should immediately be referred to the secular authorities unless the seal of the confessional is involved.

Cleaning house should be First priority. The Church can not long survive with the scandals of the clergy in protecting pedofiles or ignoring financial corruption. Getting its own house in order has to be done first before the Church has any credibility.

Abused kids and seminarians can not be ignored, those responsible in any way have to be rooted out. Complete openness, zero tolerance even up to excommunication and dismissal from the priesthood, if that’s what it takes to fix the problem.

The Church must reach out to folks who have left and folks in trouble BUT it can not compromise or dilute its fundamental principles of confronting evil, advocating holiness and promoting and spreading the love of God. We can not call evil, good, and we can not change basic rules or principles set down in scriptures.

There is nothing that says we can not have women priests or married priests. But that may take another generation or two of cardinals. UNLESS a revelation comes to the Pope or the Magisterium, this probably will not change in our lifetime. That has happened before, (with the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception).

AS far as God’s name, He is known by many names, what does it matter that people address Him differently, Yahweh, Jesus, Adonai, Allah, Jehovah, … take your pick or make up your own. The ONE God is the One God. IF someone else wants to call the One God something different from you, why should you care ???.

You should read the book, “The boy who met Jesus” by Immaculee Ilibagio. Jesus basically says God has been called by many names, it makes no difference what folks call Him.

As for Communion, I loved the old tradition of kneeling and only taking it on the tongue, but as someone said the original last supper was just taking bread by hand.

I think this Pope will be terrific and I believe He will be humble and try to lead the Church with Prayer and Love. BUT I hope and pray he recognizes the need to straighthen out the internal problems and scandals as soon as possible. May the Holy Spirit guide Him and grant him success in all his work. He has a monumental task ahead of him.
 
I’d really like to see him continue with the humility and solidarity with the poor that it seems he has shown as archbishop, reminding everyone of Jesus’s work among the poor and outcast of society and that the Church today is meant to carry on that work. I’d also like to see him take more action to handle the issues with the sex abuse crisis, as this is one of the things causing the most distrust of the Church today and it simply isn’t right that those who abuse children should be able to keep their positions. I’d like to see some revitalizing of the spirit of the Church, showing people how it is still relevant, not an outdated institution as many think. I’d like him to look at the celibacy for all priests rule. It’s my understanding that this is one thing that could actually be changed, and I think this would help the issue with the shortage of priests. Mostly, I just want him to lead humbly with the true spirit of Christ

My earnest prayer is that our new Pope will exhort the faithful to pursue personal sanctity and separation from the godless world. Far too many contemporary Catholics, especially the youth, have contented themselves with a hand in hand with the world type of religious practice and this is seriously tarnishing the Church’s reputation and credibility.

May the blessing of God Almighty be upon Pope Francis in these troublous times.

Love this. To encourage us to live holy lives. I so agree.

Also, I find it interesting he chose the name Francis, considering it was St. Francis who God has asked to rebuild his church. Perhaps this Pope will do a very wonderful job of helping guide us to live holier lives.

Actually, there is (regarding women “priests”): Ordinatio Sacerdotalis. The relevant paragraph is at the bottom of the page. The Eastern rites have married priests, but that’s unlikely to change in the Latin Rite. Married priests could theoretically happen, but women being ordained can’t happen. Hope this helps.

We are called to be separated. A people set apart. It doesn’t mean not in the world, just not of the world.

That’s what I hope the Pope does, helps lead the Church to be salt and light to the world. I pray he follows the Holy Spirit and such encourages us to do the same.

We can’t have women priests because the church does not have the authority to ordain them. The ordination of men only came from Jesus, when he chose the twelve apostles.

Well then wny not make Quantum Field Theory accessible to anyone!? Some things require thought and cogitation.

I think people should start using their brain instead of being lazy. There are plenty proofs for God and most atheists usually refute them on the basis of a misunderstanding (straw man fallacy… just look at the pitiful attempt of Dawkins to comment Aquinas).

The church is not ‘homophobic’. Just because someone disagrees with the LGBT lobby it does not make them homophobe.

The Church does not condemn homosexuals, but only some behaviors which are considered immoral.

Since there is ONLY ONE GOD, I think ‘God’ is more than sufficient.
 
What would I like him to do?
Visit hospitals, prisons, nursing homes. Touch people, pray with them, listen to them, bless them.

Who would I like him to be?
A servant of God and His people.
 
1- Continue the work to heal the Church after the various scandals.

2- Preserve the Gospel and Catholic doctrine

3- Bring all Christians together again (unlikely that it will happen in his lifetime but of course I think he should work toward reconciliation of the various denominations, without falling into syncretism)

4- Strongly address secularism and atheism. Challenge the post-modern culture.

5- Further promotion of the use of new media and technology by the priests and faithful laity. Promote a stronger presence of the Church in secular media, to work against the anti-catholic, anti-christian and anti-religious bias.

6- Give a good shake in the Roman Curia and put reliable, honest and virtuous people in the Vatican.

7- Excommunicate Hans Kung 😃 (actually… no… it will only make Kung more popular)

8- Order a crusade against the National “Catholic” Fishwr… Reporter 😛

Ok the last two are jokes, of course, but the ones above I’d like to see.
 
This is in response to previous posters’ flat refusal of another poster’s assertion that the Church is perceived as homophobic, and to the flat refusal of another poster’s desire for women priests.

A person’s words can be hurtful to homosexual people, even if the words are true and the person saying them is not actually homophobic.

Women were unjustly restricted from many things for thousands of years, from job opportunities to places of civil authority to voting. Is anyone surprised that many women have grown to resent any discrepancy between what men and women can do? I rarely ever here a defense of the all-male priesthood that is truly sensitive to that resentment and the reasons for that resentment.

If you hit someone in the head with a hammer of truth, he or she will not remember that you hit them with the truth. He or she will remember that you hit them with a hammer.

This is the big one, IMO. The Cult of Materialism is ruining the West.Atheism is perceived to be the “smart” choice by celebrities who use their positions in the media to hammer the faithful for being dullards or weaklings clinging to anachronistic belief systems.

I think with Pope Francis’ humility (plus being from Latin America) will help him immensely in this regard. Humility because, as other posters mentioned, attracts others. Being from LA will help because to many atheists (sadly and to their detriment) they could write off Benedict for being another old white guy (he’s a Nazi!) representing (in their eyes) a typically white institution. I think the Holy Father will show the true multicultural, multi-ethnic beauty of the Church.

I just simply want him to pursue more in comes to touching billions of faithfuls around the world, I want him to focus on the social media where the faith of the youngsters meets. I want him to have more communities to be built in every country to be more attach emotionally and shape every family with moral stability and defending the faith. It's time to go beyond of just a simple 1 hour mass every sunday. Youngsters must need to feel the responsibility of their faith

  2. Mandate that the Chalice be made available to the Laity in all liturgies.
  3. Mandate an explicit epiclesis of the Holy Spirit in all liturgies.

Ban EMHC’s, folk-rock “Masses,” hand holding during the Pater Noster, running around shaking hands during the “sign of peace,” glossalalia, inappropriate attire, dancing girls in the Mass…just getting warmed up!

Not only can’t ordination of women happen, but it should not happen. The Church is eternal, and secular society is not. The eternal Church does not bow to the pressure of ephemeral secular society.
