What You At Mass Wear Does Matter!

not trying to attack you per se, just that different people have different ideas on dress code violations…

I’m surprised how long this thread is getting:D

Ok, I’ll chime in. I was in RCIA last year. And the RCIA teacher made some comments like “oh I can’t believe how people dress in church! … bla… bla…bla…” I can’t remember what the person said specifically, but the tone was one of utter contempt.

Anyways, that always stayed with me.
And when I started going to Mass I kept wondering, “am I dressed ok? Is everyone judging me on my clothes?”…

I dunno…it seemed kindof weird to me but I don’t know.

I can honestly say I never thought about what people were wearing until that moment and I’ve been slightly paranoid ever since.

A similar conversation was sparked in RCIA about people wearing rosaries. “ohh, that is soooo wrong, they are not for decoration!”…

I don’t care, I wear mine. I disagree with them on that.🙂

Of course you will – likely until you get one that does not want people dressing like slobs for Mass.

Then you’ll likely disagree with him as well…
are you sure you are not God? you act like it.

If the shorts and tube-top fit…
I have never worn shorts nor a tube top in my life to church and I don’t wear them other places either

I think your only purpose in posting this was to hurt peoples feelsing and get a fight started

The problem is that there is usually NO dress code.

Even worse, some Catholics seem to have been brought-up not knowing how to dress appropriately for Mass.

Not at all. I would like to get people to THINK how their actions (dressing like slobs for Mass) DO impact others.

i think in part the thread is getting long because of Chuys “high and mighty” attitude. calling people slobs, thinks everyone should think like her… that sort of thing…

Well you don’t seem to think that other people can dress modestly …they just have to dress the way you think they should

I am not even going to waste my time with you…you are not worth it

Nothing high and mighty about my comments. I never suggested people should dress-up for Mass, I didn’t say that I dress-up for Mass, nor did I try to define a dress code.

What I did say is that people who dress like slobs for the Mass (shorts, tank-tops, revealing clothes, rude clothes, etc.) have a negative impact on the worship space.

Often very negative…

Please don’t suggest I said something that I never did. That’s not only offensive, it’s terribly disingenuous.

Dressing like a slob does not equate to dressing “modestly.” No way, no how. Often it’s quite the opposite.

Why worry about hard words like that? I am guessing that if most Catholics stopped to think, and really admitted it to themselves, that they would be well aware that it’s not a good think to wear shorts, tank tops, tube tops, etc. etc. etc. to Mass.

I think the more aggressively one responds, the more one knows they should be dressing differently for Mass but for some reason do not.

I think wearing a Rosary is offensive for one reason. As I type this it’s a fashion statement – worn by a lot of people who have no clue what a Rosary actually is.

You say you have slacks but don’t want to wear them every time you go to Mass? What are you saving them for?
For the record… I am not saving them. I said I don’t want to wear them every time. You are still missing my point. Blue jeans are not inappropriate. Excuse me for sounding country, but I am a born and raised Oklahoman. The slacks probably come out twice a month.

As for the other scenarios you mentioned. Yes, again, I would dress like that for restaraunts, government functions (I have worked at the Department of State Headquarters in Washington, D.C. for two years now; remember, I don’t have a desk job), and just about anywhere else, I don’t feel a need to put on slacks to prove I am prepared. I believe it is a generational thing. Most people over the age of 40 don’t wear jeans because they have had a lifetime to accumulate a decent wardrobe. I am only 29.

On a side note, perhaps I am cheap, but it is not new or a reflection of me. I wore my dress blue army uniform to my wedding. It is still the only suit I own to this day.

As a parent, I am more concerned with my children’s behavior than I am about them wearing “school clothes” to mass. No, they never wear shorts. I would rather hear compliments on how well behaved they are, and people say it regularly to my wife and me. As I said before, this is not about modesty. The fact that you are offended because you assume someone is not wearing their best clothing and is too lazy to purchase something to your standard speaks volumes about your priorities, and it says far more about you than someone who wears blue jeans.

Shorts are never appropriate at Mass.
What about for Eucharistic adoration? Sometimes when I am visiting a large city, I will pass a church that has the blessed sacrament exposed. Suppose I am a tourist in shorts, should I refrain from stopping in to worship Jesus?

:slapfight: seems so

Why not carry a pair of rolled-up lightweight pants to slip on?

That’s precisely what I do.

You wouldn’t have a choice at St. Peter’s at the Vatican or MANY other churches throughout the world.
