What's Latin Mass Attendance Like At Your Church?

The one at St Martin of Tours in Louisville looks like about 275-300average on Sunday. On Holy Days, the 6pm TLM’s are not as well attended, but I’d say 200 average. And I’m guessing. I could be off 50 or so either way.

St Martin’s has offered the TLM as an indult for a few years now, so the attendence there wouldn’t be of use as an indication of the effect H.H. BXVI’s Summorum Pontificum.

The stat I would love to see is the % of registered parishioners who attend the TLM at their parishes that have begun praying it since, or as a result of, BXVI’s SP.

I have recently started to go to St. John Cantius.

Yes, that would be an interesting stat.

My 2 cents:

(1) I normally do not attend Latin Rite services, but I do attend one particular church when they offer their monthy High Mass (either missa solemnis or at least missa cantata) in the EF. I find the congregation to be interesting: whereas the “antis” are always claiming that it’s for the dinosaurs, the fact is the congregation is composed mainly of people who are far you young to have been exposed to it when it was the norm. And their children. The number of young altar boys is remarkable. That, btw, is exactly what I’ve heard from a variety of sources, and it seems to be true.

(2) it seems to me that the hour at which the EF is offered has a definite bearing on attendance. The church that I frequent does it a 4pm, and gets a congregation of some 200 (or more, depending on the weather) which isn’t bad considering the awful hour. If it were done as an alternating part of the normal schedule, I believe (and so does the curate) attendance would be at least triple. But of course parish politics come into play with the scheduling there: the organist (a employee) categorically refuses to deal with anything having to do with the EF. He plain out hates it. At the same time, though, he demands to be paid if the EF is offered during in lieu of an OF service. Makes absolutely no sense to me. I’ve never heard of an employee making a demand even remotely similar to that and still having a job, and I’ve been around the block more than a few times. Organist no like? There’s the door. Don’t let it hit …

St Thomas More is at 81st-California in the Wrightwood area. The mass is a Tridentine, and it is also held at noon during the week, when attendance is probably around 30.

Oh, cool, I wasn’t aware of that Church. That is pretty far from me, I live on the Northwest Side of Chicago.

Maybe80 on Sunday morning for the High Mass and about the same for the Low Mass.

We also have a regular group of about 25-30 who attend daily Mass.

There are no more indult Masses since Summorum Pontificum, which removed the need for an indult.

Anywhere from 200 to 300 at the 9:30 Mass on Sundays. Lots of families.

I enjoy attending our Latin mas occassionaly, I can’t wait until they get a traditional choir, right now it is too quiet and hard for me to keep my attention.

The one Latin Mass I have attended had a rather poor attendance. It was perhaps 50, at best, and they were mostly elderly people. Being 24 at the time (I am 27 now) I stuck out like a sore thumb.

You go to Saint Martin de Tours too? If you ever see a group of seminarians there (in the suits and ties)… I’m one of them. It’s a nice occasional getaway.

Hi RH, Yes, I go there for the Sunday EF when I can drag myself out of bed in time. I don’t get off work till 2-3am Sunday morning, and by the time I get home and wind down, it’s nearly 5 am before I get to bed. I’m a member of St Louis Bertrand, and usually go to the 5:15 pm Mass there, even if I went to the 12:30 at St Martin’s.

You guys drive in from St Merinad ?

I just wanted to remind you that there never were any indults, the TLM was never abrogated .🙂

My church doesn’t have TLM, but there is one about 30 miles away from me that has it every Sunday. I have been at that particular parish for both forms, and there was actually more in attendance for TLM (pleasantly surprising me). I believe that TLM has been held there for 4 years (in fact, I think that this past Sunday was the 4 year anniversary). I also wasn’t the youngest there either (I’m 22), which was another pleasant surprise. Most of the women, regardless of age, wore a chapel veil.

God Bless!

Oops yeah, sorry. Still used to the old terminology. What I meant was not an SSPX liturgy but rather one “in full communion with Rome”.

In San Diego, I would guess a 2-3 hundred at the Low Mass and a few more for the High Mass. The daily Mass is less well attended, maybe a hundred or so most days. Incidentaly the Traditional mass in San Diego now has its own parish after years of worshiping in the mauseleum chapel. The prayers of the faithful were finally answered. Thanks to Bishop Brom for his consideration and concern for the faithful.

In New Orleans, it is probably between 3-400 most Sundays. They have no daily Mass there for the traditional Mass.

Yes. I try to go there once a month. We are usually upfront. I’m always trying to bring other traditionalist to a place that will provide them food 😛

The cathedral in my diocese has one latin mass in the chapel every Sunday. When my family can go(it’s about an hour away),it’s pretty much full, about 45-65 people.
