What’s preventing YOU from being a Catholic?

What’s holding YOU back?

May God guide our Life paths.

There’s a couple, at mass, who sit in the front row.
She’s cute, like Adrian in the Rocky movies.
He’s a tough Italian type - mobster leader type - handsome, rugged.
They are in their fifties.
He is trying to be a believer…and I can see it happening, after 3 months…
But he’s angry at God.

They lost their son to death - 3 months ago.
Not sure how, but I’d say heroin.

Today, at mass, he sat two invisible people away from her…in the pew…
Usually they sit side by side…he’s trying to find where ‘ he ‘ stands -
This church is great too - no matter what Priest -
a homily, top notch, is given.

Too many beliefs based on nothing but tradition and the speculative thoughts of ancient theologians. Too many important beliefs adopted by the vote of various councils. Too many practices based on the emotional, feel good ideas of the church members. Very little belief based on simple logic.

In some ways I am a Catholic. Some of the values taught by the Church are, to my mind, right. But some are not. But at its most fundamental, I see no reason to ascribe God, or gods, to the creation of the town universe. It seems far more likely to me that we created gods.

Would you name some specific beliefs that you disagree with?

I’m a reluctant Catholic.

My concerns are usually more cultural in nature. It’s the pray-pay-obey mentality that gets me. I don’t always feel free to have doubts, ask questions, or - horror of all horrors! - question teachings. Doing any one of those can all too often land you at the bottom of a CAF dogpile. Christ calls us to obedience; but living as a complete automaton can’t be the path to sainthood. Struggle is part of the journey.

History!

Newman had some opposite effect here!

Being deep in HISTORY I cannot submit to Catholicism.

I am a lifelong Catholic but find my self in deep sympathy with Clarkgamble and Blackforest.

So much is too legalistic and while tradition can be wonderful it can also be a shackle.

I’m sorry you feel that way. CAF can lead to a dog fight, unfortunately, which is honestly why I largely avoided it when I was still discerning if I wanted to convert. (Now I enjoy it).

Doubts and questions should lead you to research and learn more about the Faith. Keep asking till you find the answers because they’re there. No one, including God, wants you to be an automaton. I converted becaus Catholicism actually is very logical. Peace.

I’m cradle Lutheran, and that’s the Christian faith I adher to or run from. No other faiths need apply.

Having said that, I do respect the RCC. I’m not inclined to convert, but you do you.

For most humans it is normal to have doubts .

It should also be acceptable to ask questions . There would be no need for Catholic Answers if Catholics were not asking questions .

Wrestling with doubt and and asking questions can be part of spiritual growth . They have been for me .

I disagree with fundamental aspects of Catholic teaching, and fundamental aspects of having a religion at all.

Do you believe in God or some kind of superior consciousness?
