What's the craziest Anti-Catholic whopper you've ever heard?

Those who persist until death in deliberate disobedience will not go to Heaven. (Someone who is honestly following his conscience - not his whims and feelings but his actual conscience - cannot be condemned for doing what they sincerely understand to be right - God isn’t a trickster.) But we have no way of knowing who among the living will do that, so it’s not up to us to condemn anyone - that’s God’s call. 🙂
AMEN TO THAT!!

I like this thread, having grown up in the bible belt, because it equips us–or helps to do so–deal with anti-Catholicism in our situations of our own daily lives. I have been dealing with it all my life. When I was confirmed the Archbishop gave me a light “slap” on the cheek. This was to teach me that I must be prepared to suffer for our faith. While I have never been thrown to the lions or burned at the stake, I have suffered the slow, agonizing tide of anti-Catholic prejudice that is deep in the culture of my bible belt state. I have had the problem, recently, of members of my family being prey to conversion pressure from evangelicals. I have spent hours soothing someone who was accosted by virulent anti-Catholicism. Our next door neighber wants to “marry off” my sister and I to protestant husbands and then make us eastern star women masons! I’m not joking! And the pressure is constant. Yet, their grandmother needs looking after much more than they can do. My sister does that. She makes sure the old diabetic woman has not fallen. That is what Jesus says we must do. But when the family comes home from bingo they start in on her again about how “abused” we are being Catholics. The old woman’s needs are the only thing that makes us have any contact with them…and being neighbors there has to bee some contact. But perhaps this is a cross? Bearing wittness to our Catholic Christian faith by a work of mercy while enduring the bile and hatred against our faith? This is something for which I must submit my will to God and renounce my pride! It hurts…but the slap in the face is real…and the devil does not like our religion does he? Because Catholics are the true faith. Persecution against us in the form of whoppers? Old as the church herself—when the Romans called us cannibals.

Hi, Janine Therese,

Welcome to CAF! 🙂 And, thank you for giving the good example in caring for others even in the face of adversity!

In the lives of saints there are some examples of the very persecutors seeing the love these early Christians had in the face of death - these tormentors were converted.

Your example of doing good and not rendering evil for evil is a blessing to all. Don’t lose heart in doing good.

God bless

What did Our Lord promise to do about it? How and when will He take care of them? I’m asking because one of the “whoppers” I’ve heard from non-Christians about the Church is that Jesus promised to destroy all of those people who will not conform to the correct doctrines and dogma as prescribed by the Church. That’s rather dramatic but is that what is in store for all heretics and other non-conformists?
well, lets talk about what Jesus said. when going into that town… if they reject you, dust even the… then He said, there will be more mercy to the cities of gomorra and…than to the town. so it is worse now than back then. now, is protestants and those who leave the Church any better than those of that town who reject the Apostles? are protestants and ex Catholics to receive special treatment from God when they come against the Church? is there any exception found in teh Bible for anyone who reject the Church? and smear her around the world?

I’m sorry you are going through such a rough time. I too live in the bible belt where Catholics are treated as devils almost. Some better, some worse. There is a college here that calls themselves a “Christian” college but refuses to hire Catholics to teach or attend as students and no one has a problem with that. Granted they are privately funded so technically it is ok since they can do whatever they want.

It is frustrating how these “whoppers” keep getting spread by ignorance and refusal to even look at the Church for explanations of the Truth. Some people don’t want to hear anything contrary to what they believe b/c they are afraid. I used to be ignorant and by the grace of God I’m not AS ignorant any more 😛 I just wish I could convince everyone else in my family of the same thing.

When I converted to Catholicism I made my grandmother cry and other relatives yelled at me and told me I was leaving Jesus behind.

I also was told by my former pastor when I called to request a copy of my baptismal certificate that I wasn’t a Christian anymore and he tried to lecture me on coming back to the true church of being a Baptist.

sigh

Did you ask him when the Catholic Church changed the name to baptist church?

Freemasonry teaches of a bodily resurrection apart from Christ.

That’s anti-Christian, which is why many Protestants condemn Freemasonry.

Isn’t it reasonable to assume that most people with strong opinions about religion are sincere in what they understand to be right? There are many differences of opinion as to how one should live a spiritual life.

I admire the courage and dedication that Mormons, Jehovah Witnesses, and Evangelicals show when they go about their proselytizing. I believe that they believe that they are doing the Lord’s work when they try to warn me of the errors in the Catholic Church.

The us vs. them mentality in much of religion is unfortunate and yet for so many this is a big part what their spirituality consists of.

I’m with you on that - I’d rather see a sincerely convinced Evangelical who thinks I’m going to Hell than a lukewarm liberal who thinks everybody gets to go to Heaven no matter what, and that nothing, ultimately, really matters one way or another.

But the person who told the original lie that is making the Evangelical sincerely think that I’m going to Hell - that person will have a few things to explain to Jesus, on the Judgement Day. And my respect for the Evangelical is actually the reason that I would take the time to engage him in a debate or a discussion, to try to convince him of the truth of the Catholic faith.

Hi, Cosmian,

Actually, it isn’t reasonable - it is just an assumption that needs to be tested.

There certainly are a lot of opinions - Cosmian, but we are not talking about all the ways one can drive from NYC to LA. Even if you go via Bangor, Maine - you will still wind up in LA if that is what you want to do. The issue really is what did Christ say to do? And, if we know that - than, we also know what He said about those who fail to follow Him through their own will. If you have any doubts, check out the 25th Chapter of Matthew (here is a link: usccb.org/nab/bible/matthew/matthew25.htm).

Now, I am not really sure what ‘Cultural Catholic’ means - but, if you are admiring the ‘…courage and dedication that Mormons, Jehova Witnesses and Evangelicals show…’ just what is it you are showing at this time? The first two don’t even believe Christ is God - and the Evangelicals have this fixation on “Faith Alone” which appears only once in the Bible (James) to condemn the concept and “Scripture Alone” which doesn’t even appear in the Bible. Maybe it would be a good time to see what kind of positive role model you can be to others.

God bless

I forgot about this one from years ago…I was a child and we were watching something on TV about Rose Kennedy (mother of John F. Kennedy, and his many brothers – for you young’uns). My mother said, “you know she goes to Church every day – too bad she doesn’t understand that won’t get her to heaven.”:eek:

So, again, in some way I have my anti-Catholic mother to thank for leading me to the Catholic Church because i remember thinking how nice it was for someone to go and worship every day. At the time of course i didn’t know she was receiving our Lord, body and blood, soul and divinity every day. Oh, how that must have comforted Rose after the two assasinations of her sons and her worry over her remaining children and grandchildren.

I thought my mother (though well intentioned) was wrong about Rose Kennedy and made me see maybe there was other things the protestants were wrong about the Catholic Church also…

Right now, I just have to thank God for bringing me home to his Church. To be INSIDE the loving arms of Mother Church, instead of out in the world being blown by every protestant doctrine…to and fro…is priceless. Praise God for His one, holy, Catholilc and apostolic church.!

So you are saying that Jesus has come to destroy all those who reject Him. That’s something to look forward to isn’t it? There won’t be too many people left when God is finished with them.

Only one is necessary, and she is already in Heaven. 🙂

Just the other day i had came home early from school and found that the satilite company i have is featuring a 24 hr Jimmy Swaggart channel. I just happened to turn to an episode of Frances and Friends which i really shouldnt have and i hear them talking about the terrible Catholic-Islam agenda. They actually believe that Catholicism and Islam are similar religions and that the Catholic Church conspires with The Islamic religion to take over the world and then once that happens Catholics will be destroyed because the Catholic Church’s influence is weak and is getting weaker because Europe is being overrun with Muslims. Oh yea also they also do not recognize The Catholic Church as being a Christian religion. Its sad for people have to come up with these whoppers. I almost wanted to call in aNd say since Catholics arent Christian then u should take out the whole New Testament because it is not Christian and they are leading their Christians astray with Catholic approved material.

I would have to say that my favorite is that Constantine forced the bishops accept the Trinity Doctrine at Nicea I heard that from my JW mother in law, oh and also that we practice cannibalism, I heard that from a Calvary neighbor.

Amazing how the readers of the Bible come up with all the different interpretations. Thank God the church has the magisterium. One man wrote the Koran…

Perhaps the craziest of all is, “The Church is full of hypocrites!”

Because it isn’t. We can always scoot together and make room for one more.😃

The Church isn’t a hotel for saints, it’s a hospital for sinners. Who among us here on Earth who say we believe and practice what our Faith teaches are actually perfect 100% of the time?
