What's the difference between Mormons and Jehovah's witnesses?

JW’s say very mistakenly Jesus Christ is actually Michael the Archangel.

Where do scriptures say:

We all will be judged by an angel
An angel is the Lord, Emmanuel “God with us”
Every knee shall bow down to an angel
An angel has the power to forgive sin
and on and on and on…
Mormons say Adam is Michael

Another distinct teaching of the JW is that Jesus was not crucified, he was executed on a “tourture stake”.

Does anyone know if the NWT excludes any references to the cross? If so, how do they render the phrase “Crucify Him” ?

Well as you stated, they replace the word “cross” with “torture stake” every place that you find it in scripture. They also replace “crucified/crucify” with “impale.” Their leaders can’t change everything though, but they try their best.

John 21:18, "Most assuredly, I say to you, when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you wished; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish.”

History recounts Peter being as being crucified upside down, faithful to the end. Note how he will “stretch out his hands,” evidently referring to his future death on earth. The JW portrayal involves the hands and arms together above the head. I really don’t like to get into this point personally, our Savior died for US, period. But scripture, nonetheless, also provides the way that he laid down his life for us, on the cross.

How about “take up your cross daily and follow me”?

welcome to the confusing, unverifiable world of false prophets
:amen:

TK you are sooooo right. Many are sucked into theological whirlpool of these self styled prophets: shameless self-promotion, lust for power, money and often involves abuse of women especially sexual exploitation, shockingly in the name of God.

My LDS boss of 14 years was telling me the glories of mormonism & as I was standing at the doorway of his office, I literally had a locution - heard a voice very clearly, calmly but explicitly say: “Pepband Mom”, DO YOUR HOMEWORK!" I acted on what that voice said & in doing so kept me from EVER AGAIN thinking twice about converting out of the Roman Catholic faith to especially some American, man-made group

I found this interesting synopsis of the differences between the 2 groups.

Jehovah’s Witnesses believe ONLY the Bible to be God’s inspired word (1 Tim 3: 16).
Mormons believe “The Book of Mormon” is God’s inspired Word.

Mormons believe that God still calls prophets & apostles to guide his people.
Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, was the last Prophet.

Mormons believe that Jesus is Jehovah of the Old Testament
Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that Jehovah is the name of Almighty God, the father of Jesus Christ

Mormons refer to God as Elohim.
Jehovah’s Witnesses call him by his personal name, Jehovah. (Psalms 83:18)

Mormons believe “that Zion (New Jerusalem) will be built on the American continent.”
Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that New Jerusalem is a government in heaven.

Mormon missionaries preach for a set period of time, usually 2 years.
All of Jehovah’s Witnesses (male & female, young & old) preach the gospel for their entire lives.

Mormons believe in the literal gathering of Israel and in the restoration of the Ten Tribes.
Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that because of their rejection of Christ, the nation of Israel permanently lost its privileged position as God’s special people. Thus the nation of natural Jews no longer figure as a people in Bible prophecy, but God’s anointed ones (from all nations) are designated as “spiritual” Israelites.

Mormons believe “that Christ will reign personally upon the earth.”
Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that Christ will rule from heaven as a spirit.

Jehovah’s Witnesses believe (Romans 5:12) that death is the result of Adamic (from Adam) sin;
Mormons do not believe in Adamic sin, but that God told them to eat from the forbidden tree (sin) so that they can have children and fill the earth.

Mormons believe there are multiple ‘levels’ of heaven in the afterlife.
Jehovah’s Witnesses believe in the resurrection of the dead (John 5:28,29; Acts 24:15), the majority living on the earth forever, but a select few (144,000) ruling in heaven with Christ. (Psalm 37:9-11, 29; Matthew 5:5, Revelation 5:10; 20:4.)

Mormons believe that our spirits were created long before our bodies.
Jehovah’s Witnesses believe our existence begins at conception.

Mormons believe that all Christians receive the gifts of the holy spirit through “the laying on of hands” (gift of tongues, prophecy, revelation, visions, healing, interpretation of tongues).
Jehovah’s Witnesses believe this was a first century arrangement limited to the period of the apostles and that these miraculous “gifts” have now ceased. (1 Corinthians 13: 8, 9.)

Mormons use the King James Version Bible, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine & Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price as scripture.
Jehovah’s Witnesses use many different Bible translations but The New World Translation is most commonly used at their worship services.

Mormons believe that Jesus Christ was crucified on a cross.
Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that Jesus died on an upright stake.

Mormons do not have any restrictions or teachings regarding common medical practices.
Jehovah’s Witnesses abstain from blood and do not accept blood transfusions. (Acts 15:28,29)

Mormons are encouraged to be active in politics, military, and one’s government to support and defend liberty and democracy, and that these supersede scriptural commandments.
Jehovah’s Witnesses follow Jesus’ and the first century Christians’ examples and do not participate in their country’s military or political affairs. They believe that God does not back any one country above all others.(Acts 10:34,35)

Mormons celebrate most Christian and national holidays as well as birthdays, anniversaries, and other special occasions.
Jehovah’s Witnesses do not celebrate Christmas, birthdays nor many political and secular holidays.

Mormons count their total membership number as all those enrolled and tithing in their church, and include all who they have “baptized from the dead.”
Jehovah’s Witnesses count their total membership number only as those who are regular and active in the preaching work today.

Mormons hold Sunday worship services in meeting houses, while additional (optional) worship services are held throughout the week in temples.
Jehovah’s Witnesses worship in “Kingdom Halls” at least twice a week.

Mormons require their members to tithe one tenth of their income to the church.
Jehovah’s Witnesses do not tithe or take up collections; all contributions are anonymous and voluntary, and all of their Kingdom Halls are built and maintained by unpaid volunteers.

Mormons’ standard worship service is similar in format to most Protestant churches, with hymns, prayers, the Sacrament (‘Communion’ or the ‘Lord’s Supper’), and a couple of short sermons.
Jehovah’s Witnesses’ standard worship services include prayers, singing, and study directly out of the Bible, sometimes using other theocratic books as study aids.

Both Jehovah’s Witnesses and Mormons claim their organizations reflect the “Primitive Church” (follow the first century Christian model).

Both churches seek to spread their word abroad and are known for going door-to-door to do so. They intent is not to convert or baptize every person they speak to, but to give everyone an opportunity to hear the Kingdom message. (Matthew 28:19,20)

That sounds like it is taken straight from a brochure from the jws. Very misleading as is all of their literature. They do not worship at their meetings, but rehearse for field service. They do not use other bible translations, but say they do. I would love to see a jw out in service with the jerusalem bible or the douay Rheims. They also teach that self defense even to the point of killing is acceptable, but not war.

And they also are very political even though they do not vote. They have their own lawyers that are daily in political battles over various things from religious freedoms to defending their headquarters from allegations that individuals bring on the religion from rape to mental abuse.

not only that, they do not believe in the whole Bible…several verses are missing…

🤷 I didn’t know giving to your parish using an envelope was an earth shattering event.
Ha, I was just joking because Jack Chick has stated something like the Vatican has a database of all non-Catholics so in the end times, the Pope can send the Jesuits out for some inquisition like activities.

catoblue

JWs don’t believe Jesus is God/Son of God. They believe he is Michael the Archangel. And they are extremely anti Catholic. They are also against all holidays e.g. 4th of July. They do not like anything patriotic (including the national anthem - the woman who babysat me when I was in Kindergarten is still a JW…my mom saw her at a free local municipal band concert at a park a few years ago - she did NOT stand for the National Anthem). They believe that blood transfusions is EATING BLOOD…so basically if they had a premature baby that needed a blood transfusion to survive…that baby would die because they would refuse the transfusion. They also believe that celebrating birthdays is wrong because of two beheadings in the bible that** just HAPPENED** to fall on a BIRTHDAY. )

Both groups are cults started by mere MORTALS that did not rise from the dead.

Oh, that database. 😉

One quick question here, probably more in regard of the JWs than the Mormons:
*why do they use a man-made name for God? Is it disrespectful to God to change his name?
I refer here to the term Jehovah. As we know that it is a man-made version of the ancient Tetragrammaton, which I always understood would properly be called Yahweh, as in YHWH, which being written originally in hebrew, woukd have been written down without vowels. Correct me if I’m wrong on this.

God bless

On a different note, I recently had an experience with the door knocking witnesses.
Now I wasn’t trying to be rude, nor offensive, nor disrespectful, and I’m not one of those who would slam the door on them, but I was getting ready to go to work and didn have time to get into a debate, nor to be saved.
I’d seen these two ladies walking up my driveway, while another pair of young men walked up my next-door neighbours drive, so I rightly guessed that it was either LDS or JW people coming.
As I opened the front door to these 2 ladies just as they were about to knock, I noticed that one of the two was holding a magazine that said Watchtower.
Before they started to speak, I asked if they had come to meet me because they wanted someone to go to mass with, and to introduce them to a priest so they could join Christ’s only true church, and hear the true word of god, as taught by the only church which Christ had founded. I went on to mention that I was in a rush to go to work but would be going to mass that evening, if they wanted to call back about 6pm.
Both of them looked shocked and one didn’t speak, while the other lady politely said “I don’t really think that’s for us thanks” and before I could say anything else, they were halfway up my drive. Seriously I’ve never seen two elderly ladies move so quick!
Which leads me onto the question:
Why did they look shocked, and why did they scarper so quickly? Is this because they have some negative image of Catholics?

I suppose it could have been worse, 😃 I could have got my housemate to answer the door, as he was wearing a t-shirt that day, which shows off his eye-of-horus-wrapped-in-compass-&-square tattoo. I can picture it now, “hi ladies, I’m a humble representative of lucifer, come -in, would you care for a cup of tea?” (off topic but he denies that the Masonic deity is really lucifer, but having seen that tattoo, I just don’t believe him. If that’s not the eye of horus, then I’m a monkey’s uncle.)

Hi Jharek mind if I ask (if you know) what they view negatively about us? Is it one of them “they worship a pope who is really the anti-Christ” type things, or just that we’ve corrupted Christ’s message or one of them jack chick type “Catholics are cannibals who drink blood at mass” lies? Or other?

Thanks

God bless

Paul

Why the “man-made name”? Because it becomes popular among English speakers, I don’t know actually. Is it disrespectful to change his name? Yes. Is “Yahweh” correct? I honestly don’t know if anyone knows the correct pronunciation of YHWH, and we ought not try to say it because that is GOD’S NAME. All we can know is that it is spelled Y-H-W-H.
