What’s the worst thing about Christmas ?

Meeting family members ?

You end up doing all the cooking ?

You always get someone’s name wrong ?

You always forget something?

I love Christmas and there is NOTHING bad about it at all.

I do wish I could get more rest and time off around Christmas. America never stops and enjoys anything!!

the expense.
Yep. Here’s a video on the subject of Christmas expenses.

And the stress–a lot of stuff needs to happen by Christmas Eve. And it really has to be by Christmas Eve–you have to have a decorated tree and wrapped presents by Christmas Eve, at the very minimum.

Fortunately, by that point things are on auto pilot, more or less, so Christmas Day is no big deal.

I also am not crazy about the work involved in doing Christmas letters, but it is important for us non-Facebookers to stay in touch.

Didn’t St. Boniface approve of the giving of gifts under a christmas tree? I mean, yeah: companies cash in by saying ‘hey you can give your loved one what he or she wants for Christmas!’ of course… video games, gosh, I like to play them, but i feel kind of left out. Personally, I’d rather be playing a strategy tabletop game, read some books, get notebooks and pencils, and maybe some favorite tv shows. But that’s about it. Nothing more, nothing less… except for forgiveness, reconciliation with God, getting a clear head, not wanting to condemn people instantly as heretics or something evil… and of course; having a better spiritual life without losing my freaking mind. I personally don’t want to be a babbling conspiracy theorist thinking everyone’s out to get me.
The worst thing for Christmas is; a bunch.
Rampant unregulated commercialism
ungrateful kids (who should get the spoon)
Bad endings for great relationships
Broken hearts
broken families

Shopping. I hate to shop, especially when I have no idea what to get someone.

People who won’t say what they want when asked.

I’m going to start threatening the ones on my Christmas list with getting socks and underwear for Christmas if they don’t offer suggestions.

Is this poll for real? It seems on the surface to be an exercise in ingratitude. Why would we want to gather to discuss all the things we like the least about one of the two great feast days of the Church year? 🤷

The whole year has the same neurotic and difficult friends and relatives to love, the same economy running on selling people as much as possible whether they need it or want it or not, relationship break-ups, acquaintances who like all the least interesting forms of recreational amusement, and all the rest.

Why project all these trials of our vale of tears particularly onto Christmas? Again, I don’t get it. 🤷

My bad, I’m sometimes a theological and/or philosophical idiot.

Dear one, I did not want to put you down or to have you put yourself down! My question is why you associate these evils of our times particularly with the Solemnity of the Nativity?

  1. All about presents, not enough about Jesus.
  2. It’s invasion into Thanksgiving on the material end of things. Every day should be a day to be thankful to God. :yup:
  3. I like visiting with/seeing people, but I don’t like it when it’s a hassle to get to Daily Mass.

The worst thing about Christmas is that many years I’ve spent it alone, making it one of the most difficult times of the entire year.

Many people are with family and friends, and if one doesn’t have family or friends, it’s easy to see people around who all look happy. Then, one goes home, all alone.

Everything shuts down, work and everything, and it gets boring. It doesn’t lift till into January.

In the north, the darkness and cold doesn’t help. It’s depressing.

Time can move VERY slowly, as if it were in slow motion, where a short time feels like an absolute eternity. I can want things to get back to normal.

I can wish we could simply fast-forward over the holidays, Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years.

Getting Jesus out of the way after tossing him a miserable song or two. this is why we will be spending it with people who maintain the focus only on him.

Sometimes, I’ve actually gone on an antidepressant, just to get me through the holidays.

I can feel excluded from the festivities and fun.

I’m in Mexico, and generally, because I’m here, far away, almost my entire huge family, will forget me.

At least the light situation is better in Mexico, in that it doesn’t get so dark or cold, is actually quite warm and bright. So, it’s better here in that sense.

I finally just made some friends after all this time, but for many folks, the holidays are really rough. The holidays are rough on people with depression, say.

In fact, seems to me I’ve seen announcements about this time of the year in previous years focusing on people with depression, telling them not to isolate themselves at this time.

Well, the holidays can make depression much more acute, due to the combination of the lack of light (like with Seasonal Affective Disorder) and lack of social contact…for no few number of people.

It’s like that song that says, “…all the lonely people, where do they all come from?”

With all the lonely people about, it’s a crying shame they couldn’t get together with the other lonely people.

Outside the depression, the stress of it all, one goes into a store, and it can be positively mobbed, making even the simplest of things, virtually impossible!

I tried to go to church the other day at the Cathedral, and it was really hard. I went to an 8 pm mass, and it was packed to overflowing. I had to scramble, last minute, to try to find another available mass.

The only one I could find started at 9 pm, and by 10 pm, I was REALLY tired!

Also, here, it is so packed around the day of the Virgin of Guadalupe that I can’t get by in my wheelchair. There’s no space for me. Getting a short distance can take, probably better part of an hour.

I basically can’t even fit in the Cathedral at this time of the year, have to go to a different church, due to the wheelchair and the overcrowding.

People go to church during Christmas who don’t go the rest of the year, and it packs out to overflowing, to a point, there’s just no space for me in different places. I actually MUST look elsewhere.

The sidewalks also pack out to a point I can almost not be able to get by, hook into things with my wheelchair, where I could potentially break things for sale, and later need to pay for whatever I’d accidentally break.

My niece, who is also in a wheelchair, said that one year, she hooked some display, taking it down, and ever since, she has shopped online for Christmas!
