HagiaSophia:
I can’t remember such a blatant media blitz by a group seking to obtain by hype what they failed to achieve in an election.
Me neither. The media is frantic that their one sentence account of this issue–Rove illegally disclosed the identity of a CIA undercover agent–is believed.

“Pinch” Sulzberger is on the ropes and he and his friends know it. He called for the special prosecutor. Demanded everyone testify. And now his reporter refuses to talk. Sulzberger also ran Joe Wilson’s false Op-Ed piece on Saddam, uranium ore and Niger.

See Powerline today?
In all of the liberal huffing and puffing over the supposed “outing” of Valerie Plame–as though she might be in danger as she drove to and from her desk job in Langley, and as though she hadn’t posed for a photo shoot in Vanity Fair, dressed up as a spy–I’ve seen no liberal criticism of a more recent, real outing of a clandestine CIA operation.
In this case, those who outed a CIA operation exposed secret agents operating in the field, in circumstances of great personal danger, not a civilian desk employee. The outing of the CIA operation undoubtedly forced the CIA to terminate or change what had been an effective means of protecting the nation’s security, and likely did endanger the lives of real covert agents.
I’m referring, of course, to the exposure of a purportedly civilian airline as a CIA operation:
*While posing as a private charter outfit - “aircraft rental with pilot” is the listing in Dun and Bradstreet - Aero Contractors is in fact a major domestic hub of the Central Intelligence Agency’s secret air service. The company was founded in 1979 by a legendary C.I.A. officer and chief pilot for Air America, the agency’s Vietnam-era air company, and it appears to be controlled by the agency, according to former employees.
An analysis of thousands of flight records, aircraft registrations and corporate documents, as well as interviews with former C.I.A. officers and pilots, show that the agency owns at least 26 planes, 10 of them purchased since 2001. The agency has concealed its ownership behind a web of seven shell corporations that appear to have no employees and no function apart from owning the aircraft.
The planes, regularly supplemented by private charters, are operated by real companies controlled by or tied to the agency, including Aero Contractors and two Florida companies, Pegasus Technologies and Tepper Aviation.*
Who was it who “outed” these CIA employees, blew their cover and perhaps endangered their lives?
The New York Times, of course!
In an article that was based largely on leaks by former CIA employees, who were out to embarrass the administration.
Ah, but that’s the “good” kind of leak–the kind that exposes the Agency’s real covert operatives, not the kind that tries to correct lies told by Democratic Party loyalists in the pages of the New York Times.

Naming the wife isn’t the offense…
outing the wife as being a CIA operative is .
Bolding mine - you can read the entire article here:

At the threshold, the agent must truly be covert
. Her status as undercover must be classified, and she must have been assigned to duty outside the United States currently or in the past five years. This requirement does not mean jetting to Berlin or Taipei for a week’s work. It means permanent assignment in a foreign country. Since Plame had been living in Washington for some time when the July 2003 column was published, and was working at a desk job in Langley (a no-no for a person with a need for cover), there is a serious legal question as to whether she qualifies as “covert.”

The law also requires that the disclosure be made intentionally, with the knowledge that the government is taking “affirmative measures to conceal [the agent’s] relationship” to the United States. Merely knowing that Plame works for the CIA does not provide the knowledge that the government is keeping her relationship secret. In fact, just the opposite is the case. If it were known on the Washington cocktail circuit, as has been alleged, that Wilson’s wife is with the agency, a possessor of that gossip would have no reason to believe that information is classified – or that “affirmative measures” were being taken to protect her cover.

There are ways of perceiving whether the government was actually taking the required necessary affirmative measures to conceal its relationship with Plame. We can look, for example, at how the CIA reacted when Novak informed the press office that he was going to publish her name. Did the general counsel call to threaten prosecution, as we know has been done to other reporters under similar circumstances? No. Did then-Director George Tenet or his deputy pick up the phone to tell Novak that the publication of her name would threaten national security and her safety, as we know is done when the CIA is serious about prohibiting publication? No. Did some high-ranking government official ask to visit Novak or the president of his newspaper syndicate to talk him out of publishing – another common strategy to prevent a story?** No.**

I’d rather leave it up to the Grand Jury to decide who gets prosecuted for what - because it’s looking more and more like this whole thing was a “Get Bush” set-up from the very start - namely, Joe Wilson’s fake “report on uranium.”

There may not be anyone to prosecute for this thing, except perhaps Joe Wilson, himself! He may well end up with libel and perjury charges before this is done.
Rove and anyone else involved need to be put on trial so that the evidence can be presented and those guilty charged, while those not-guilty are cleared of any wrongdoing.
Rove on trial for what? Again, I think we have to leave it in the hands of the GJ, for now.

Rove gave Cooper his permission long ago to tell the Grand Jury exactly the conversations that had transpired between Cooper and him. That doesn’t sound like a man who has been involved in anything criminal. But it sure does sound like Cooper has a new credibility problem. (And therefore, possible charges of perjury for him, too. And yes, I would smirk at that, uncharitable as it might be. They’ve made their own bed.)

Ann Coulter’s nailed it, in her inimitable way:
"Karl Rove was right. The real story about Joseph C. Wilson IV was not that Bush lied about Saddam seeking uranium in Africa; the story was Clown Wilson and his paper-pusher wife, Valerie Plame. By foisting their fantasies of themselves on the country, these two have instigated a massive criminal investigation, the result of which is: The only person who has demonstrably lied and possibly broken the law is Joseph Wilson
.

So the obvious solution is to fire Karl Rove." (snip)
Wilson intentionally blew his wife’s “cover” in order to lie about how he ended up going to Niger. Far from a serious fact-finding mission, it was a “Take Your Daughters to Work Day” gone bad. Maybe liberals shouldn’t have been so insistent about that special prosecutor. :rotfl:

Woodward and Bernstein were on tonight and even they can’t find “any crime” – everyone knows what this story is really about…and it isn’t about a “crime” that Rove committed.

Democrat leaders and editorialists accusing Karl Rove of treason for referring to CIA agent Valerie Plame in an off-the-record interview are ignorant of the law, according to the Washington attorney who spearheaded the legislation at the center of the controversy.

Plame’s circumstances don’t meet several of the criteria spelled out in a 1982 statute designed not only to protect the identity of intelligence agents but to maintain the media’s ability to hold government accountable, Victoria Toensing told WorldNetDaily.

Toensing – who drafted the legislation in her role as chief counsel for the chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence – says the Beltway frenzy surrounding Plame’s alleged “outing” as a covert agent is a story arising out of the capital’s “silly season.”

Oh great. So we’re in for how many years of this hysteria, then? 😉

When is it NOT silly season in Washington, DC?

New York Times has a history of using the “permanent government” (the liberals who run the Federal bureaucracy) to under mine U.S. foreign policy.

In the 1956-57 Time’s reporter Herbert Matthew worked with liberals at State to arraign in interview with Fidel Castro. Bastista and our government could not find Castro’s hide out. The U.S. Ambassador to Cuba and those in the Eisenhower administration running foreign policy had no idea what was going on. Matthew’s wrote a puff piece on Castro. Grossly distorted the number of his rebel troops, said Castro was a “democrat” who wanted "free elections, was not a communist and was not an enemy of the USA. In several front page articles, Matthews stressed that the youth of Cuba saw Castro as the hope of the future.

Got a similar circumstance today. The New York times is working with liberals at the CIA and State to undermine US foreign policy.

Rove can take care of himself. He is a big boy and knows right from wrong. If he did wrong, he will find out he is not above the law.

Political power is a two edged sword.
Good post gilliam, I agree! There’s no smoke without fire, but if there is nothing to worry about, Rove can look after himself.

Personally, and from experience, I would say there’s no smoke without fire though and something is going on here that is not strictly kosher…If you know what I mean!

Whats going on here is simply the “politics of personal destruction”. The Dems are targeting the person who ran Bush’s presidential campaign. They hate him…pure and simple. Now Joe Wilson is scheduled for press conference today with none other than Dem Senator Chuck Schumer, to ask that Rove’s security clearance be suspended until after the investigation is over.

Fat, the only fire is the one still fuming at the DNC because they lost the election.
