Now there’s a great one! The Marines’ Hymn manages to make periodic appearances in pop culture, sometimes when least expected:

–Bugs Bunny is being beaten up in a WWII-vintage Looney Toones cartoon when he changes into a Marine uniform; the hymn plays; he marches off past a sign showing the way to Tokyo and Berlin; the bad guys stop and salute as a real hero goes past;

–Apollo Creed rides into the boxing ring in the original 1976 Rocky, dressed as George Washington crossing the Delaware, as the Marines Hymn plays. Sorry, when I watched this as a kid I rooted for Apollo because of this scene.

This is the best thread in the last year.

My favorite patriotic song is “Johnny, I hardly knew ya,” an antiwar song sung to the tune of “When Johnny Comes Marching Home,” and preferably performed by Joan Baez.

The Star Spangled Banner - the drawback is that the melody is particularly hard to sing. But if you ever get to the fourth verse, you’ll see that it appeals for us to put our trust in God.
OOPS, so sorry-- the youtube that I cited at the end of this post ends abruptuly! Please you tube it and find a complete version. Apologies! It’s worth hearing!

I like the Star Spangled Banner, and I agree that it’s hard to sing–for ONE person!

BUT…when EVERYONE sings together, it works. The altos and basses get to sing out strong during the open phrases when the melody drops low, and then the sopranos and tenors can take over when the melody climbs into the stratosphere! Even the trebles can join in throughout the anthem!

It’s such a wonderful analogy of the United States of America, where EVERYONE has to join in to make our country work and be a great place to live!

I am proud to say that when my daughter and her synchronized skating team won the Gold Medal at an international competition in France years ago, she and her teammates belted out the Star Spangled Banner with all their hearts!! My daughter told us that as they saw that flag going up, they didn’t just see a colorful piece of cloth–they saw the entire UNITED STATES OF AMERICA that they had represented!

I really loved the Lady Gaga rendition of the Star Spangled Banner at the SuperBowl a few years ago. It was after surprising and delighting all Americans with her reverent and beautiful singing of the Anthem that Lady Gaga started singing the “old songs” with the legendary Tony Bennett. I never liked her “meat dress” years and I certainly don’t agree with many of her political views, but I truly admire her singing now, and her savvy in giving us a respectful National Anthem performance that truly honored our flag and our country.

Here’s a wonderful performance ot the Star Spangled Banner by Sandy Patti–years ago, when the Statue of Liberty was re-dedicated. This performance made her a public celeb back then:

Maybe some will remember a big hit of the late 1960s, The Green Beret Song:

I have also always loved the Ballad of the Alamo, sung by the incomparable Marty Robbins:

My favorite Patriotic song is “America the Beautiful” sung by Ray Charles…I get goose bumps every time I hear it…I also get a sense of Pride when I look out my back door and see “Ole Glory” waving in the breeze on my little building out back…Her appearance is noticeable to all driving my on the road… 🇺🇸…and here is a picture of her…(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

As a student of Civil War era history, I’ve always been fascinated by the strange figure of John Brown, who believed he was acting in the name of God in trying to free slaves but who did so with a sword. Anyway, the lyrics, “John Brown’s body lies a-moulderin’ in the grave but his soul goes marchin’ on,” are certainly memorable! Here’s Pete Seeger’s version:

“Song of the Patriot” and “Ragged Old Flg” by Johnny Cash. As for traditional songs, definitely Yankee Doodle and Stars and Striped Forever

The Battle Cry of Freedom

FROM WORLD WAR I

"Over There"

by George M. Cohan, 1917

Also from World War I

"It’s A Long Way To Tipperary" and "Pack Up Your Troubles In Your Old Kit Bag."

Battle Hymn of the Republic

Lyrics by Julia Ward Howe

596,670 Union soldiers were killed, wounded, captured, or missing in the Civil War.

Regardless of skin color, national origin, or religious creed, all American patriots bleed red.

Millions of Americans love their country, and are ready to stand up for her…they have served, are serving, or will join her armed forces when needed.
