Rafflesia arnoldii one of the national flowers in Indonesia, is a parasitic plant. It’s noted for producing the largest flower on earth that can grow over three feet across. The flower is a fleshy color, with spots that make it look like a teenager’s acne-ridden skin. It smells bad, that’s why it is nicknamed as “corpse flower”. It has a hole in the center that holds six or seven quarts of water. The plant has no leaves, stems, or roots.

We have a few of those at our botanical gardens here, and it’s always a major event whenever one of them blooms. The news media shows up, and school kids visit on field trips.

The fully unfurled flower was now showing its deep burgundy interior. It was giving off only a light smelly odour this morning, but its signature rotting flesh smell may intensify as the day progresses and the temperature in the glasshouse rises.

The rare Amorphophallus titanum originates from the rainforests of Sumatra in Indonesia, and has been growing at the council-owned nursery and Wintergarden for about seven years.
