Marigolds 🙂

There is a legend connected to this flower.

When the Holy Family were fleeing to Egypt, they were accosted by bandits who stole Mary’s purse.

When the thieves opened the purse, marigolds fell out instead of coins.

Marigold came to be known as Mary’s gold by early Christians who would put this flower around statues of Mary.

I heard that as a child.

I remember thinking to myself, why would a flower that originated in Mexico be found in Egypt?

By a miracle I suppose.

Oleander. Hardy and attractive, though toxic if consumed.

Very pretty! :smiley:My toddler son ,well I don’t think he could even toddle at that stage(he began walking at 9 months 😮) …grabbed some flowers and popped them in his mouth from over my shoulder as I carried him through a garden .I took him to hospital where he happily and messily ate liquid charcoal ,and was fine thank God.
I have heard of someone burning oleander branches and dying from the smoke 🙁 There were several beautiful flowers I chose to not plant ,having curious children that could be spontaneous.

See how the black mustard weeds (Brassica nigra) have taken over this stretch of ground 😠. These, however, are edible plants, related to cabbage, which I did not know before 🥗

I have no idea. There are people who teach classes about urban foraging here in L.A., how to collect and prepare weeds that are safe to eat, but I’ve never looked into it.

Magnolia blossoms ready to bloom, with musical accompaniment 🙂.

Hmm, haven’t heard that song before…🙃:grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I’ve noticed more planting season of this variety of magnolia in the last few years…there are some small ones flowering …do they keep flowering?
I’ve stuck a few pieces of a different kind of magnolia in the ground…I hope they take 🤔
Similar to this ,but purple.

I was in my teens when I first did a bit of gardening . I was prompted by my grandmother who wanted a few flowers in the garden at the back of the house . So I went down the local clough and dug up a wild rose tree and planted it . It wasn’t long before Mr Rigby , a neighbour who was a great gardener , was up telling my grandmother that I should dig it up because wild roses are not good for the garden . So up it came .

On the Saturday I went down into town and bought a rose tree from Woolworths . It was in a cellophane
bag with a label on it with the name and a photo of the rose . I can’t remember the name , but it went in the garden , stayed there and flourished .

So that was my first bit of gardening , and I would like to be able to say that this photo was what my garden became , but it isn’t , but it’s a beautiful rose garden of some lucky person
, with musical accompaniment of course as a tribute to my grandma .

On the subject of roses, I saw this lovely yellow specimen yesterday, with appropriate musical accompaniment (except that I’m about 1500 miles west of Texas)

Don’t tell me you don’t know if it has a scent…😠
Me and @Sarcelle have to know these things, most important 🧐😁
Sometimes it’s not practical to take a sniff ,or can be downright dangerous leaning over in which case you are excused 🙂

I remember touring a rose garden in Vancouver Canada and I remember having to sniff each and every rose.

Roses must have scent! It’s not all about looks. 😠

Technology had better hurry up so that we can download rose scent someday :angry:And while we still have a sense of smell .

This evening I questioned my white lilac why it was sending out leaf buds in mid Winter…then I noticed the Japonica beside it had some white flower buds…🤔 Our late Autumn Break rains after the hot dry Summer has some plants confused .

Ranunculus has 500 species , one of them being our Meadow Buttercup , Ranunculus acris .

And what a beautiful sight is Magpie Mine near Monyash surrounded by fields of Meadow buttercups in the Peak District , Derbyshire .
