When a pope is canonized

I was just wondering: When a pope is canonized, why does Pope come before Saint in their name (ie Pope St. Pius X)?

Good question! I’m sorry, I don’t know the answer, though.
 
My guess is that it is because the individual is a Saint and being pope was just a title. He is a Saint for his heroic viture, not because he was pope.
 
For the same reason you say Bp. St. Ignatius Brianchaninov, or Patriarch St. Gregory V, or Abbess St. Elizabeth.

The PERSON is glorified as a saint, not the ecclesiastical title.
 
I think the title Saint goes before the name of the person, not his or her title.

Plus, it sounds strange to say “Saint Pope Pius X”.
 
I’ve wondered about that. I presume then it should be Padre Saint Pio. I hang up every time I try to refer to him.

In the case with Padre Pio… Padre isn’t really a title like reverand… or pope… or bishop… but rather what people called him… and officially i think it’s “Saint Pio of Pietrelcina”… so…
 
The term “Saint” should apply directly to their Christian Name.

Note that “Christian name” can apply to either their Baptismal name, or to one assumed in religious life ( hence monastic saints and Popes are referred to by their religious names, not necessarily their Baptismal names)
