Again, what do people hope to gain. If someone has access to the Holy Father and have an issue with something he did, by all means, use your avenue to let him know. What I want to know is what we can hope to gain by posting something that most perceive as a mistake for 20 YEARS and that were committed by a pope that has already died!!! Think about how this looks to those who are weak in the Faith and who are not even in the Faith.
Agree.

1 Peter 3

"9 Do not return evil for evil, or insult for insult; but, on the contrary, a blessing, because to this you were called, that you might inherit a blessing. 10 For: “Whoever would love life and see good days must keep the tongue from evil and the lips from speaking deceit, 11 must turn from evil and do good, seek peace and follow after it.”

Hope you meditated on that. You’re one who returned an insult (well, sereral, and continue to do so) for honest observation.

Sometimes --someone will quote scripture to try and make a pt. To bad it actually seems — that the scripture has flown right over their own head.

The more one posts the scripture—the more it becomes evident–the scripture is flying right over–without making a stop.

"Psalm 34:

14 Keep your tongue from evil, your lips from speaking lies. 15 Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it. 16 The LORD has eyes for the just and ears for their cry. 17 The LORD’S face is against evildoers to wipe out their memory from the earth. 18 When the just cry out, the LORD hears and rescues them from all distress. 19 The LORD is close to the brokenhearted, saves those whose spirit is crushed. 20 Many are the troubles of the just, but the LORD delivers from them all."

Anyone can use scripture—to try and manipulate others into submission. Some were successful — Arias comes to mind— Luther too.

"Psalm 34

2 I will bless the LORD at all times; praise shall be always in my mouth. 3 My soul will glory in the LORD that the poor may hear and be glad. 4 Magnify the LORD with me; let us exalt his name together. 5 I sought the LORD, who answered me, delivered me from all my fears. 6 Look to God that you may be radiant with joy and your faces may not blush for shame. 7 In my misfortune I called, the LORD heard and saved me from all distress. 8 The angel of the LORD, who encamps with them, delivers all who fear God. 9 Learn to savor how good the LORD is; happy are those who take refuge in him. 10 Fear the LORD, you holy ones; nothing is lacking to those who fear him.

Now a days–the fear of the Lord it seems–is going by the wayside. This may give light— to what at one time would have been improper deed–to now it being explained away — and condoned. Now—what has been turned around–is that some view it as wrong ----when another speaks up and expresses concern ---- about what is improper.

St. Matthew 23:
Then Jesus spoke to the multitues and to his disciples, saying: The scribes and the Pharisees have sitten on the chair of Moses. All things therefore whatsoever they shall say to you, observe and do: but according to their works do ye not. For they say, and do not." Not every example of our superiors are to be followed because it’s not in obedience to God.

St. John 18:
*Again *therefore *Peter *denied: and immediately the cock crew.

[Jesus said] “For this was I born, and for this came I into the world; that I should give testimony to the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.”

WalkingHome, we can’t change some minds; all we can do now is pray that the Holy Ghost bestow the virtues of truth and humility to those who don’t realize that the Pope, like St. Peter, can make mistakes, and that his every example isn’t to be followed. To recognize who God is and who is not God. Jesus Christ Himself remained silent when speaking would fall on deaf and stubborn ears. We seem to be in the same boat. Pray for me please, I’ll pray for you, and we’ll pray for those who try to make us out to be enemies of the Church even while we defend Her. God Bless.

Lord, have mercy on the souls of all our popes. Holy Mother of God, pray for them. Pray for us all.

I will join you in prayer. May Lord, His Most Holy Mother, and all the Saints —here our plea.

Yes, you and WH seem to be in the same boat: you don’t seem to be able to read what is plainly in front of your faces. No one has said that the Pope CAN’T make mistakes or that his example must always be followed. It has never been a question of not knowing who is and who is not God. That bit was very dramatic and downright SILLY.

As can others invoking Our Lord, His Most Holy Mother, and all the Saints.

Quote: My question is this: How do we as Catholics who clearly see ourselves as “more Catholic than the pope” respond to mistakes a pope might make (any pope, not just JPII)?
Do we commit the sin of detraction by exposing another’s “fault” without good reason, while at the same time scandalizing any Catholic or non-Catholic listener?
Excellent question. First of all, detraction means revealing a secret sin of another person in an improper way. This we must not do.

There are times when the public faults of prelates endanger the faith. In such cases it is certainly lawful for subjects to rebuke their superiors (which St. Paul did in Gal. II).

As a rule however, the advice given in the Dialogue of St. Catherine is best. Let us pray for our bishops and priests, and even for their conversion if need be.

Let us show charity and mildness whenever possible.

That’s not the definition of detraction. It has nothing to do with a secret sin.

This is from the CE:
Detraction is the unjust damaging of another’s good name by the revelation of some fault or crime of which that other is really guilty or at any rate is seriously believed to be guilty by the defamer.
