Do you think that it happened before the destruction of Jerusalem? It would have made her 80+, I’m guessing it happened before St. John’s death.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

You can read the Mystical City of God by Ven. Mary of Agreda which is said to be a biography of Mama Mary

From the CE article Feast of the Assumption:

St. John of Damascus (P.G., I, 96) thus formulates the tradition of the Church of Jerusalem:

St. Juvenal, Bishop of Jerusalem, at the Council of Chalcedon (451), made known to the Emperor Marcian and Pulcheria, who wished to possess the body of the Mother of God, that Mary died in the presence of all the Apostles, but that her tomb, when opened, upon the request of St. Thomas, was found empty; wherefrom the Apostles concluded that the body was taken up to heaven.

It is not absolutely clear whether by “all the Apostles” he means all the Apostles then living, or all the Twelve (minus Judas plus Matthias), or some other configuration of Apostles. I think it is reasonable to take the text at face value, which would mean St. James the son of Zebedee was still living.

Herod had St. James killed about 11 years after the Crucifixion of our Lord (cf. Acts 12:1-2), so if we take the above to be accurate, that would mean our Lady did not die any later than 11 years after her Son’s death.

I believe she was 72, read that somewhere…think it was one of the rosary interpretation websites. Look up the Assumption, it should give a detailed description of the events surrounding Mary’s death and Assumption into heaven.

Those of us with Franciscan ties, and who pray the Crown Rosary subscribe to the belief she was 72 years old when she died, also.

Is there an Anno Domini date attached to that?
Not that I am aware of.

But by math, (and only my humble theory) let’s assume the birth of Jesus was between 1 and 4 AD, and Mary between 15 and 18…if Christ’s ministry started when he was 30, lasting 3 years, Mary would have been between 48 and 51, at his time of death which would have bend between 34 and 37 AD…calculate to Mary at age 72 and we are at 58 and 61AD,…so even with some wiggle room it would have been before the destruction of the Temple.

I am struggling toward heaven, and would love to ask her once there. This is intended to be a mystery, as are the hidden years of Jesus’ life, and the words of Saint Joseph. IMO, we are well advised not to fill the blanks in with speculation, but rather to ponder these things in our hearts - as she would want us to.
