Which is exactly what Aquinas and other scholastic theologians did and which Treatises are the basis of today’s received Catholic tradition as being discussed hereThe only scriptural reference to Michael the archangel and his angels battling Satan and his angels is in the book of Revelation. The book of Revelation is an eschatalogical book and as such is prone to many different interpretations.
Many of the early church fathers (post the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD) thought of the book as a future scenario of eschatology revolving around a future anti-christ prior to the return of Jesus Christ and the resurrection of the saints.
Thus, any theories on this battle between angels should be prioritized from an interpretation of the book of Revelation and from the interpretations of the early church fathers regarding this scriptural passage.

Lets remind ourselves we have a freedom that Protestants do not have re Scripture. Catholic tradition can not only affirm truths of faith that are not in Scripture (e.g. the Assumption) but it can also tell us the correct reading/interpretation of Scripture. Often it happens the “obvious” interpretation is plain “wrong” or needs to be harmonised with other truths of faith.
