When Did the Concept of Mass by Age Group Begin?

I thought the post was great. Multiple times, people accused EF goers of being holier than thou for actually trying to be holy!
Its not the trying to be holy, its the assuming everyone else is going to the NO as practicing homosexuals in tank tops and shorts that annoying.

It happens alot more than in the EF parishes

Pride, the father of all sins.
Pride about what? I wish all parishes were like this, reverent. Maybe you dont like chant or latin, fine, but can we at least be reverent? can we agree on the basics and disagree on the technicalties??

Oh I’m fine with Chant and Latin, I have a deep fondness for these things. I’ve spent form age 8 to 20 in an FSSP parish, almost all of that in the choir. I seriously detested the self serving “praise” and worship songs they attempt to pass off as hymn’s at Teen Life like, “Here I am, waiting like a lover”. Give me “O Sacrament Most Holy” Please!

What I don’t like is the idea you have to go to TLM to get that, and if you do you are some how better than the rest of us all because fewer obvious sinners show up there.
Stop judging, that you may not be judged. For as you judge, so will you be judged, and the measure with which you measure will be measured out to you. Why do you notice the splinter in your brother’s eye, but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove that splinter from your eye,’ while the wooden beam is in your eye? You hypocrite,* remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter from your brother’s eye.
I have a brother-in-law who is an FSSP priest, and another who will be ordained a deacon soon. I have many attachments to the Extraordinary Form of the Mass, but the hyper-pious-judgementalism…well, maybe that is what is REALLY to blame for Vatican II.

The only person you can “blame” for Vatican II is the Holy Spirit!👍

There’s a lot more practicing homosexuals in tank tops and shorts?

In rural Ontario?

In Calgary?
NO, and Like I said, I LOVE THE Novus Ordo. I love that Mass, its very active and I thoroughly enjoy serving and particpating in it (minus the drums and electric guitars). However, unfortunatley, (and its not the fault of the NO MASS, but some neo-liberal Priests), there is an influx SOMETIMES. Not all the time, however it does happen. People always run Vatican 2 through the dirt, although some of the wild changes we’ve seen ARENT the true “spirit” of Vatican 2. Vatican 2 NEVER told the Priests to do away with Latin, in fact, perhaps even giving it primacy, Or Communion in the hand Or EMHC WITHOUT a valid reason. Vatican 2 was a good council, however some Bishops in NORTH AMERICA felt the need to tweak some things according to their personal tastes.

Thats exactly what I dont like and what I was trying to get at. I dont think myself more “Pious” because I go to the EF. Im glad to hear that you are “traditionally geared” and happy to hear that your brother in law is an FSSP Priest, I hope his ministry is going well. I also hope that when your other Brother in Law is ordained a Deacon, that his minstry may go well. Again, you dont have to be an FSSP Priest to become a Saint, just teach the Faith orthodoxly, As VATICAN 2 intended it, not as some of the neo-liberal Bishops intended. (Notice I said NEO-LIBERAL, again, not all Bishops are liberal! I love all my Bishops and Priests!)

Okay, I don’t get the whole hatred of the novus ordo or life teen mass, at least from my perspective. At the life teen mass I go to, the only complaint is the music, which is a little too contemporary, but beautiful none the less. It’s a place where kids have reverence and the priest has gone miles to correct this, even stopping the mass if the kids get too crazy during the sign of peace, etc. So I don’t think its the program itself, but the people running it.

Also, I’ve only ever gone to my parishes novus ordo mass. Being in a fairly conservative diocese in the midwest, I’ve never seen any abuses or problems, and I feel my mass is just as valid as the TLM. We don’t sing contemporary hymns or do anything crazy. I wish people would realize that you can have very reverent novus ordo masses.

I agree completley, The Novus Ordo can be unbelivabley beautiful when done with appropriate reverence and respect. I never said the NO isnt valid.:confused:

It probably varies by parish, but I’m accustomed to Life Teen meaning bad music, kids standing around the altar in the sanctuary for the Eucharistic Prayer, skits during the homily, etc. You know, things that are obviously and undeniably illicit.

Well obviously 😉 The term “blame” was more coming form the mindset in the occasional traditionalist that V2 was all wrong and borderline aposticy.

Vatican II gets blamed for many things that it was not reponsible for nor recommended. For instance, Vatican II never said to take out the altar rails. That was done by liberal priests who found an excuse by blaming VII to accomplish the deed.

Oh I know, this diocese got to be a test bed for a ton of that stuff. Fortunately our parish is a historical building so they couldn’t touch it, if they had had their way our high alter and two side alters would be gone.

Like I said before I grew up in a EF parash. It was years after my family started attending before the FSSP took over and it had canonical recognition. I’m pretty well versed in both sides of the story at this point in life 😉

Maybe since we started giving out Sacraments by age group, it gave people this idea.
I don’t think so. The current practice (of delaying Confirmation/Eucharist) has been in place for centuries. The practice of receiving Holy Communion before Confirmation has been in place for approximately 100 years. Hmmmm… as I type this, I begin to think that maybe you’re right and it started in small ways 100 years ago, with homilies geared toward 7 year old first communicants, on their special day. I actually don’t have a problem with occasional homilies geared toward children. We can all still appreciate and learn from them, but I wonder if that sort of thing started a slow decline. From that, to “Children’s Liturgy of the Word” or whatever.

I’m told that some people like the idea of a “family Mass” because they don’t have to worry so much about squirmy children and squealing toddlers, but I think that every Mass should be a family Mass. Parents with squirmy children and squealing toddler should do their best to be respectful of the needs of the entire congregation and older people and those without children should be a little more tolerant and compassionate toward the struggles of those families.

When I was a little girl in the 1950’s our 9:00 a.m. Sunday Mass was the children’s Mass. I think that the sermon was geared to children. I never went to that Mass except when I was older and our sodality attended that Mass as a group. I think that the idea of a children’s Mass goes back a ways, so later when this teen mass business started in the 1980’s no one thought anything of it.
But the Mass was the Mass regardless of whether the congregation was comprised of all adults/a mix of adults and children/all children. If there was a choir, the Mass setting would have been the same for any of those Masses. The sermon might be simplified for children but I don’t recall anything else changing. We were still expected to behave the same way in the pew as at any other Mass.
